National Lampoon’s Animal House Returns to Cinemas

19 October 2009 5:04 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We’ve just found out today that Universal Studios are going to re-release John Landis’ classic movie, National Lampoon’s Animal House on  November 3rd 2009 for a limited time.

National Lampoon’s Animal House finally returns to UK cinemas, 31 years since its original release in 1978. With a legendary performance from John Belushi, and directed by John Landis, this is the comedy that started it all – Will Ferrell, Judd Apatow and the rest of the Hollywood Frat Pack are in its debt!

Larry Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent Dorfman (Stephen Furst) are freshman in college in 1962 and want to join a fraternity. After visiting several, including the snobby Omega house, they come to the Delta house pledge party. Here they meet handsome, compulsive womanizer Otter (Tim Matheson), his adventurous best friend Boone (Peter Reigert), Boone’s girlfriend Katy (Karen Allen), the daring thrill-seeker D-Day, the responsible Hoover, and the unforgettable Bluto. »

Interview: Karen Allen and the Kingdom of Her Crystal Life

29 September 2009 5:07 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Actress Karen Allen, who made a debut smash in the 1978 film ‘Animal House,’ is most likely to be remembered as Marion in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and 2008’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’

But the versatile performer is more than just a companion for Indiana Jones, having a long career in movies and on stage, including the films ‘The Glass Menagerie,’ ‘Challenger’ (playing astronaut Christa McAuliffe) and ‘The Perfect Storm.’

HollywoodChicago.com caught up with Ms. Allen during her appearance at the new Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, Illinois, as she signed autographs and introduced a special showing of Raiders. She talked about the two Indiana Jones movies, her connection to Paul Newman and how she barely kept her head above water while making ‘The Perfect Storm.’

Chicago – Actor Richard Dreyfuss is comfortable. This was on display as he was eating ice cream while talking about his career and life, just before an appearance at the brand new Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, Ill.

Dreyfuss made a huge splash in the 1970s starring in the triptych of classic films: “American Graffiti,” “Jaws,” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” He won his Best Actor Oscar – the youngest actor in Academy Award history to do so at the time – playing Elliott Garfield in the comedy, “The Goodbye Girl.”

Harrison Ford Says He’s Ready for Indy 5

21 September 2009 5:01 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Things seemed to be moving quickly on Indiana Jones 5.  In June, Shia Labeouf revealed Spielberg had “cracked the story” on a new adventure, and now Ford is discussing it like the script is coming together nicely.

“The story for the new ‘Indiana Jones’ is in the process of taking form,” Ford told French outlet Le Figaro last week. “Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again.”

The good news is Ford will be back as Indiana Jones at least long enough to grab the trademark fedora and whip.  The bad news is George Lucas has his hand in the script again, a process that resulted last time in nuclear fridge escapes and alien MacGuffin.  Keep in mind this was the »

Will Sean Connery Return For Indy 5?

20 September 2009 8:15 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

After last year’s critically acclaimed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Steven Spielberg has been reportedly working on the next installment in the Indiana Jones saga.

Wait. That doesn’t sound right. Let’s try that again…

After making over $786 million dollars worldwide, Steven Spielberg has been reportedly working on the next installment in the Indiana Jones saga.

There we go - much better.

On the brighter side, Spielberg said that he has been working with George Lucas on the script and they are looking to bring back Sean Connery for this go round.

I wouldn’t really say that’s too surprising considering Connery has been one of the favorite additions to the Indiana Jones franchise. Second only to Shortround (“No time for love, Dr. Jones!”).

Connery reportedly declined the opportunity to reprise his role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. »

Sean Connery Could Return For Indiana Jones 5

19 September 2009 3:49 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While hardcore fans of the Indiana Jones franchise may have been disappointed by elements of the latest chapter in the Steven Spielberg and George Lucas collaboration, there's no doubt that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a colossal hit. With a production budget of $185 million, Skull became a blockbuster its opening weekend — earning over $100 million — and went on to rake in nearly $790 million worldwide.

Many complained that the franchise had been reduced by the inclusion of aliens into the Indy mythos, while others were simply hoping to see Sean Connery reprise his role as Indy's father, Prof. Henry Jones. Connery's character was initially written into the Skull script, but was removed when the Scottish actor refused to appear again. Though it is implied in the fourth chapter of the Indiana Jones series that Indy's dad has passed away, an insider source is claiming that Spielberg and »

Spielberg Scoop: 'Indiana Jones 5', 'Lincoln' and 'Harvey'

15 September 2009 5:41 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

I can't be the only one getting tired of reading about Steven Spielberg's potential upcoming projects instead of watching the final product(s). Just pick something Stevie and go with it! In the past 24 hours, we've received some updates on three projects the legendary director is (or has been) circling.   Indiana Jones 5 Status Update: Though we haven't specifically heard from Spielberg himself on this project, both Harrison Ford and Karen Allen have piped up recently with regards to the next installment, with Allen saying that she heard the film will hit theaters in 2012 and Ford saying that Spielberg and George Lucas have agreed on a central storyline for the sequel. The Real Deal: I'm not sure I'd believe Karen Allen since they seem to keep her out of the loop until she's...

'Transformers 3' and 'Indiana Jones 5' to 'Lincoln', Spielberg's Name is Everywhere

15 September 2009 2:36 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Steven Spielberg's name was attached to no less than four different films in the past 24 hours ranging from awards fodder such as Harvey and Lincoln to Michael Bay fodder such as Transformers 3, and the nightmare scenario of a potential Indiana Jones 5, even though we all secretly want that one to happen. First off, Peter Bart is reporting at Variety Spielberg is said to be interested in Robert Downey Jr. for the lead role in his Harvey remake. How interested you ask? Well, the word "possibly" is used. Yeah, big stuff! The same article also tells us Spielberg is still hot on making Lincoln despite the fact Robert Redford is moving forward with The Conspirator, the story of Mary Surratt, the alleged conspirator of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Just yesterday it was announced Robin Wright Penn would play Surratt with James McAvoy playing Frederick Aiken, the »

Harrison Ford & Karen Allen Talk Indiana Jones 5

14 September 2009 5:47 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Despite the mixed critical reception for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the film made more than enough money ($786 million worldwide) to warrant immediate talk of a sequel. Up to this point, however, we haven’t heard anything definitive about the movie, besides the usual “we’re working on it” talk.

While in France recently for the Deauville Film Festival, Harrison Ford added to this “maybe yes, maybe no” trend when he spoke with Le Figaro magazine on the possibility of donning the fedora and whip for Indiana Jones 5. According to Ford, it all depends on the script.

“The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form…Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again. »

Harrison Ford and Karen Allen Talk Indy 5

14 September 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Another Indiana Jones film seems inevitable, doesn't it? Do you even want it though? Speaking at the Deauville Film Festival this weekend, where he was given a lifetime contribution award, Harrison Ford revealed what he knew about the upcoming fifth outing for his adventuous alter ego; meanwhile, a video has been posted online showing Karen Allen talking last weekend at Dragon Con and spilling what few beans she had to share. We'll start with Karen's input. This abbreviated video - cut short when the camcorder in use ran out of memory - shows her addressing the Dragon Con crowd. If you don't want to see the whole thing, I'll summarize what I think are the key points allow. So, she thinks that an official announcement has been made and that according to an unnamed friend of hers that heard it, the film will be due in 2012. Hmmm. It seems somebody »

Starman (Blu-Ray Review)

Starman on Blu-Ray

Main Feature (1H 54M 58S)

I am a huge fan of John Carpenter and Jeff Bridges and while I was pretty sure I had seen this movie many years ago I was also confident I had forgotten almost everything about it. Carpenter fails to hit the highs he achieved with other films; the same can be said of Bridges and Karen Allen. At the end of the day, in spite of these small disappointments, you’re left with something quite pleasant.

Starman appears to adopt many elements from previous movies in the sci-fi genre. At various points in the movie we are treated to short bursts of music which bear more than a little resemblance to the wonderful score from Vangelis in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Near the beginning of the movie Allen is shown walking around in a top and panties which reminded me of »

Ask the Flying Monkey! (September 7, 2009)

Q: Do you know if any of the contestants on Survivor: Samoa are going to be Glbt? I just checked out their profiles and at least three of the guys list things like "womanizer", "never been rejected", and "a woman's dream." Is CBS trying to overly heteroize the show that has been strategically won by at least two openly gay men (Todd and Hatch)? – Topher, Toronto, Canada

A: There are no gay male contestants that we know of (although it’s always possible someone hasn’t yet come out to the network).

Is CBS trying to “heteroize” the show? Although I love your coining of a new term, I’d strenuously argue that they’re not. In fact, we recently talked with Jeff Probst, and I’m convinced he doesn’t see the show in those terms at all.

“When you look at the long-term of the show, you hopefully have some diversity, »

Starman - Blu-ray Review

17 August 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Starman is certainly a different film in John Carpenter.s filmography, but a wonderful one as well. It features and intriguing performance from Jeff Bridges, a radiant Karen Allen, and a wonderful storyline. The Voyager II space probe was launched with a message of peace and an invitation to visit Earth for whatever alien life that encountered the probe. When an alien life form takes us up on the invitation, it is shot down by our jets on the orders of Nsa Chief George Fox (Richard Jaeckel). The spaceship crashes in the woods and the alien inhabitant comes upon the cabin of Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). She.s watching some home movies of her late husband. The alien takes »

'District 9' Has Nothing On The Creepy Alien Invasion In 'Batteries Not Included'

14 August 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I haven’t seen "District 9" yet, but you really only need the trailer to get a heaping spoonful of the heebie jeebies. Better yet, check out Neill Blomkamp’s “Alive in Joburg,” the short film “District 9” is based on. It is, in a word, unsettling. As repulsive as the human population’s treatment of the stranded aliens is, you can almost sympathize; they are inhuman, and that otherness coupled with closeness to our homes makes the skin crawl. That much is evident in the "D9" clip below:

It’s a classic trope in sci-fi cinema, alien infiltration. Not invasion mind you, I mean aliens living among us, incognito or otherwise. Here are five classics that did it best. Before "District 9" came along, that is.

Starman Blu-ray Review

10 August 2009 10:47 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Starman (1984) tells the tale, in a vein similar to E.T., of an alien who visits Earth and spends the movie's run time trying to return home. Upon arrival, Starman (Jeff Bridges) befriends a lonely woman, Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen), by taking the form of her deceased husband. Trepidatious at first (who wouldn't be if your dead spouse suddenly reappeared), the widow warms to our visitor as she helps him learn Earth habits and human interaction. But of course the government wants to "study" our friendly extraterrestrial and is quickly in pursuit. This turns the narrative into a road movie with the duo on the run to get Starman home before being captured. Director John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York) was riding high on critical and fan support when he made this film before maligning his career with his 1990's output (Escape from La, Village of the Damned »

The Blu-Ray Review: Starman (1984)

Colin Jacobson reviews the 1980's classic.

After a career based around horror movies, director John Carpenter went down a different path with 1984's Starman. The Voyager II spacecraft sends a message of peace to any potential non-terrestrials who hear it. One of them does, and he takes us up on our invitation.

Babes in Armor: Ten of our favorite action and fantasy movie heroines

20 May 2009 8:55 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

*Note: This post originally ran on May 22nd, 2008

We love our fantasy/sci-fi women ... ladies who can wield a sword or rocket launcher as well as any man, but do it so much more stylishly and, in some cases, in much less clothing! Here are ten women we definitely want on our side in the heat of battle.

Jane Fonda as "Barbarella"

in Barbarella

"Queen of the Galaxy" is a tough moniker to live up to, but if anyone can do it, Barbarella can. She has to deal with murderous children and their killer dolls, horny aliens, a blind (albeit hot) angel, and Anita Pallenberg as an eyepatch wearing assassin who Really wants to get to know her. Best of all, she shows us the proper way to strip in zero gravity, and you can see it Here, in one of the greatest (and mildly Nsfw) openings in film history. »

20 Years of Summer Movies, A Love/Hate Relationship

7 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon, »

Between Dimensions: Starman Still Connects… But With Keanu?

8 April 2009 5:59 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As the winter of ‘09 has refused to depart gracefully, some movie time travel seemed a smart avoidance technique. I found myself stopping in 1984 wondering how well Starman would hold up after a quarter-century. I had vague memories of Jeff Bridges acting but nothing more. I’m pleased to say that Starman remains an excellent film. More surprisingly though, it seems to be what fans were expecting from Keanu, Scott Derrickson, and company in their unsatisfying remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Starman’s premise is classically simple. A UFO is spotted heading for California. This “provocative” flight path encourages the air force to shoot it down. The alien presence survives the crash in Wisconsin. While browsing his new neighborhood, the alien enters a cabin owned by Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). Deep in grief over the recent loss of her husband Scott, she is crying her way through home »
