Robert Downey Jr. And Ben Stiller Turn Down Oscars Hosting Gig, So Who's The Right Fit For The Job?

3 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

While Ricky Gervais is busy working on his routine for hosting the Golden Globes, the folks orchestrating the Academy Awards are feverishly hunting for a host of their own.

Hugh Jackman, last year's master of ceremonies, has already turned down the gig, and now it appears that the dynamic duo of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. have declined the opportunity to host in tandem as well. The obvious questions is, what is it about the Academy Awards that's putting these prospective hosts off? Does Oscar have something in his teeth?

Maybe it's a simple matter of not asking the right people, since Hollywood has no shortage of talented professionals that could do the award ceremony justice. If I were in charge of selecting a host, here are some of the folks that I'd consider.

Adam Goldberg: Shooting To The Music

By

Alex Simon

Adam Goldberg first brought his unique brand of manic intensity to Richard Linklater’s ensemble classic Dazed and Confused in 1993 and has since been featured in such varied films as 2 Days in Paris, A Beautiful Mind, Saving Private Ryan, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Hebrew Hammer and I Love Your Work, which he also directed. An actor with a talent for mining the neuroses of his character for both comedic and dramatic effect, Goldberg also played recurring roles in “Friends” and “Entourage.” Goldberg's music CD, "LANDy, Eros And Omissions," hit shelves June 23 of this year from Nine Yards Records.

Goldberg’s latest film, (Untitled), is a satirical comedy that has him playing Adrian Jacobs, a brooding avant-garde composer who falls for the gorgeous owner (Marley Shelton) of a trendy New York art gallery. The quirky worlds »

'This Is It' Dances to the Top of Weekend Box Office

1 November 2009 6:25 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

There is nowhere but atop the chart for the late Michael Jackson as his backstage documentary "This Is It" nabbed the #1 spot at the North American box office. Despite making a so-so start, the movie that compiled the late King of Pop's rehearsal footage did reign over the Halloween weekend with an estimation of $21.3 million.

Since it was released on Wednesday, October 28, the Kenny Ortega-directed movie has produced around $32.5 million in North America alone. Overseas, it garnered approximately $68.5 million, including $10.4 million in Japan, $6.3 million in Germany, $5.8 million in France and $3.2 million in China. Both domestic and international numbers brought the movie to the total of $101 million worldwide.

The hundred-plus bow easily made "This Is It" the highest-grossing concert film worldwide. It bested over Miley Cyrus' "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" which scored $70.6 million worldwide in 2008. "It was expected to be the top-grossing film, »

Jackson's This Is It Moonwalks To Top Of U.S. Box Office

1 November 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Jackson's This Is It rehearsal documentary has soared to the top of the U.S. box office, taking $21.3 million (£13.3 million) in its opening weekend (30Oct-01Nov09).

The film, which follows the Thriller legend as he prepared for his ill-fated London concerts, premiered worldwide on Wednesday.

Within five days This Is It has earned a massive $32.5 million (£20.3 million) in the states and $101 million (£63.1 million) worldwide - prompting Sony bosses to extend its run in the U.S. until Thanksgiving weekend (begs27Nov09), and add showtimes in other territories on a country-by-country basis.

However, its success still falls short of last year's $31.1 million (£19.4 million) U.S. opening weekend for Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.

This Is It bumped low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity from number one to the second spot, with $16.5 million (£10.3 million) in earnings; however, moviegoers proved they were seeking a thrill over the Halloween weekend, helping Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler's crime drama Law Abiding Citizen land at number three with $7.3 million (£4.6 million) in earnings.

Rounding out the top five is Vince Vaughn's comedy Couples Retreat and horror film Saw VI, earning $6.1 million (£3.8 million) and $5.6 million (£3.5 million) respectively. »

“Ticket Stubs” review of ‘A Serious Man‘ by Austin Lugar

for MovieSet.com

As we wrap Halloween Movie Month at MovieSet.com, I decided to check out a scary movie. No I didn’t go out and see Saw VI, Cirque de Freak or the horrifying looking Couples Retreat. I decided to check out the latest Coen Brothers’ creation: A Serious Man.

Writer/director Ethan Coen and actor Aaron Wolff on the set of writer/directors Joel & Ethan Coen’s A Serious Man, a Focus Features release.

Now I’m sure all of you’re are screaming at your computer screens in protest demanding that I rightfully categorize it as a drama or even a drama-edy not a horror film. Now let’s just look at what constitutes a horror movie.

To me the effective horror movies are ones where bad things are happening to relatively good people. What’s »

Discuss: The Characters We Wish Were Serialized

29 October 2009 3:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There are times when our fandom gets satiated. We see a world stretch out before us on the big screen, come to adore a character, and then get to follow him or her through a number of films. In some cases, they might even start to feel like an old friend, popping up over and over again. We'll become attuned to their swagger, the tone of their voice, the moments they love or loathe. Other characters, their presence in our lives is deliciously, yet painfully brief -- destined only for repeat viewings of the same scenes, the same reactions, the same outcome over and over again.

The more our movie world leans towards sequels, the more part of me wishes certain characters could have continuing life on the big screen. (Played by the same actor, of course. No Vince Vaughn/Norman Bates recasts allowed.) On the mind from earlier this month, »
