Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to host Oscars

3 November 2009 12:58 PM, PST | Filmicafe | See recent Filmicafe news »

Oscar organizers on Tuesday named an unlikely pair of hosts for March's Academy Awards, comedian Steve Martin and "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin, a past loser at the world's top film awards. The choice of Martin and Baldwin comes as a mild surprise on the heels of last February's Oscar telecast hosted by song-and-dance man Hugh Jackman. It earned some favorable reviews and higher viewership than the previous year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, had previously hired "Hairspray" director Adam Shankman to co-produce and, based on Jackman's success and Shankman's history making musicals, the betting had been that organizers might aim for another music-oriented telecast. But Martin is known as a stand-up comedian and comic actor, while Baldwin's reputation was built in theater and film dramas like 2003's "The Cooler," which earned him a best supporting actor nomination. »

Schizo Miracles

3 November 2009 5:59 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Samuel Fuller had one of the most fascinating of Hollywood careers -- a 50-plus-year self-mythologizing rampage that began with scriptsmith work in the mid 1930s at the age of 24, evolving into one of the most distinctive auteurs America has ever produced, writing/directing some 25 movies and having a hand in writing 25 more, helplessly manufacturing himself into a crusty man's-man Hollywood gadfly in the process, readily available for manic interviews and iconic appearances in young auteurs' self-conscious films.

There are always corners in his career that you, whomever you are, haven't yet explored (honestly, any single Fuller film remains half-experienced if you've only seen it once), and so the new Sony set of Fulleriania is a prize, beginning as it does with "It Happened in Hollywood" (1937), Fuller's first screenplay credit, and an utterly freakish, Charlie Kaufman-esque launch of meta-ness that centers on Hollywood's discomfiting transition from silents to talkies, barely »

Top 7 Films Directed by Actors Turned Directors

30 October 2009 4:34 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

The old joke is that all actors want to direct.  Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list.  The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors.  This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You.  Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.

7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

Directed by John Cassavetes

Recap: A portrait of family in crisis when a woman (Gena Rowlands) goes mad and her husband (Peter Falk) tries to understand it.

Will Matt Damon's politics cost him at the box-office?

28 October 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

After the trailer for Matt Damon's Green Zone premiered on the Web yesterday, packaged to resemble the next installment of the Bourne franchise, initial feedback to our PopWatch post about it was generally enthusiastic. However, there is also a vocal faction that seems to resent films that have a self-critical political point of view and the actors who espouse them. "This is basically Damon goes to fantasy Iraq and spews his conspiracy theories. Not interested," wrote one commenter. "Wow…yet another 'Blame America' movie from a bunch of actors…none of whom would ever pick up a gun in real life to defend it, »

‘Ong Bak 2: The Beginning’ Review

22 October 2009 6:19 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short version: Ong Bak 2: The Beginning isn’t for everyone, but for action junkies, it provides exactly what you’d expect.

Screen Rant’s Ross Miller reviews Ong Bak 2

The first Ong Bak (subtitled Muay Thai Warrior) I found to be quite entertaining, with some seriously kick-ass fight sequences, consisting of some often jaw-dropping choreography and stunts. Unfortunately, there were also some not-so-great aspects, notably the poor acting and thin storyline. But overall there was enough there to make it worthwhile, and it was pretty much inevitable that another movie would follow.

It’s no surprise to find that Ong Bak 2, or Ong Bak 2: The Beginning, is practically more of the same, but it manages to get rid of (or at least better mask) the bad elements, while subsequently improving on the fight sequences (if you can believe it).

Ong Bak 2 is actually a prequel to Ong Bak, »

1999: A Year In Review (Part One)

7 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #11

4 October 2009 4:04 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This week, after reading over Laremy's list of Top Ten Coen Bros. Films I figured it was about time to watch the four remaining films of theirs I had not yet seen. On top of that I continued my viewing of the new 13 film Paul Newman DVD Collection with a film I loved that ultimately ended up inspiring me to watch another 1958 Newman film. It was a relatively slow week for me, but there's enough to make for a conversation.

As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to have a few more if those of you out there with accounts are interested. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies...

Top 7 Actors playing Athletes in Sports Films

3 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

With Whip It swirling its way into theaters, it’s a wonder no one has fully acknowledged the absolutely amazing athletic work these brave actresses have put into the final product. Let’s face it, not all actors can “bring it” when it comes to believably portraying a real-life athlete.

Truth of the matter is, it’s about as rare a feat as you’re likely to see capably pulled off in Hollywood. Ellen Page (who will more than likely make a later edition of this list) made frantically scuttering around a cylindrical death-track look effortless, even graceful. Hell, the entire cast made roller derby look like the ballet with brute violence. This got me to thinking – Which other Hollywood actors have been the most convincing athletes on the big screen? They deserve their due (to go along with their millions of »

In My Opinion: The Top Ten Coen Bros. Films

30 September 2009 1:49 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Ethan and Joel Coen circa 1990 while promoting Miller's Crossing Top Ten Coen Bros. Films With the upcoming release of A Serious Man, the brand new film from the Coen brothers, I decided to put together my personal top ten list of their films. A task that proved much harder than I would have originally imagined. I agonized over this list. Why? Because love isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about the Coen films. No, something more akin to reverence mixed with a healthy bit of obsessive adoration would be much closer to my relationship with their work. They are the kind are filmmakers who make us think, as we sit in the theater, they are unspooling the yarn just for us. Sure, the Coens weave tales of great violence and isolation, but somewhere in there a quiet grace is achieved too. Places 11, 12 and 13 Photo: Universal Pictures / Touchstone »

Still Finding Love in 'The Shawshank Redemption' 15 Years Later

23 September 2009 12:22 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption

Photo: Warner Bros.

It's odd to say, but when I think about The Shawshank Redemption I think about love. It's a dark tale to be sure; of wrongly convicted men (according to the inmates, the prison is chockfull of them), some nasty prison guards, an even nastier warden, institutionalization, prison rape and most robustly, hope. At its core, however, is this story of friendship. And the one between Red and Andy is one of the great friendships in movie history. It begins formally and specifically and you think you know where it's all going, but it surprises you along the way and before long a saga unfolds. The film spans many years, characters come and go but there is always Red and Andy. Darkness looms over all the characters in Shawshank and much of the movie is about Andy and Red fighting that darkness. »

Jeff Bridges And Coen Brothers Reunite For 'True Grit' Remake

11 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There are plenty of actors I wish would work with the Coen brothers again: Tim Robbins; Nicolas Cage; Beth Grant; William Forsythe; Tony Shalhoub; Philip Seymour Hoffman. Of course, the one that most of us Coen fans want the most is "The Dude" himself, Jeff Bridges. Well we're in luck, because the "Big Lebowski" star is in talks to join Joel and Ethan Coen for their remake of the 1969 comedic western "True Grit," according to Variety.

Based on Charles Portis' novel, the original "True Grit" starred an eye patch-wearing John Wayne as 'Rooster' Cogburn, an aging U.S. marshal who helps a 14-year-old girl find the man who killed her father. Also along for the ride in the original is country singer Glen Campbell, who additionally performed the film's Oscar-nominated theme song. "Grit" is mostly remembered for being the film that finally won Wayne his only Academy Award, which »

The Shawshank Redemption taking to the West End Stage

2 September 2009 4:16 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

There are a few classic films we have come to expect to be amid the top five of many men’s favourite features, among which often sit the usual array of titles – the merits of The Godfather, Scarface, Star Wars and The Matrix having often been discussed over pints and the flipping of burgers on BBQs (we don’t wish to gender-stereotype you understand!) But there is one movie, that isn’t in the vein of these ball-busting action flicks, yet still holds a special place in the hearts of fellas (and plenty of women) the world over, and that’s the weepy tale of brotherhood-bonding The Shawshank Redemption. And we here at Boxwish HQ are very excited to let you know of the stage version’s move from Dublin to our nation’s capital this month. Morning Boxwishers and welcome to what is a very quiet Monday morning on the DVDs front. Y’know how sometimes there are so many new Dvds, you just don’t know which one to choose from? This ain’t one of those days. That’s not to say that what we have, one new DVD and two new Blu-Rays isn’t exciting, it’s just lacking any heavy-hitters, those films that you countdown till they’re available. Instead we have The Lucky Ones, a quirky indie starring lady of the moment Rachel McAdams and, making their Blu-Ray debuts, Angel Heart and La Haine. See, it’s not so bad after all. Sr Pick [Video]: Iron Man 2 Comic-Con Footage Reenactment

3 August 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The top three most talked about movies at Comic-Con were Iron Man 2, Avatar and District 9. In fact, Screen Rant Editor Vic Holtreman wrote an article yesterday talking about the results of a poll we ran on the site to determine which movie people were looking forward to the most from what was shown at Comic-Con. It was no surprise to see Iron Man 2 at the top of the list.

At San Diego Comic-Con two years ago, Jon Favreau brought some ridiculously cool footage of the first Iron Man and blew everyone out of their seats with it. This began the road to success for that film and the franchise. The hope was that he would do the same this year and from what Vic reported on during the Con, he succeeded in that goal (read: Exceeding Fan Expectations).
