What.s the deal with I Love You Phillip Morris? I.m not talking about the fact that it features Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in an awkwardly trite gay relationship, rather that little is being done to get anyone in the Us excited for its March release. It seems to be making more progress abroad. We snagged the film.s obnoxiously cliché international trailer back in July and, just the other day, Jim Carrey Online announced the film.s Japanese trailer website went live. Now, Imp Awards got a hold of the new Russian poster. It shows off Carrey as Steve Russell, family man turned con artist turned jailbird, and his prison sweetheart, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). I don.t know what.s worse, the outfits, the mini pinscher accessories or the fact that both actors are airbrushed to the extreme. Just as almost every Us distributor had no »

Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

I confess, looking back, that I have no great generalizations to make about the movies that came along this decade. Except for this: There were more films of extraordinary and inspiring quality than I can count -- or include on this list. Without any trouble at all, I could easily have compiled a Top 100 list. Yet there's something about that magical arbitrary number 10 that focuses you, disciplines you, forces you to ask yourself what matters. Here, in order of preference, are the movies of the last 10 years that thrilled, moved, delighted, fascinated, and meant the most to this critic. They're »

Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

When David Tennant hands over the keys to the Tardis on New Year's Day it will be the end of the most popular incarnation of Doctor Who of all time.
But there's bad news for new Doctor Matt Smith. In a poll of British TV viewers, more than 21 per cent of respondents put Ewan McGregor as their first choice to take over as the new Time Lord, with Matt Smith coming sixth.
Research commissioned by leading comparison site Gocompare.com reveals that of the 10 Doctors we've seen so far David Tennant is easily the most popular, with over 45 per cent naming him as their favourite.
Tom Baker, who played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981 in his trademark hat and long woolly scarf, was second with nearly 20 per cent of the votes, and Jon Pertwee's 'dandy' Doctor was third with just over 10 per cent. Tom Baker was the most popular Doctor among 36-to-40-year-olds. »

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Seven ridiculous film plots, five unlikely weapons and the five scariest children in film
Seven Ridiculous Film Plots
Physicists could have a quantum field day with the rebooted space opera's loose interpretations of black holes, supernovas, "red matter", etc – but relax, it's only sci-fi! Harder to swallow was the bit when Kirk was exiled to a barren, snowy planet, but luckily landed right outside the cave of Leonard Nimoy. Or the fact that Kirk and Spock could two-handedly overpower a 24th-century Romulan spaceship like it was a 60s Bond movie. Didn't those guys invent security cameras yet?
Ricky Gervais told us this was set in a world where nobody knew how to lie. He lied. In a lie-free world, there'd be no corrupt cops like Ed Norton's. There'd be no corruption. Or secrecy, bribery, exaggeration, artifice, or, in fact, crime. There'd be no cops at all, »

The film stars Ewan McGregor as a professional ghostwriter hired to put on paper the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) living on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the United States. The latest film from the Oscar-winning director, currently under house arrest in Switzerland, will be unveiled alongside Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island
The big star of next year's Berlin international film festival may yet prove to be noticeable by his absence – the new picture by Roman Polanski has been selected to premiere at the event, but the director remains in detention in Switzerland.
Polanski's drama, now called The Ghost Writer, is based on a novel by Robert Harris. It tells the tale of a writer recruited to help a disgraced British prime minister produce his memoirs against the backdrop of a possible indictment at the international criminal court. The film stars Pierce Brosnan as the statesman and Ewan McGregor as his hired author. Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams take supporting roles.

Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" will premiere in competition at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in mid-February reports the trades.
Ewan McGregor plays an author hired to ghostwrite the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan) who discovers a dark secret that puts his life in danger.
Shot in Studio Babelsberg last year, the $35 million film was well into post-production until the director's arrest in Switzerland. Aside from some visual effects, Polanski finished and locked the film whilst incarcerated.
Polanski was released from prison earlier this month but remains under house arrest in Switzerland as he fights extradition to the United States.
Summit Entertainment picked up North American rights to the film last week and plans to release the film in the first half of 2010.
Martin Scorsese’s "Shutter Island" will also premiere in competition at Berlinale following on from its Buttnumbathon premiere in Austin the other day. »

Roman Polanski's latest movie, The Ghost, will premiere at the Berlin film festival in February 2010. The fugitive film director is under house arrest in Switzerland pending the decision of Swiss authorities on whether to extradite him to the Us, where he is wanted on 30-year-old charges. California prosecutors last week called for Polanski to face court in the Us to argue his case for having the charges of unlawful sex with a minor dropped. Polanski, 76, took flight from the Us in 1978 after admitting he had unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl at the house of actor Jack Nicholson, who was away at the time. Star Wars actor Anthony Daniels has admitted that his movie co-star Ewan McGregor was starstruck with his robot character C-3Po. The 63-year-old played the role in all six of the hit sci-fi movies and McGregor was starstruck when he joined the series for the prequel movies. Daniels said: 'I was on the set for the first time, and Ewan came up and said he couldn't believe he was working next to C-3Po. 'It had been a childhood experience for him watching the movies. I wasn't aware that he was such a fan. Then of course, I'm thinking: 'I can't believe I'm working with Ewan McGregor.' 'There was a bit of mutual admiration. It was the same »

What will Summit's big post-"Twilight" film be?
We just heard that the studio bought the rights to controversial director Roman Polanski's new movie, "The Ghost Writer." It's doubtful Mr. P will be making any press trips stateside to promote the film in the Us. He's still under house arrest in France.
Summit will reportedly release the film, an adaptation of "The Ghost" by Robert Harris, stateside in the early 2010.
"The Ghost Writer" is the story of a former British Prime Minister (played by Pierce Brosnan) who is writing his memoirs on a remote island off the eastern coast of the U.S.
When Brosnan's assistant dies, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) arrives to help him finish the book.
Wonder if Ewan will have to take his shirt off -- like Taylor Lautner -- in this Summit film?

As Roman Polanski has bided his time in Switzerland, awaiting either extradition to the United States or an all-clear call, there's been a big question looming over his latest film, a drama about a British Prime Minister that had not yet been completed in the editing room when Polanski was put under house arrest. Now, at least, we know we'll see the film, even if Polanski hasn't finished it yet. Summit Entertainment has announced that they've picked up the rights to the film now titled The Ghost Writer, with plans to release it in the first half of next year. Pierce Brosnan stars as the Prime Minister who calls in a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) to help him finish his memoirs. McGregor's character soon gets caught up in several scandals involving the Prime Minister, from a war crimes trial to sexual dalliances. Rounding out the cast are Olivia Williams, Kim »
