Tilda Swinton Wants To Update Mame

8 September 2009 3:12 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When you.ve established a longstanding relationship with an actress like Tilda Swinton, you make sure to keep it going and that.s exactly what Luca Guadagnino plans to do. According to Variety, while promoting their film I Am Love at the Venice Film Festival the duo announced their desire to make a modern version of Auntie Mame. The 1955 novel by Patrick Dennis was adapted for Broadway in 1957 then for film in 1958. There was another cycle of Broadway and cinema reproductions resulting in the 1966 musical Mame starring Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur and subsequent film starring Arthur, Lucille Ball and Robert Preston in 1974. Guadagnino said his version of Auntie Mame would be a "rock-n-roll, super funny, super mainstream movie. and would tell the story of an orphaned boy growing up with his eccentric aunt in the present day. Tilda Swinton In Hip Remake Of 'Auntie Mame' Gets Us Thinking: Five Other Musicals That Should Be Updated

8 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

While promoting their new film "I Am Love" at the Venice Film Festival, actress-producer Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino announced plans to collaborate again on a remake of "Auntie Mame," previously reworked as the musical "Mame," Variety reports. The duo has no legitimate rights to the original novel by Patrick Dennis nor either film version; they're merely using this opportunity to send out an "Sos" to Warner Bros. of their intentions to remake the film with Swinton as the titular eccentric who takes in her orphaned nephew.

While it's unclear if their plan is to make another musical version of the story, Guadagnino does say it will be a "rock-n-roll, super funny, super mainstream movie," implying at least a soundtrack-heavy project. Fans of the original film would certainly be more okay with something supplanting the remake, with its forgettable vocal performance by Lucille Ball -- though Bea Arthur devotees may protest. »

Paramore's Hayley Williams Endorses Miley Cyrus' Fashion Line

2 September 2009 12:07 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Paramore frontvixen Hayley Williams has got a signature style that is tough and edgy but also just girly enough to remind everybody which chromosomes she carries. With a multitude of kids (and Paramore fans) headed back to school this week, Williams dropped some knowledge via her LiveJournal (how 2003 of her!) about her favorite lines and styles. She cited Dogpile as her favorite line (because it was worn by members of AFI and Brody Dalle). That green vest from the "Ignorance" video? That's from Dogpile, according to Williams. She also gives shout-outs to Katy Perry and Lucille Ball as style inspirations and notes that the dress she wore at last year's MTV Video Music Awards came from this boutique. But right at the end, she raises a glass to Miley Cyrus' Wal-Mart line. "Don't forget about Miley's clothing line in Wal-Mart. Dead. Serious," she wrote. "Good quality tees and tanks ... and if you're brave enough, »

Aaron Spelling: God of guilty-pleasure TV

31 August 2009 10:35 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week, EW University takes a look at the people who helped shape the modern TV landscape.  Our first class on TV Auteurs takes a look at the illustrious, often licentious oeuvre of Aaron Spelling. Class is now in session! Yes, kids, the late Aaron Spelling gave television more than the future star of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.  Far, far more, in fact. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Spelling holds the record for the most executive producer credits: 218. That alone, of course, does not an auteur make, but from The Mod Squad to Charlie’s Angels, from Beverly Hills, 90210, to Charmed, a distinct and almost incomprehensibly influential vision emerged. Spelling practically invented the modern TV guilty indulgence, a formula tougher to execute than it looks. When you're watching Burn Notice or Gossip Girl or Desperate Housewives and that "zap" hits the pleasure center of your brain, »

Rivers Romancing Soft-porn Publisher

20 August 2009 6:44 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Comedienne Joan Rivers' love life has taken a funny turn - she has fallen for the man behind the Perfect 10 soft-porn empire.

Norm Zada, 59, admits he has been in love with 76-year-old Rivers for over 30 years after meeting her backstage at a comedy show.

He told her about his lasting crush when he became a subject on her new TV show How Did You Get So Rich - and Rivers was so taken by his loyalty she agreed to date the former mathematics professor-turned-publisher.

What makes the odd romance even odder is Zada made a name for himself by refusing to work with cosmetically-enhanced models - and now he's dating perhaps the world's poster woman for nips and tucks.

Zada reportedly launched Perfect 10 in the mid-1990s after a friend was rejected from the pages of Playboy magazine because her proportions did not fit the magazine's tastes.

But despite his own personal taste for 'real' women, Zada has always found Rivers "intriguing" and "fascinating".

He says, "I was in love with Joan for quite a while back, about 30 years ago... but I had to admire from afar. I got that. She was happily married.

"Then all of sudden they decide to do this show about how I made my money and I had an opportunity to meet her in person - and we got along very well.

"I've always had a lot of respect for her and now we're dating. It's just started and I'm supposed to see her in L.A. when she next comes here. She is a very intriguing lady.

"I would say I have a fascination with her. I've met a lot of natural beautiful models in my time, but I can appreciate women who are incredibly intelligent and are so interesting to be around and learn from, I've always told people that without a high Iq I don't care how attractive the women is, I can't personally get interested in her. Joan is at the very end of the spectrum in terms of Iq."

And Rivers has confirmed she and Zada are an item; her publicist states, "Joan is dating Norm Zada."

Zada, the son of Fuzzy Logic computer scientist Lotfi Zadeh, previously worked at Ibm and was an adjunct mathematics professor at Stanford University, Columbia University and UCLA, where he penned textbooks on computer science.

He turned his back on academia to become a professional poker player before starting up the Perfect 10 empire.

His glossy full of lovelies wrapped up business in 2007, but the enterprising businessman still oversees the spin-off website and remains one of Los Angeles' most powerful players, living among the rich and famous like Denzel Washington, Sylvester Stallone and Rod Stewart in Beverly Park, where Rivers was a recent guest.

And he's already planning a future with the comedienne, who has been single since her beloved husband Edgar Rosenberg died in 1987.

Zada adds, "I would like to go out to lunch with her for the next five years, absolutely, because every meeting would be intriguing.

"I absolutely adore her and just love the Iq and the knowledge and the enlightenment. She's a great dinner companion. We're going to have fun together because I'm going to love talking to her and hopefully she won't hate talking to me."

Rivers isn't Zada's first funny gal - he briefly romanced beloved comedienne Lucille Ball.

Zada reveals, "She used to call me 'The Computer' and I would go visit her at her home on Roxbury in Beverly Hills, and we basically just played backgammon... We were very close.

"But Joan is actually a lot funnier in person than Lucy was... Joan Rivers is in a class by herself." »

Girls on Film: The Wrath of Madeline Kahn

17 August 2009 6:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Many funny women have graced the screen over the years, from Mabel Normand to Lucille Ball to Tina Fey, but one woman's impact was unlike any other -- Madeline Kahn's.

When Star Trek was looming and there was a loud undercurrent of chatter about the previous space-led films, my brain got punny and came up with "The Wrath of Madeline Kahn." At first, I explained away my attachment to the title as part of my love of word play. But soon, I realized it was more than that. Kahn's wrath is a lot of what made her such an indelible comedic figure in Hollywood, one that grabbed two Oscar nominations for her craft.

We always see wrath as this bubbling explosion of anger that hunts down victims near and far. But with Kahn, it was all caught within herself -- wrath (of anger and exuberance) trapped in a human-shaped globe, »

Big Brother 11: Power of Veto #5

(S11E15) On Sunday we saw Lydia and Russell nominated for eviction from the Big Brother 11 house. I'm a bit torn between the two. You see, if Lydia goes, great looks like this one above will be over. She's all but summoning the ghost of a twisted tattooed Lucille Ball. Lydia has intriguing good looks, but she's also a chameleon running the gamut in appearance from Betty Boop to punk rocker. She's not my favorite hamster in the house, but I enjoy seeing what look she'll come up with next. On the other hand, Russell never does much with either his hair or his make-up.Continue reading Big Brother 11: Power of Veto #5

Jacksons file burial papers

Michael Jackson's family have reportedly filed papers to have the star buried at a Hollywood cemetery. Officials at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Los Angeles are now clear to "proceed with burial", over six weeks after the singer died of a suspected cardiac arrest. The decision is likely to anger Michael's brother Jermaine, who has publicly argued for his sibling to be interred in the grounds of his former home Neverland, in Santa Barbara, California. Michael's mother Katherine disagreed, insisting her son never wanted to go back to the property, which he abandoned after his trial for child molestation in 2005. True Blood stars are true to each other

6 August 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Usually I don't write about relationships between cast members of a show (it seems more like gossip than actual television news), but since I'm a fan of True Blood and I found this little twist interesting, here we go. Co-stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are engaged to be married.

What's even more interesting is (spoilers follow, but they're only spoilers if you haven't read the original Southern Vampire Mysteries books): if the television series is true to the spirit of Charlaine Harris' book series, then Bill and Sookie won't be a couple forever. In fact, it would likely end next season. Hopefully the actual relationship between Moyer and Paquin will last longer.

Of course, this isn't the first time a couple on a television show have actually had a relationship in real life. The classic I can think of off the cuff is Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz »

I Love Lucy: The Very Brief Reunion of Lucy Ricardo and Fred Mertz

22 July 2009 7:17 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

After six seasons on the air, the hugely successful I Love Lucy sitcom ended. The stars had tired of the weekly grind but transitioned to the more expensive The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show specials. A baker's dozen of those were produced over three years. By the end, the writers had run dry and the marriage of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball had fallen apart. The day after the production wrapped, Ball filed for divorce.

Before the show ended, it was proposed that the Mertz's, played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance, continue in their own spin-off. The two had never liked each other off-screen but Frawley realized that the show could be very lucrative and agreed. Vance didn't want any part of it and refused.

Sadly, the end of the specials was the last time that the four actors would ever play their iconic characters. Arnaz continued to »

"Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg" recognizes a forgotten TV pioneer

20 July 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Quick — who was the first woman to appear in a network sitcom?

No, not Lucille Ball, but that would’ve been my guess.

Here’s a hint. She also won the first Emmy for Best Actress. I’ll even show you a picture.

Still no clue, I bet. Her name is Gertrude Berg. Wait, who?

Exactly. That’s why Aviva Kempner’s new documentary, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, is so important.

Berg was sort of the Oprah of her era — and she paved the way for women in the entertainment industry. Her radio show, The Goldbergs, premiered the week after the 1929 stock market crash and every day for 17 years, Berg rose at 6 a.m., wrote that day’s script, then went to the studio to produce the show and perform her role, Molly Goldberg.

In 1949, Berg brought The Goldbergs to television, where it was the first character-driven domestic sitcom. (When the »

Cy Coleman Compilation to Feature Fiona Apple, Patty Griffin, Nikka Costa, Missy Higgins, Many More

20 July 2009 7:25 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Hear the words "The Best Is Yet To Come" and a dapper Sinatra will likely flash across your mind, dressed to the nines in black coattails and topped with a hat, crooning those famous lyrics. Less likely to come to mind is Cy Coleman, the man behind this and many of the other songs that fill our collective consciousness. The composer and songwriter's life catalog amounts to over 2,000 songs, a number of which were popularized by the likes of Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole on the radio, and Lucille Ball on the Broadway stage. On Sept. 15, a new compilation of Coleman songs entitled (you guessed it) The Best Is Yet To Come will be released on New West Records. The record will include renditions of Coleman songs by 12 modern songstresses, including Nikka Costa, Missy Higgins, Madeleine Peyroux and Patty Griffin. »

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Yoo-Hoo! Mrs. Goldberg's Hitting the Big Screen

Did you know that Lucille Ball was not the first woman of sitcom television land? In fact, there was another who not only came before the famous redhead, but who should also be counted as one of the pioneers behind the screen? No? I didn't either.

Enter Gertrude Berg, who is the focus of Aviva Kempner's new documentary Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, which is hitting theaters this week in New York City before heading to DC on the 17th and La on the 24th. This isn't your heart-tugging, dramatic art doc, but rather a straight-forward account of someone we should know because, frankly, her success was impressive. Turns out that before I Love Lucy, there was a show radio show that hit television called The Goldbergs. It was Berg's own creation -- a brainchild she shopped around herself, wrote, »
