A second installment of Peter Jackson-directed movie "Silent Hill" is likely to start its production soon. In a recent interview with Shock Till You Drop, special makeup effects designer Paul Jones hinted that the shooting for "Silent Hill 2" will be kicked off in 2010. "Roger (Avary) has some awesome ideas and hopefully we're going to bring that to fruition sometime next year," he revealed.
"I was working on storyboards for that around the same time last year." Jones additionally claimed, "It's going to be pretty crazy. There's a lot of cool stuff in there." However, he remained mum when asked whether or not the script has been completed.
"Silent Hill 2" will serve as the follow-up to 2006 horror thriller movie "Silent Hill", which is a movie adaptation of a video game with the same title. The first film centers on a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child's illness. »

A few of our friends are currently up in Toronto visiting the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife, which is being directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and they got some updates on various projects that he's either directing or producing. First up, Styd talked with special makeup effects designer Paul Jones about Silent Hill 2, which has been in development for a while. "It's going to be pretty crazy. There's a lot of cool stuff in there. Roger (Avary) has some awesome ideas and hopefully we're going to bring that to fruition sometime next year," Jones revealed. There's also another new update on Anderson's The Three Musteketeers 3D as well. In regards to Silent Hill 2, our last update was in September, which is when we reported that writer Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida would both be back in their original roles. But besides that, we haven't heard about a »

ShockTillYouDrop stopped by the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife where Silent Hill's special makeup effects designer Paul Jones gave an update for the upcoming sequel, saying production could begin as early as next year.
I was working on storyboards for that around the same time last year. It's going to be pretty crazy. There's a lot of cool stuff in there. Roger [Avary] has some awesome ideas and hopefully we're going to bring that to fruition sometime next year.
Avary wrote the original Silent Hill and was hired to write the sequel right before he was sentenced to prison for gross vehicular manslaughter. A judge allowed Avary to enter a furlough program that allowed him to continue to write the script for Silent Hill 2. Jones would not comment on whether the script was complete.
A 2010 start date may be a little generous considering Silent Hill 2 currently has no director or cast attached. »

If you don’t already know the story of A Christmas Carol by now, well… It might not be your fault, but it is an impressive feat. As one of the most well-known stories in the world, Charles Dickens’ 166-year-old story of redemption is one that has been adapted into countless plays, movies and television specials; including a Disney cartoon I fondly remember (with Scrooge McDuck playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge, of course).
Even if you don’t know the story, surely you recognize elements of it. The grumpy Scrooge, the three Christmas ghosts, the poor family with a dying kid, the scary confrontation at a graveyard, the sickeningly sweet ending. It is the very definition of a classic. Scrooge, played by Jim Carrey, is a rich grinch desperately in need of learning the spirit of charity and giving embedded in Christmas. He does one Christmas Eve after a »

Oscar winning writer/director Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe) may be Tweeting about his experiences in jail.
Avary started his one year of incarceration on October 25 after pleading guilty to felony manslaughter. The charges stemmed from a January 2008 DUI crash that resulted in the death of a passenger. He’s reportedly serving time through the work furlough program, which allows him to leave the jail, go to work, and return to his cell by a night curfew.
Four days later came a post on his Twitter account possibly critiquing the architecture of his Ventura County Jail. “The building is an imposing example of the Brutalist architectural movement. The windows are designed so as to not let too much light in.”
This is followed up the next day by this Tweet, “The channels on the Rec Room television cannot be changed, and it’s inexplicably always tuned to Fox.” Obligatory »

Roger Avary's first Tweet as an incarcerated man hit the Web this afternoon, four days after the writer-director checked into the Ventura County Jail to begin his one-year sentence for felony manslaughter. "The building is an imposing example of the Brutalist architectural movement," Avary wrote. "The windows are designed so as to not let too much light in." Not that he's necessarily tweeting from the jail yard, however. Avary's clean record prior to his DUI accident last year -- which killed a passenger in his vehicle -- made him eligible for work-furlough: He's out working on projects during the day, and back by curfew for a night in his cell. So for all we know he's just starting another one of his Twitterplays or describing Harvey Weinstein's office. [Twitter] »

The Hollywood Reporter today broke news that will be sure to tarnish the image of squeaky clean (yawn inspiring) gym bunny Jessica Biel. Jess has signed on to produce and star in Julia Brownell’s debut feature F*cking Engaged. The ‘raunchy comedy’ centres around a couple who pledge to have sex every day in the approach to their wedding to avoid turning into their parents. It sounds hilarious.
Biel, currently shooting her role as sassy Carissa Sosa in the new A-Team Movie, will next be seen in romantic comedy Nailed alongside Catherine Keener and Jake Gyllenhall. We hold out more hope for this and for the spring release of ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day in which she will reportedly appear. Nevertheless, tabloids worldwide will be delighted they may finally (and explicitly) confirm that Jessica Biel is engaged. Jess herself might also be rather glad of a role where she »

For the past 20 years or so, Hollywood has seemed intent on proving that video games aren't fit to be cinematic source material. How else to explain the dismal quality of the average game-to-film adaptation? But games and movies aren't inherently incompatible, provided that directors use some common sense when heading down that treacherous adaptation path. Here's my list of five guidelines that, if followed to the letter, should help future filmmakers succeed where so many before them have stumbled.
1. Costume changes are okay.
As with comics, video game heroes are often defined by their distinctive get-ups. And in certain instances -- like Lara Croft's snug spelunking short-shorts and T-shirt -- those outfits are capable of making a relatively easy transition to the silver screen. But the rest of the time, keeping a little too close to a game character's clothing makes it impossible to take the material seriously.

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

No, this isn't about Roman Polanski, though the timing couldn't be eerier.
Don't ask me how I've become the blogger-in-chief for the early '90s -- I guess just because I was there. But now that the chickens are coming home to roost, well ...
To wit: I was saddened to see in TheWrap yesterday that my old friend Roger Avary -- who shares as many Academy Awards as Quentin Tarantino (one-half -- they split the screenwriting one for "Pulp Fiction," meaning they either ha... »

Silent Hill - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 4/2006
Saying that Silent Hill is the best movie yet based on a horror video game will no doubt strike many as damning with faint praise. Sure, when the competition is the likes of Doom, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the, ahem, oeuvre of Uwe Boll, there’s really nowhere to go but up. This time, though, you get more of a sense of a filmmaker committing to making a real movie out of the source material instead of just hitching a who-cares plot onto a marketable title. Not that the storyline of Silent Hill is especially complex, but director Christophe Gans and screenwriter Roger Avary are clearly committed to recreating the game experience in the cinematic medium; having never played it myself, »

Roger Avary is one of those guys whose professional work I have separated from any rumors about him personally. Oscar winner or not, Roger Avary is about to do a full year in prison, with a 5-year probation period after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges back in August. The entire ordeal stems from a drunk-driving incident where Avary, liquored out of his mind, wrapped his Mercedes around a telephone pole while going 100 miles per hour. The accident killed his passenger and friend Andreas Zini and badly injured his wife, who was thrown from the car on impact. Besides jail time, Avary has settled a $4.1 million dollar civil lawsuit with Zini’s family. Zini was killed while on his honeymoon and visiting Avary. Luckily for one half of the honeymooning couple, Zini’s wife was in another car when the accident took place in the city of Ojai, 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles. If the name Roger Avary doesn’t ring any bells, he was a co-writer on Quentin Tarantino »

Screenwriter and director Roger Avary, who won an Academy Award for co-writing Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, was sentenced to one year in prison this week after pleading guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter for a fatal car crash that occurred last year. Avary was driving at speeds of around 100 mph while under the influence of alcohol before his car crashed into a telephone pole. Both Avary and his wife, Gretchen Avary, were injured; the other passenger was killed.
Avary was recently hired to write the screenplay for the upcoming sequel to Silent Hill. The judge sentencing Avary allowed the Rules of Attraction director to be entered into a furlough program that will allow him to write Silent Hill 2 and his other screenwriting commitment, Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
After serving his sentence, Avary will perform five years of probation after his release. He has reached a settlement with the widow and »

It's been a rough week for celebrities. You've doubtless read about Roman Polanski's situation (latest here), and earlier today we reported on the sentencing of Award-winning screenwriter Roger Avary (more here). Now comes word that David Letterman has found himself in a "compromising" situation.
On the Late Show tonight, Letterman told his audience that he has been the victim of an alleged extortion attempt, and admitted to having sexual relations with several members of his staff, reports CNN.
This, according to a press release from his production company. Letterman admitted to having sexual relationships with female staff members, his company says.
During the taping of the Late Show, Letterman made his mea culpa in the Ed Sullivan Theater. "This morning, I did something I've never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury."
So what exactly is the story behind the story here? »
