Love and hate can be blind, and to date, I've mainly turned a blind eye to news on the very important Carrie Prejean front. This is, after all, a story so full of shallow characters that at one point, I actually seem to recall finding myself on the same side as Donald Trump. But seeing Ms. Prejean attempt to manhandle the "media" or Larry King the other night reminded me of a lesson I learned long, long ago. For as the late great Dewey Cox came to understand, you can never fully ignore The Temptations. "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" - The Temptations "Ain't That Pretty At All" - Warren Zevon "You Can't Judge A Book" - Bo Diddley "Miss America" - Styx "California Girls" - The Beach Boys "Pretty Look Isn't All" - The Heptones "Pretty Things" - Joe Firstman "Oh You Pretty Thing" - David Bowie "Hot... »

Critics agree that the soundtrack of Pirate Radio can't be beat, and the top-notch cast is a joy. So when it comes to the shaky plot and pacing, some can turn a blind eye: "There’s no denying the comic energy of the cast," Peter Travers writes in Rolling Stone . "Couple that with blasts of Brit rock from the Beatles and the Stones to Dusty Springfield and David Bowie, and the ship is unsinkable." Writer/director Richard Curtis introduces "characters and conflicts only to drop them," Stephanie Zacharek of Salon complains. But no matter: The best bits "take place in the movie's... »

Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!
First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.
Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.
The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »

Seven months ago, the movie formerly known as The Boat That Rocked had its UK theatrical release, followed up two months later with the DVD. Reviews at the time were so-so. Now the pic gets shipped state-side, renamed Pirate Radio and apparently with all the good parts taken out.
That said, the soundtrack contains 32 '60s classics from The Kinks to The Who to David Bowie — sending it straight to the "Listen, Don't Watch" category, and leaving us wondering if it belongs on our list of 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment – $49.99
Score: 7.5
The music game formula is nothing new. Start out with a plastic instrument and pick a song. Successful completion of a song unlocks more popular but increasingly difficult tunes. For your sequel, include the ability to play as various famous recording artists, both living and dead. Lather, rinse, repeat. Occasionally pick a specific band and focus a game around them (i.e. Beatles Rock Band) or them and the music they inspired (like when we found out that Van Halen somehow relates to Third Eye Blind).
So what separates Lego Rock Band from the rest of the pack? Personality. Anyone who has picked up Lego Star Wars or Lego Batman sees that something special that Lego-izing a popular character or moment can bring to the screen. The unique and quirky humor of seeing a stormtroopers explode in to a pile of brings or watching the »

Earlier today the first "Kick-Ass" teaser trailer hit the 'Net, and now we have another poster from Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's comic book series.
While the last batch of "Kick-Ass" posters offered a rear view of the film's costumed vigilantes peering over the city in heroic fashion, the new poster that debuted today on MySpace offers a decidedly different take on the Kick-Ass—the costumed alter ego of high school geek Dave Lizewski.
The poster sports the tag line: "I Can't Fly. But I Can Kick Your Ass." and features a bruised and battered Lizewski (as played by Aaron Johnson) staring out from an over-filled dumpster.
Head over to MySpace for a larger version of the image.

In 1966, arguably British pop music's finest era, the BBC played only two hours of rock n' roll every week but pirate radio blasted rock and pop from the high seas twenty-four hours a day and twenty-five million people, more than half the population of Britain, listened to these broadcasts every single day. Pirate Radio, opening in theaters everywhere on November 13th, is the latest film from Richard Curtis, the acclaimed director of Notting Hill and Love Actually, and chronicles these pioneers and the music that inspired a generation. The film stars Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman and an all-star cast of British actors that includes Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Rhys Darby, Nick Frost, Jack Davenport and Kenneth Branagh. We had an opportunity to travel to London a few weeks ago and speak with Bill Nighy, Nick Frost and the films young stars Tom Sturridge and Talulah Riley about the new »

It looks like Lionsgate couldn't wait until this weekend to roll out the first public trailer for "Kick-Ass," Matthew Vaughn's much-anticipated adaptation of the John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's comic book series. While the official "Kick-Ass" website teased the trailer's debut this weekend, you can now check it out here (or in high-definition on MySpace.com).
The story of a teenage comic fan who decides to become a costumed vigilante, this trailer gives the first peek at Vaughn's incredibly faithful adaptation of the series.
Of course, attendees at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego were able to check out much of this trailer's footage—as well as a bunch of extra "Kick-Ass" footage during the film's panel. After receiving rave reviews from fans at that show, things have continued to look bright for the project. "Kick-Ass" picked up distribution from Lionsgate in August, and an April 16 release date a month later. »

Adam Lambert is still a couple of weeks away from releasing his major-label debut, For Your Entertainment, but already he's considering other career options. In fact, Lambert would love to go back to Hollywood. But this time instead of competing on the "American Idol" stage, he would love to see his face on the silver screen.
"[Acting] is something that I've done a lot over the past eight or 10 years," he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. "If the opportunity came up and it was the right thing, I would love to be a part of a film. Right now, I am going to try to work on the album first. One thing at a time."

✒Monkey hears that last Monday the News of the World held a training camp for top executives to teach them to be nice to their staff. Apparently James Murdoch is keen on such David Brent-like exercises, and the execs, in dress-down mode, were asked to perform simple tasks and then make encouraging comments about each other's efforts. They found the whole caper ludicrous, and a ghastly foretaste of a pallid future. It seems editor Colin Myler didn't stay for the whole course, and if so Monkey can see why – if you can't wear a suit or abuse anyone, what's the point of being a tabloid editor?
✒Reactions were swift and scornful following the bashing of other channels by Channel 4's Julian Bellamy in an Rts after-dinner speech on Wednesday. They rely too much on remakes of old shows such as Doctor Who and Minder (the terrestrials) or imports (Sky), said the normally amiable programming chief, »

Earlier today we got our first peek at a new set of "Kick-Ass" movie posters featuring the film's costumed vigilantes, and now Lionsgate has launched the official website for the big-screen adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's ultraviolent comic book series.
Debuting today at iamkick-ass.com, the site doesn't offer much at the moment aside from a look at the same four images from the new posters and a countdown to the "Kick-Ass" trailer debut—which will apparently hit MySpace.com on November 15 at 1 Am Est.
However, the site does feature a cool introductory animation that sweeps through the city on its way up to the quartet of costumed characters perched on a ledge.
"Kick-Ass" is scheduled to hit theaters on April 16, featuring Aaron Johnson as superhero-wannabe Dave Lizewski, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as copycat "hero" The Red Mist, Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz as the father-daughter vigilante team »

A quartet of new posters from "Kick-Ass," Matthew Vaughn's big-screen adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s ultra-violent comic book series, have arrived online.
The four posters feature images of the film's costumed vigilantes: The Red Mist (played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson), Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage). Each character is poised on a rooftop, facing away from the camera, and the four posters form a skyline view when aligned.

Previously, we heard from Mintz-Plasse and co-star Clark Duke about the research (or lack thereof) they had to do for their roles in the much-anticipated film. Now that the project has received distribution from Lionsgate and has a release date set (April 16, 2010), fans who have been eagerly awaiting the film can finally look forward to seeing »

Appearance by '80s rocker in 'Twilight' sequel could be David Slade's move to attract older crowd.
Photo: Jim Dyson/ Getty Images
When "30 Days of Night" filmmaker David Slade took the reins of the "Twilight" sequel "Eclipse," his appointment seemed to raise more questions than answers. Would the über-violent filmmaker create the bloodiest film of the franchise? Would he attempt to broaden its appeal beyond women and teenage girls? How much of the creative voice would he wrestle away from Stephenie Meyer and make his own?
Now, many of those details are coming into view via a top-secret cameo Slade has filmed ... with a 1980s new-wave rock icon.
"[When I was young], I was a huge fan of a guy who does a cameo in 'Eclipse,' a guy named Peter Murphy," revealed Billy Burke, the veteran actor who plays Bella's father, Charlie Swan, when »

It’s a crime that there are only a dozen or so films about, or involving, the world of broadcast radio. Not too many actually deal with the tribulations of censorship, though, which is where the upcoming film Pirate Radio comes in.
The film is about a group of rogue DJ’s on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic who broadcast a pirate radio station in the 1960s, despite the laws forbidding Rock and Roll…all for the love of music. Given the fact that the film is all about 60’s Rock, you can believe that the soundtrack is pretty killer, and you may get to win a copy!
Starting today, keep an eye on our Twitter account every week for a trivia question involving “Radio in The Movies.” The question may be the name of the radio station from Grosse Point Blank or the name of the epic band in Airheads, »
