The announcement that Quentin Tarantino recently starred in a Japanese Softbank commercial has been making headlines [1] around the web this week, and I am still not quite sure why people are making such a big deal out of it. It's no surprise that Qt is somewhat well-versed in Japanese culture and no surprise that he enjoys hamming it up for the camera either. More to the point, I don't think these goofy commercials are quite as detrimental to a celebrity's reputation as it once was believed. After YouTube and websites like Japander [2] spread them across the internet for the whole world to see, and Bill Murray poked fun at the practice in Lost in Translation, it's easy to see why the Hollywood elite shied away for a while. However, lately Japanese commercials seem to be back in vogue, and we are even starting to see domestic ads becoming more acceptable as well. »

Oliver’s Stone’s Natural Born Killers is a movie that, even with its political and social overtones, still stands the test of time. It’s a bravura tour de force motion picture that still pushes the limits of the form to this day. And now, a brand new Uncut Version and Director’s Cut has been released by Warner Home Video, which is sure to delight fans of this controversial motion picture.
An extremely violent satire of modern media that still asks questions 15 years later, the film is a brutal, bloody, surreal and stylized journey along with terrible twosome Mickey and Mallory Knox. Their tri-state killing spree brings questions of the media and its obsession with “celebrity” into focus. Even though this film was created before people like Paris Hilton, or whomever, could be considered a “celebrity” simply by virtue of being on the Internet or videotaping themselves having sex, »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.
The Good
• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. Let's hope »

It was announced last week that "Men in Black 3" has been green lit by Columbia Pictures. Reportedly Barry Sonnenfeld, director of the first two "Mib" films will be at the helm once again, and Etan Cohen, who wrote "Tropic Thunder," is already working on the script. The big grey area...and this is a Big grey area...is if Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will be back in "Black." Clearly, without them, the show can't go on. But to us, there in only one burning question. Will Frank the pug suit up again? Wouldn't be the same without him. »

Man, it seems like ages since the "Men in Black" films were top grossing hits and it really has been years since "Men in Black II" hit theaters. While there's been talk over the years of reviving the franchise, no progress was ever made...until now. According to reports, Columbia Pictures has set "Tropic Thunder" scribe, Ethan Cohen, to write the third installment in the series. At the moment, there are no deals in place for the franchise's stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, however, the film won't likely go forward without the duo's involvement. After all, it wouldn't be "Men in Black" without the original 'men in black'. No production date is known at this time either, but we'll keep you posted.

Back in April we reported on news from the Sony ShoWest presentation that the studio was developing a script for a third Men in Black movie, something which built on the rumors from over a year ago that franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were interested in suiting up for some alien escapades once more. Fast forward to now and an update has come out that Men In Black 3 has found its writer in the form of Tropic Thunder screenwriter, Etan Cohen (not to be confused with one half of the famous Coen brothers, Ethan).
Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures (which Sony owns) has tapped Cohen to pen the script, but beyond that no deals have been made for either Smith or Jones to reprise their roles. Although I’d be very surprised if the studio didn’t have talks going on with the two stars »

When you walk into Natural Born Killers, you wonder what drugs the makers were taking. And maybe for a little bit you might want to partake as well, but it’s probably best to not. Regardless of one’s sobriety whilst watching Natural Born Killers, there is no denying that is both a trip and a ride, which is fair enough as much of it is a road picture. My review after the jump.
The film follows Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis); two kids in love with a taste for murder. The film starts with them running havoc over a diner, and from the get go, Stone gets a great comic sensibility, with the deaths exaggerated to Looney Tunes sensibilities, but like someone who has experienced death up close, he seems unable to romanticize what they’re doing, his director’s eye makes you also feel queasy in partaking. »

If you were one of the people clamoring for more of the Men in Black franchise after the second installment ended, then this article is for you. Why? Well, it seems the studio responsible for the Men in Black movies is also interested in more of them and so, has decided to make at least one more.
The studio has enlisted Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen to pen the script for Men in Black 3 but that’s about as far as things have gone. No deals for franchise stars Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones are in place as yet though, according to the trade, its unlikely that the film would move forward without them.
Sorry to all you Mib fans out there but to me this seems like a longshot. The studio may have a chance at getting Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role, although I think that »

As we've previously discussed, Justin Theroux's career has taken [1] off [2] after writing Tropic Thunder, and the film's other screenwriter Etan Cohen also seems to be similarly in demand. We heard earlier this year that Men in Black 3 was definitely in development [3], but now according to Variety [4], Columbia Pictures have taken the first step toward making it a reality by hiring Cohen to pen the script. Etan Cohen is a former Mike Judge collaborator, having written for Beavis & Butthead and King of the Hill, in addition to co-writing the screenplay for Judge's Idiocracy. He was also working on the currently shelved Will Ferrell/Sacha Baron Cohen Sherlock Holmes comedy, and the upcoming Candy Land board game movie. So, is this a good thing? And will Cohen be able to come up with a script that is strong enough to convince Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to sign on for Mib 3? Let's hope so, »

No super-successful comedy series can stay away for long. Back in April, ShoWest brought news that the aliens were coming back for Men in Black 3. There was no word on which stars would return, or anything other than the faintest murmurings of a plan, but now things are coming together. THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Etan Cohen, the scribe behind Tropic Thunder, will pen the script while director of the first two, Barry Sonnenfeld, returns for the third bout.
With a script and director slotted into place, naturally, the next question revolves around Will Smith. As of now, the actor has no solid plans to return, but buzz says he is interested. As for Tommy Lee Jones -- his involvement is "uncertain." Smith has nothing pressing right now, so he's wide open (save from helping along his son's blossoming career), and Jones has only got two in-development features in his future. »

Despite having no confirmation that either Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones will return for another sequel, Columbia Pictures is pushing forward with Men in Black 3. Variety reports that its studio has hired Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) to write the script.
THR reports that Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed both Men in Black movies, will come back for the third and that Smith is "interested" in possibly returning as well.
The pressure's on Cohen now, who will need to write a script good enough to convince Smith, and hopefully Jones as well, to return to the franchise. Sonnenfeld just needs to make a better movie than Men in Black 2 ... or at least his last effort, the dreadful Rv.

Agent J and Agent K could soon be back on the beat. Sony Pictures is beginning to assemble the pieces for Men in Black 3, per the Hollywood Reporter, having already lined up director Barry Sonnenfeld and screenwriter Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) to dream up a close-encounter scenario reuniting franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The original Men in Black (1997) was a critical and commercial hit, grossing $589 million worldwide and spawning a 2002 sequel that tallied $441 million. If everything stays on target, Men in Black 3 will start shooting in 2010. »

That third Men in Black movie, the one that seemed like a big maybe, the one that seemed like it might be years away, is coming together much faster than we expected. Sony has hired Etan Cohen - and that's not a typo of Ethan Coen - to write the script, and production could begin next spring.
Cohen co-wrote Tropic Thunder, and he'll be writing for director Barry Sonnenfeld, back in the fold after skipping the second movie. In hindsight, I wish I'd done the same thing. Be that as it may, in a time when studios are looking for sure things as often as they can get them, Sony is going back to what works: Of the studio's top five box office hits ever, three are Spider-Man, two are Will Smith. One of those two is the first Mib, and here we are.
However, Smith is apparently not confirmed for the sequel. »

I didn’t fall head over heels in love with Tropic Thunder as many other people did; I found it overlong and Jack Black’s performance sucked all the air out after Robert Downey Jr. would fill it up again. That’s not to say it’s bad. It’s really very good, just not mind-blowing.
One film that was very very bad was Men in Black 2, which rehashed every element of the first Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones vehicle and halved the amount of laughs.
So, the news that Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen (also responsible for the criminally underrated Idiocracy) will be taking over screenwriting duties for Men in Black 3 is definitely good news for the franchise. What isn’t good news is that so far, Smith and Jones haven’t signed deals to return. Maybe it’s time for new actors to fill the MiB shoes, »
