Hollywood obsesses over the younger demographic. If you are between the ages of 18 and 34, you are golden with them. But if you are older, Hollywood doesn’t care as much for your needs. This way of thinking drives ad rates and in theory moves box offices. It is refreshing that director Nancy Meyers does not adhere to this theory. She had a big hit with middle aged love in “Something’s Gotta Give” in 2003 with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Meyers is back at it again with “It’s Complicated”. Her protagonists this time are Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. It is a hit and miss type of affair, but works mainly because of the chemistry between Baldwin and Streep. Baldwin and Streep play a divorced couple of ten years Jake and Jane Adler. Jake is now remarried to his much younger former mistress Agness (Lake Bell). Jane »

Twelve years after Titanic, James Cameron once again has the number one film in America, with his science fiction epic Avatar making more money than all other films in current release combined. Things weren't quite as rosy for the romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans? Here's the top five:
1. Avatar: $73 million
2. The Princess and the Frog: $12.2 million
3. The Blind Side: $10 million
4. Did You Hear About the Morgans?: $7 million
5. The Twilight Saga: New Moon: $4.4 million
We've got three new contenders as we go into the Christmas weekend with two flicks going into wider release.
Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (on Wednesday)
What's It All About: Those furry little CGI crooners are back for more. This time they're entering a singing contest to save their school's music program, though they face stiff competition from a trio of female singing chipmunks.

I’m under thirty, I’m not married, and I’m not a woman. So when speaking with Nancy Meyers about her new movie, It’s Complicated, I felt a bit like an interloper. I had the same feeling when I saw the film at a screening packed with women of a certain age—unlike my neighbors, I didn’t audibly moan at the sight of Meryl Streep tilling her perfect, organic vegetable garden, or cracking the feuilletée crust of a freshly baked chocolate croissant, or walking in on a naked Alec Baldwin. (To be fair, in the latter case, neither did they.) In fact, the only bit I could personally relate to was the sequence when the three get too stoned to function. Still, I found the film to be a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. Kind of like a lazy brunch at Le Pain Quotidien. »

-Two of the stars of "It's Complicated" discussing the delicate art of plastic surgery. The pair (along with co-star Meryl Streep) sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz to discuss the stories behind the making of the new Nancy Meyers-directed film, which opens on Christmas Day. In the film, Streep's character contemplates getting some sort of work done after her husband (played by Baldwin) leaves her for a younger woman. Does she go through with it? Sorry, no spoilers here. With Something’s Gotta Give and the new It’s Complicated, writer-director Nancy Meyers has cornered the market on poorly titled dramedies about revitalized older women finding love after menopause. Both films are shrewdly and even cynically calculated to some extent, aggravated further by Meyers’ habit of backing away from thorny dramatic situations with broad, pandering stabs at crowd-pleasing humor. (It’s Complicated should really be It’s Far Less Complicated Than It Initially Appears To Be, but that wouldn’t solve her title problems.) But say this for Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin: They’re professionals, and »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Looking for a little comic relief over the holidays? If so, look no further than the comedy/romance film It's Complicated (2009), starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. The cast itself makes this movie a sure fire winner that's certain to deliver memorable laughs, and a raised eyebrow or two. The film's plot revolves around three main characters who find themselves caught in an unlikely love triangle. Streep portrays Jane, the mother of three grown children and the owner of a bakery/restaurant. Baldwin plays her philandering ex-husband Jake, now married to a younger woman, and Steve Martin is Adam, an architect Jane hires to remodel her kitchen. Here's where it gets complicated. Jane and Jake meet up out of town for their son's graduation, and decide to have a casual dinner together, only it leads to an all-out affair. Jake, who is still married to the trophy wife »

In "It's Complicated," Jane Adler's husband leaves her after 20 years of marriage for a girl young enough to be their daughter. That's the sort of relationship screw job that will futz with your head. Which might explain how Jane, played by Meryl Streep in a Golden Globe-nominated performance, ends up in the offices of a plastic surgeon for a consultation.
Does she go through with it? No spoilers here. You can find out yourself when the film arrives in theaters on Christmas Day. What you can find out now is the "Complicated" stars' opinions about getting lifted and lipo'd in real life, because we asked them during a recent interview. »

Director Guy Ritchie's talent for stirring violence and barely concealed homoeroticism remain very much on display in "Sherlock Holmes," his first period piece and most flagrant effort to start a new franchise. But for all the film's wit and zing, there's no momentum -- we get a series of stirring, entertaining scenes, but they never add up to a complete story. It's a series of desserts with no main course.
Robert Downey Jr. stars as an eccentric, cerebral Holmes whose fighting style reminds us why some call boxing "the sweet science." (One of Ritchie's coolest moves is to break down the sequence of blows with which Holmes plans to subdue his opponent before the sleuth actually does so.) Holmes' longtime companion... make that bosom buddy... make that close friend, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), is getting married and moving out of their Baker Street digs, but Holmes barely has time to pout, »

Following some first official images, Columbia Pictures has released the first trailer for The Karate Kid (formerly titled The Kung Fu Kid), the remake of the classic ’80s movie. The film stars Jaden Smith (son of megastar, Will Smith) as Dre Parker who, because of work pressure for his single mother, moves to China and soon thereafter comes up against a bully. His misfortune catches the eye of Mr. Han (read: this new version’s Mr. Myagi), played by Jackie Chan. Mr. Han then teaches young Dre karate, presumably in order to defend himself.
There’s been much negative fan reaction to this Karate Kid remake, some people citing Jaden Smith playing the lead role as their problem, others just generally hating the idea of remaking such a classic movie that a lot of people hold dearly from their childhoods (myself included). This trailer starts out alright, but the further it gets into it, »

Happy holidays, everyone! Those willing and able to drag themselves away from the huge pile of swag under the tree can enjoy the late Heath Ledger's final performance, a Jude Law double bill and a drolly comic Romanian police procedural underneath among other holiday presents that await at the multiplex.
"Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel"
With the tagline "Munk Yourself" sounding more like a threat than a come-on, the high-pitched trio of singing rodents return just in time for exhausted moms to plunk the rugrats down at the multiplex after the presents are unwrapped while they snore quietly in the back row. Betty Thomas, who has some kid-themed kid-themed hijinks with on her CV, steps in for the first film's helmer Tim Hill and trades out her experience with real critters on "Dr. Dolittle" for these much less messy (not to mention non-union) digital substitutes. Jason Lee reprises his role as Dave, »

The weekend's sad news concerning Brittany Murphy resulted in a lot of yesterday's content being shunted to today, including this week's Box Office Poll. That scheduling change in no way diminishes that quality of the options available to movie-goers going into the Christmas weekend.
Let's start with "Sherlock Holmes," director Guy Ritchie's action-packed take on the master detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This movie is great, a blockbuster thrill ride that infuses those oh-so-familiar Holmes tropes with Ritchie's instantly recognizable stylistic flair. If you've seen "Avatar" already -- or even if you haven't! -- I highly recommend checking out "Holmes" during the coming holiday weekend.
If you're looking for a less action-packed good time out at the movies this weekend, "It's Complicated" is a perfectly acceptable alternative to "Holmes." It's about a divorced couple who remain friends, and the complications that arise when the ex-wife meets someone new. »

If you smoke even a single marijuana cigarette, the MPAA thinks you're a bad example and should not be viewed by children unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Nancy Meyer's It's Complicated, a romantic comedy starring Meryl Streep as a divorced woman who must decide between two suitors, one of them her architect (Steve Martin) and the other her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin), earned an R rating from the MPAA, despite an appeal by distributor Universal Studios. And it wasn't for profanity or nudity, but for "pot smoking with no bad consequences," according to sources cited by the Los Angeles Times. Total number of joints smoked: one.
When I first read that story, I thought that surely there were other factors involved; the MPAA site shows the rating for "some drug content and sexuality." Well, when I finally saw the film at an advance screening, I kept an »

Alex Zamm (Inspector Gadget 2) will direct Marvin the Martian for Warner Bros..
Along with Zamm, writers Paul Kaplan (TV’s Big Wolf on Campus) and Mark Torgrove have been tapped to write the script.
Marvin the Martian will be a fusion of live-action and CGI animation, similar to 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action, which was dismal failure for the studio.
Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove and Steve Crystal will produce the project.
Production is slated to begin sometime in 2010 with a release in 2011.
Looney Tunes: Back in Action starred Brendan Fraser and Jenna Elfman with appearcens from Heather Locklear, Joan Cusack and Steve Martin. The film earned near $21 million domestically with a budget of $80 million. Ouch.

Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin used a butt double for his new movie It's Complicated. The 51-year-old stars in the flick with Meryl Streep, 60, where they play a divorced couple caught up in a love triangle with another man, played by Steve Martin. The movie's director Nancy Meyers revealed that the bare butt seen in the movie is not Alec's. She told USA Today: 'He said, 'Mine's beautiful. However, I don't want to do that'.' Meyers added that the pair then picked a butt double together to star in the film. Baldwin also told how Streep managed to stay fully-clothed. He said: 'Well, the director is a woman, and she wants to protect her leading »

Yesterday, NPR printed an article about the best and worst movie accents of the decade, asking readers to submit their votes on what actor should nab the award in both categories. As the EW writer who a few years ago helmed our Worst Movie Accents gallery, I decided to look at their choices. (And, unfortunately, since film's all-time worst movie accent -- Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves -- was brought to screens in 1991, it is not eligible for this award.) As far as the best accents go, NPR offers up four: Morgan Freeman in Invictus, Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, »

Avatar, which is the director's first movie since his multiple Oscar winning film, Titanic, was released in 3,452 theaters and averaged $21,147 per theater for a grand total of $73 million over the weekend, well on it's way to earning back its purported $200 million plus budget. Last week's number one film, Disney's animated film The Princess and the Frog fell back one spot this week by only earning $12.2 million. The film, which »
