(The Broken Lizard guys, along with Cobie Smulders, on the set of The Slammin' Salmon, above.)

by Terry Keefe

We had the opportunity to interview most of the members of the Broken Lizard comedy team last January, when they were about to premiere their new feature The Slammin' Salmon at Slamdance. It's been a tough year for independent films in search of distribution, to say the least, but it's nice to see The Slammin' Salmon getting a theatrical release from Anchor Bay on December 11th. Check out our interview with the guys, it's a fun one. The film stars the Lizards: Kevin Heffernan, Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Steve Lemme, and Erik Stolhanske, along with Michael Clarke Duncan, Vivica Fox, Olivia Munn (Attack of the Show, Iron Man 2) , Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), and April Bowlby (Two and a Half Men). »

There is plenty of news and whatnots happening in the world of film this evening, so we thought we'd throw together a quick round of News & Notes, so that you can keep it all straight. We start, as we always do, with something mildly interesting. As per my newly fashioned format, the first few words of each item serve as the link to the source. Just give them a click to read more. Steve Carell is working on a new comedy for Warner Bros., entitled Missing Links. He will play a golfer who joins fellow municipal course schlubs to take a shot at the country club down the road. Very original. (THR) The Cup of Tears is a new sci-fi samurai flick that we picked up via our friends over at First Showing. It is more than a little badass, mixing the aesthetic of 300 with the badassery that Ninja Assassin could've only hoped to achieve. (First »

Anchor Bay Picks up Slammin’ Salmon

26 October 2009 12:54 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Anchor Bay has picked up the latest comedy from the Broken Lizard crew titled Slammin’ Salmon and is planning a U.S. release December 11, 2009.

The comedy is about a team of waiters challenged to sell the most in a night to satisfy their intimidating owner, played by Michael Clarke Duncan.  Aside from the usual cast, there are Cobie Smulders from “How I Met Your Mother,” Vivica A. Fox, Will Forte, and April Bowlby.

I had the opportunity to see this at the SxSW Film Festival in Austin last March and I thought it was pretty funny. It’s no Super Troopers, but most will agree there are few comedies of that caliber.  Salmon is consistently goofy and Clarke Duncan is hilarious. It’s similar to Waiting… only without the typical raunchy humor associated with restaurant stories.

Side note: director and Lizard writer Kevin Heffernan was at the screening for a »

Broken Lizard’s The Slammin’ Salmon Will Finally Hit Theaters This December

25 October 2009 9:11 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Anchor Bay Films is going to get a pass from me for a while because they picked up Broken Lizard’s newest film, “The Slammin’ Salmon” and will distribute it to theaters this December.  Every time I saw an update from Bl on Facebook, I would wonder when I would finally get to see the movie which premiered at Slamdance this past January.  Now I get to see it before the end of the year and I’m beyond excited.  Hit the jump for details.

Some people don’t enjoy the comedy of Broken Lizard but I try not to associate with these people.  While I still think their breakout film “Super Troopers” is their best, I also have “Club Dread” and “Beerfest” sitting on my shelf.  But “Super Troopers” is one of those rare comedies that only gets better with every viewing.  While it’s unfair for me to »

Uma Thurman Confirms Talks with Tarantino about Kill Bill 3

16 October 2009 3:48 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

A few weeks ago, Quentin Tarantino excited fans everywhere when he promised a sequel to Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

"The Bride will fight again!" he said.

Uma Thurman has now followed that up with confirmation that she has spoken with Tarantino about the project, which many speculate may involve a showdown between The Bride's daughter and the daughter of Vernita Green (played by Vivica Fox), one of The Bride's victims in Kill Bill: Vol. 1.

Speaking with MTV, Thurman said:

We did chat, we did chat. He has not yet finished the script. I don't even really know if he's really started it, although I got a taste of some of his ideas and they are really good.... He has started to share with me what he was thinking, and it's awesome.

So, it sounds as if we can definitely expect a third Kill Bill ... at some point. Remember how »

Chris Rock's Hair-Raising Lawsuit! Injunction Filed Against Comedian's "Good Hair"

7 October 2009 6:50 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Chris Rock is being sued for $5 million by Regina Kimbell, producer and director of "My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage."

Kimbell is saying that Rock's upcoming film, "Good Hair" (opening in limited release this Friday), copied her "Nappy Roots" documentary. She claims that, "after hearing the buzz about the film, Rock requested a private screening at Paramount Studios. Unaware that Rock had a deal to produce a black hair documentary for HBO, Kimbell agreed to let him see the film."

"Good Hair" is directed by Jeff Stilson with the script written by Lance Crouther, Paul Marchand, Rock, Chuck Sklar, and Stilson.

So the issue is -- there are two documentaries about African-American hair, and Rock copied Kimbell's take on the subject. Really? A good copyright lawsuit argues that the way ideas are expressed are very similar. Upon looking at trailers for both films, I don't think there's a »

Tarantino Talks Kill Bill 3

2 October 2009 2:42 AM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Writer/director Quentin "Inglourious Basterds" Tarantino is reportedly developing, with actress Uma 'The Bride' Thurman, Kill Bill 3. Thurman, who gave an Oscar-worthy, gutsy performance in the first 2 Golden Globe/ Grammy Award-nominated Kill Bill films, (also receiving a co-writer credit), played the character of former 'Deadly Viper' assassin 'Beatrix Kiddo', aka 'Black Mamba'. The new sequel will be given a 10-year break in the Kill Bill timeline, for Beatrix to spend time with daughter 'Beebe' she conceived with 'Bill' (David Carradine). Tarantino first raised the spectre of Kill Bill 3 during production of the original movie, split into 2 stand-alone features, proposing the idea of 'Nikki Bell' (Ambrosia Kelley), the daughter of 'Vernita Green' aka 'Copperhead' (Vivica A. Fox), seeking revenge on 'The Bride', after witnessing Beatrix kill her mother, in a vicious knife fight in the kitchen of Green's suburban family home. At that time Thurman's 'Bride' character said that »

Tarantino Wants to Make Kill Bill: Volume 3

1 October 2009 5:11 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In an interview on the Italian talk show “Parla Con Me,” director Quentin Tarantino answered questions about his life and filmography.  Then he took the opportunity to confirm he may make a third movie following Kill Bill: Vol 1 and Kill Bill: Vol 2.  “The Bride will fight again!”

At one point the interviewer starts asking about the rumored follow-ups to his more successful films.  Tarantino says, “It will never happen” to a Pulp Fiction sequel (no Vega brothers movie), he’s still saying maybe to an Inglourious Basterds prequel, and then she starts to move on.  Tarantino, seeing an opportunity to make a major global announcement, says, “Wait, you didn’t ask the third thing.  Would I ever do a Kill Bill: Volume 3?”  She dutifully asks, he says yes, and the crowd goes wild.

After the interview is over, Tarantino says, “I gotta wait a couple years because I wanted 10 years to pass. »
