Sarah Jessica Parker in talks to star in ‘Ivy’

26 June 2008 12:07 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Sarah Jessica Parker is deeply in love with New York City. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Sex and the City” star is in talks to topline “The Ivy Chronicles,” another comedy set in the Big Apple.

Based on the novel by Karen Quinn, the film centers on Ivy Ames, a wealthy Upper East Side mother who relocates into a cheapo downtown apartment after losing her dream job and getting a divorce.

In a quest for money to feed her children, Ivy opens a business to help upper-middle-class mothers get their kids into New York’s best kindergartens.

Warner Bros. will develop and distribute the project, which does indeed sound like a crossing between “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Nanny Diaries.”

Besides the big-screen adaptations of “Sex and the City,” Parker recently starred alongside Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page in “Smart People.”

Miller Wears Fake Boobs For G.I. Joe

23 June 2008 12:06 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Sienna Miller was forced to wear fake breasts for her role in forthcoming action movie G.I. Joe - because her own cleavage was not big enough for director Stephen Sommers.

The Alfie star joins Dennis Quaid and Brendan Fraser to play femme fatale The Baroness in the upcoming movie, which is based on the popular U.S. play figure and TV series.

But Miller admits she was left slightly stunned when Sommers told her her small chest had to be given an extra boost so she would look more curvaceous on screen.

She says, "(I wear a) tight black leather outfit. And much bigger boobs.

"They gave me these things that looked like chicken fillets. The director said, 'I'm gonna be honest, I like girls with big boobs', and I don't have them so we made them bigger.

"At least he's honest. But I was mildly offended."

The Texan, who also owns property in rural Montana, says, "The train is going down the tracks. We have a lot of family there and we have a really nice plot of land.

"We have 30 or 40 friends and family members within two miles of us. It's kind of a no-brainer."

Quaid Campaigns For Patients' Rights

15 May 2008 5:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actor Dennis Quaid is calling on the U.S. government to preserve patients' rights to sue drugmakers for injuries.

The actor's twin babies had to fight for their lives last year when they were mistakenly given a near-fatal overdose of blood thinner Heparin, and Quaid insists the mishap could have been avoided if there was a better system of marking medicines.

California regulators fined hospital bosses $25,000 (GBP12,500) after concluding the failure of staff at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to follow their own procedures resulted in incorrect doses of the drug being administered to Quaid's infants and other children.

Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington have sued Baxter International Inc, the maker of the blood-thinning drug given to his twins

On Wednesday, Quaid said victims of harm from medicines should be able to seek damages from manufacturers in state courts.

He says, "I believe if preemption of lawsuits is allowed to prevail, it will basically make all of us, the public, uninformed and uncompensated lab rats."

Overture Films is boarding the sci-fi action film Pandorum, with Dennis Quaid (Legion, The Horsemen) and Ben Foster (30 Days of Night) in final negotiations to star. The movie is being produced by Germany's Constantin Film with its subsidiary Impact Pictures; the pair are behind the "Resident Evil" franchise. "Pandorum" centers on mysterious events aboard an abandoned space craft, with Quaid and Foster as crewmen who must discover what's happened to them and to the planet they're orbiting. German helmer Christian Alvart (Case 39, Antibodies) is directing from a script he wrote with Travis Milloy. The movie is scheduled to shoot this summer in Berlin; there was no word on whether Overture had acquired a waiver from SAG. Overture Films will release the film in North America.

Movie star Dennis Quaid has quietly bought 500 acres (202.3 hectares) of Montana countryside from his famous dead neighbours.

His sprawling estate now includes bridleways, rolling fields and a three mile (4.8 kilometres) stretch of his own private creek.

Of his retreat, Quaid boasts, "I can walk out my door and walk about 100 miles without crossing a road."

Movie Work Wrecks Quaid's Golf Game

16 April 2008 7:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Acting has cost Dennis Quaid his title as the world's top celebrity golfer - he thinks Samuel L. Jackson deserves the crown.

The Rookie star admits he likes to play a round of golf daily when he isn't working on a film, but he has been so busy on sets since the golfing world crowned him the best celebrity on the circuit, he fears his game isn't what it used to be.

He tells Outside's Go magazine, "I was a scratch golfer two years ago for about 30 minutes. Then I got a job and worked for about an entire year straight.

"In order to be good, you have to be there five days a week."

Critics Not Invited To Prom Night

11 April 2008 10:31 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

You won't be reading any reviews for it, but Sony Screen Gems's horror flick Prom Night is the favorite among box-office analysts to win this weekend's movie competition. Today's (Friday) Los Angeles Times reported that tracking surveys indicate that the film will take in $18-22 million, about the same as it cost to produce. The likely No. 2 film, according to the analysts, is the Keanu Reeves-Forest Whitaker drama Street Kings, which analysts figure will bring in $10-12 million. But Daily Variety pointed out that, with the exception of Cloverfield, horror films have performed weekly this year. It suggests that Street Kings could best it. Also opening this weekend, but in only about 1,100 theaters, is Miramax's Smart People, with Ellen Page of Juno, Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker. In limited release, France's controversial award winner Persepolis, an animated film -- it now has an English soundtrack -- about a girl's experiences growing up in Iran at the time of the Islamic revolution, is due to open in 136 theaters.

Smart People

10 April 2008 2:02 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Even without Thomas Haden Church's familiar presence as a grubby ne'er-do-well, Smart People would still strongly recall Alexander Payne's Sideways, with its story of an unloveable, acerbic, pretentious middle-aged clot tentatively pursuing redemption through the love of a good woman. But even more so than in Sideways, there's a question of whether he actually deserves either redemption or love. Dennis Quaid's arrogant professor character isn't just the cinematic stereotype of a mildly off-putting geek who needs a wardrobe change and some dancing lessons to become a suave hero; he's an obnoxious, self-absorbed ass, the kind of guy who deliberately parks his beat-up old Saab across two parking spots, and who covers his bad behavior with sloppy lies, then gets angry at anyone who isn't fooled. He could stand in for Jeff Daniels' similarly toxic snob in The Squid And The Whale, if only he were a little smarter and a.

Opening This Week

By Neil Pedley

Prom queens and street kings hold court this week at the multiplexes while the college professors of "Smart People" and "The Visitor" preside at the art houses.

"Body of War"

Talk show legend Phil Donahue hands over the mic to Iraqi war veteran Tomas Young in this hard-hitting documentary that contrasts Young's struggle to re-enter civilian life as a paraplegic and anti-war activist with archival footage of an overeager U.S. Congress and what the filmmakers view as their hasty decision to greenlight the invasion. Although the film, co-directed by Donahue and Ellen Spiro, was named best documentary of 2007 by the National Board of Review, "Body of War" has earned equal attention for its soundtrack led by two tracks from Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, with all proceeds going to the non-profit organization Iraq Veterans Against The War. Opens in New York.

Church Loves To Show Off 'His Sticky Fruit'

4 April 2008 10:30 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Sideways star Thomas Haden Church has developed a reputation for flashing his genitals to male co-stars on the sets of his films.

The actor admits he did it for laughs on the Sideways set and ruined Dennis Quaid's composure on the set of new film Smart People.

Church reveals he uses nude scenes to surprise his co-stars.

In Smart People, he's supposed to be lying naked on his belly but he rolled over for one hilarious take.

He says, "I did one that was frontally nude to Dennis. Dennis and the cameraman enjoyed that... Dennis whirled in disgust and left the set.

"I did the same thing in Sideways too but they're never big fans of your sticky fruits flopping around back at the studio. They're never big fans of that activity."

Church and Quaid's co-star Sarah Jessica Parker regrets the fact she was not on the set that day: "I was not privileged to be there for the sticky fruit alert."

Quaid Calls For Bar-code Medicine System, Or He'll Sue

28 March 2008 11:26 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Dennis Quaid has threatened to sue staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles if they refuse to introduce a bar-code system to prevent medical mishaps.

The actor's twin babies had to fight for their lives there last year when they were mistakenly given a near-fatal overdose of blood thinner Heparin and Quaid insists the mishap could have been avoided if there was a better system of marking medicines.

California regulators have already fined hospital bosses $25,000 (GBP12,500) after concluding the failure of staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to follow their own procedures resulted in incorrect doses of the drug being administered to Quaid's infants and other children.

And the actor has revealed he may also take legal action if hospital chiefs don't act to improve patient safety.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Association of Healthcare Journalists on Thursday, Quaid said, "We want them to do the right thing. We're still waiting, although time is running short for us."

The Rookie star is championing the implementation of a bar-code system that scans all medication before it is administered to patients - to avoid mistakes like the one that almost cost his babies their lives.

This system has been recommended by America's top medical experts.

He adds, "They have a bar-code system in every checkout stand of every supermarket in the country, so how could it be so complicated."

Quaid Twins Overdose Hospital Is Fined

20 March 2008 6:35 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

California regulators have fined a Los Angeles hospital $25,000 (GBP12,500) for giving overdoses of a blood-thinning drug to three children, including Dennis Quaid's newborn twins.

Following an investigation, the California Department Of Public Health concluded the failure of staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to follow their own procedures resulted in incorrect doses of Heparin being administered to children.

The report rules the overdoses were "preventable medication errors".

The Traffic actor and his wife Kimberly's babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were given almost fatal overdoses of the injectable anticoagulant in November - Cedars-Sinai staff gave the babies 1,000 times the normal 10-unit dose of Heparin shortly after they were born to a surrogate mother.

The Quaid twins have since recovered from the incident.
