Blu-Ray Review: Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ a Modern Masterpiece

Chicago – Michael Mann might first seem the ideal fit for Blu-Ray. He’s a notorious perfectionist, apparent in every frame of his remarkable output of films that includes such great modern classics as “Manhunter,” “The Insider,” “Collateral,” and “Public Enemies”. But one of Mann’s best films, “Heat,” recently released on Blu-Ray, is an interesting example of a director who has a vision that shouldn’t necessarily be overly polished by the HD format. The film looks like Mann wants it - gritty, dark, and like, well, actual film. It’s a release that some buyers may think doesn’t look “HD enough,” but to this Mann aficionado thinks that it looks just right.

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.
Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

I've been waiting all summer to see how things turned out for Violet and her baby on Private Practice. Let's face it. Things looked bleak at the end of season two when Violet's baby was hacked out of her by a crazy person, and they didn't look any better at the beginning of season three. So I was pretty ecstatic with how things turned out.
I must admit, though, the way things were going, I really wasn't sure who was in that casket that started the episode until we were getting close to the end. It wasn't small enough to be a baby's casket (thank goodness), and I was pretty sure Amy Brenneman was planning on sticking around, so it was unlikely that Violet was in the casket. Still, it was touch and go there for a while, and either one of them could have died.

There are more NBC additions now available. including the full episode from Saturday's "Saturday Night Live" featuring Megan Fox and U2 is now online. From "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" there are some very funny highlights from last night’s show, including the Sesame Street characters commenting on the Obama health care plan. Plus, the Newark mayor put Conan on the “No Fly” list in a Youtube video. Conan crafted a response and spoke to the mayor on last night’s show. Private Practice returns to ABC (Oct. 1, 10/9c) with a bloody good premiere. Yes, it's good. And yes, it's very bloody.
When we last saw Violet (Amy Brenneman), she was being chopped up by her psycho patient, who wanted to steal her baby. The beginning of the premiere kicks off seconds later and — spoiler alert — Violet lives.

Thursday’s SAG election was a victory for the moderate coalition. Yet, strangely enough, the leaders of the losing hardline faction will all find seats on the national board, and will continue to be a shadow government within the union’s Hollywood board—a board on which none of the key moderate leaders will be voting members.
Yes, the moderates (Unite for Strength (Ufs) / Usan / Rbd / independents) won the national offices – President and Secretary-Treasurer – and picked up additional national board seats and many on the Hollywood board as well. But with SAG, the story is never simple.

Turn on your TV in the next few weeks, and you might feel as if you've been transported back ten years because of all the familiar faces you'll see. Regis Philbin returned to do the 10th anniversary edition of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," a show that took the world by storm when it premiered in August 1999. When it returned in November, it claimed the #1 spot in the ratings, making it the most-watched show of that year. Regis' "Millionaire" hosting gig came and went, but the show lived on in several incarnations and made a major contribution to the revival of the art of the game show. After "Millionaire," the genre was back in prime time and bigger than ever, with seven-digit cash prizes, models holding suitcases, and lots and lots of intimidating lighting cues.

Grey’s Anatomy became a bastion of estrogen-infused primetime goodness. It did. We can’t fight that fact. Just as the Oc dragged in viewers by the boatloads with its promises of youth and promiscuity, Grey’s uses alluring females pining for the sexy bachelors they work with on a daily basis. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Private Practice, the spin-off series of Grey’s Anatomy retains a lot of the romance-heavy themes; however, it may shock the male demographic to find out what the faithful female audience has known since its first season: there is actually some medical know-how to the show’s core. The same can be said of Grey’s earlier seasons, but it slowly shifted off-base so that any medical relevance has little to no impact on the plots – not so for Private Practice.

The Grey's Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice, had a little trouble getting out of the gates, but things started coming together pretty well in season two. The series started working the entire ensemble, and things moved toward a much more rounded, cohesive, and engaging show. The cast -Kate Walsh (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Tim Daly (“The Nine”), Audra McDonald (“A Raisin in the Sun”), Paul Adelstein (“Prison Break”), KaDee Strickland (American Gangster), Chris Lowell (“Veronica Mars”), with Taye Diggs (“Rent”) and Amy Brenneman (“Judging Amy”) - work together quite well in a show whose best feature is the fact that it doesn't take itself seriously. »

Chicago – Before the new fall season really gets underway, we thought we’d take a look back at several of the shows recently released or about to be released on DVD in season sets from ABC Studios and Buena Vista Home Video including the first season of “Castle,” the third season of “Ugly Betty,” the second season of “Private Practice,” and the fifth season of “Grey’s Anatomy”.

So we know Violet survives on Private Practice. Every single report and teaser from the set has confirmed this for about three months, and besides, like they were going to kill Amy Brenneman off the show. She is way too awesome. Come on.
But here are three things about about Season 3 premiere on Thursday, October 1 that we definitely did not see coming but TV Guide hints cryptically this afternoon ...
The episode also includes a funeral. Violet may be alive, but she is in bad shape. Her baby boy, father still unknown, is missing. How is this all connected? What does it mean for the future of the little guy and his mom? We'll have to wait and find out when the Grey's Anatomy spinoff returns.

Violet to Survive, Katie to Be Tried on Private Practice

The Season Two finale of Private Practice ended with one of the most disturbing images in recent prime time TV history as Amy Brenneman's character, Violet Turner, was drugged and about to be cut open by some loon who wanted to yoink her baby.
But we know that Violet survives. She will come through. After all, Amy is back on the set, and they wouldn't dispatch one of their characters in such fashion.
Plus, you know Shonda Rhimes and her flair for the dramatic. While she loves a good cliffhanger, she also loves giving away spoilers / plot details in advance.
As for how she survives, look for Addison and Pete to help her pull through in the Private Practice season premiere October 1, according to E! Online reports.
The other good news? Katie Kent (Amanda Foreman), the crazy lady who was going to do the ridiculous C-section, is apprehended and on trial by November. »

Prepare yourself with the biggest box of tissues you can find because when Grey's Anatomy returns on Sept. 24, everyone will be crying their eyes out.
