Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock!

1 hour ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Drive-In? Whoop-doo!Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock! The Aughts ushered in a new era of glossy schlock that rose quietly from the ashes of the once burgeoning Drive-In scene. The Drive-In Theater has always stood as a temple for exploitive, low-grade cinema. But by 1999, even the most popular of these late night playgrounds had crumbled to dust. They rose to prominence in the late forties and early fifties, and then experienced a quaint resurgence in the late 70s and early 80s. By the time this decade kicked off to shouts of "Y2K", they had all been wiped clean off the face of the Cineplex landscape. But their aura and mystic still lingered around many a DVD shelf like a ploom of stink bomb smoke. If there's one lasting remnant the Drive-In era gave us, it's the Z-grade flick. Mad Mel Will Be Involved with Mad Max 4 After All. Huh?

5 hours ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A “Mad Max” movie without Mel Gibson just doesn’t sound right, but last we heard George Miller, creator of the franchise, had already cast Brit Tom Hardy to replace the Melster as the hardest rags-wearin’ post-apocalyptic fighter there ever lived. So what’s the deal with this Moviehole report that Mel is not done with the franchise after all? According to the site, who always has their ears plugged in to the Aussie film scene, being Aussies themselves, Mel isn’t quite done with the franchise yet, and in fact his Icon production company will be co-producing the fourth entry. They speculate that this could open the doors for Gibson to either re-appear in the film (in a cameo, perhaps?), or narrate it. Of course, it’s all speculation, but I wouldn’t put it pass Gibson. He’s just nutty enough to do something like that, even while »

Mel Gibson Now Co-Producing 'Mad Max 4'

5 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The last we heard about Mad Max 4: Fury Road, British actor Tom Hardy was the most likely replacement for Mel Gibson. Of course, details about the project are hard to pin down, and Hardy himself said recently he doesn't know if he's been cast or even what role he's up for, which leads to even more speculation about the latest chapter in this story.

Now Moviehole reports that Gibson will be involved in the film at some level, his Icon Entertainment announcing it will co-produce Mad Max 4. That doesn't expressly mean anything other than Mel Gibson is a pretty shrewd businessman, which we already knew, and he recognizes the worldwide interest this project might attract. »

Mel Gibson Co-Producing Mad Max 4, But Will He Star?

8 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

According to Moviehole, actor/director Mel Gibson's production company has announced that it will be producing Mad Max 4. Whether or not that means Gibson will be reprising his iconic role in what is rumored to be a prequel is unsure, but news that he's committed to the flick can only be a good sign.

Mad Max director George Miller says he wants Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the fourth movie. Hardy was previously reported as having won the lead as young Max, but now says that he is yet to get an official offer and that his audition had nothing to do with the lead character.

It's still too early to tell how all of this will shake out, but we can't imagine a Mad Max movie without Mel — even if he's only there to provide flashbacks.

Gibson May Appear In Mad Max After All

8 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Now this is deep speculation based on the tiniest bit of information dropped by Clint over at MovieHole, but Mel Gibson may still show up in Mad Max: Fury Road despite recent announcements that he wouldn.t. The latest news from the Ozploitation remake is that Gibson.s production company, Icon Entertainment, has decided they.d like to co-produce the film. What does this mean for Mad Max? Probably nothing beyond getting a bit more money and representation, but it puts Gibson close to the set in time for shooting. Could we see a cameo from Gibson? Will he be the bad guy? Or, like Clint suggests, will he narrate? Nothing like that has been confirmed, I.m just stretching my rumor muscles. Either way, Mad Max is trucking towards production with Bronson star Tom Hardy in the leading role, and based on his performance there, we.re going »

Mel Gibson Movie Incites Riot At A Mexico Prison

Earlier this month we told you about Gibson.s plan to travel to Mexico.s Gulf coast state to shoot a movie at the facility in January. Veracruz Gov. Fidel Herrera was thrilled to vacate a portion of the prison .because a grand production will be filmed there with our friend, the actor and producer Mel Gibson.. Prisoner relatives did not share his sentiment. As reported by the AP, 300 family members protested the filming holding signs that read .No transfers to make a movie. in fear of their loved ones being transferred making visitation far more difficult. The prison director claims the riot is unfounded. Gerardo Duran explains the upheaval was caused by mere rumors and that no plan to relocate anyone was made. Hopefully someone passes that message »

2009 Celebrity Baby Name Roundup

This was a year that saw fewer attention-seeking antics and more real creativity in celebrity parents’ choice of names. Celebrity parents are growing up and becoming more sophisticated in their taste in baby names, just as they did in their taste for fashion. Oscar gowns used to be gaudy, tasteless get-ups designed for maximum exposure of all kinds; now they’re evidence of real individual style. So too with celebrity baby names, many of which are starting to show genuine refined taste and discernment and seem designed to enhance the child’s life.

Protests Over Gibson's Mexican Movie

30 December 2009 4:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Mel Gibson's new movie is already causing controversy in Mexico - relatives of inmates at a Veracruz jail have blasted plans to move prisoners to make way for the film shoot.

The Hollywood actor-turned-director has set his sights on filming at the Ignacio Allende prison in the eastern coastal city.

Veracruz state governor, Fidel Herrera Beltran, announced earlier this month that prisoners would be moved out of the jail to allow the film crew to work there.

Authorities previously planned to transfer inmates to a new prison in the town next year - but families fear their loved ones will be sent to facilities across the country if the jail is not built in time.

Hundreds of family members launched demonstrations outside the prison on Monday in a bid to stop the transfers until the new unit is ready. The 24-hour protest reportedly came to an end on Tuesday after the prison's director announced he had received no orders to transfer inmates and vowed families would be informed if any prisoners are to be moved.

Gibson previously filmed his 2006 epic Apocalypto in Veracruz and subsequently handed local authorities a $1 million (£690,000) donation to help build new homes for victims of 2005's Hurricane Stan. »

Could this year's Black List of unmade scripts be the picture of Hollywood to come? | Ben Walters

30 December 2009 4:01 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The annual list that picks the best unproduced screenplays making the rounds has in the past turned up scripts that became Juno, The Road and The Invention of Lying

The past year has been a good one for phantom films, those unfinished or never-quite-started projects that form a tantalising shadow history of cinema – witness Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon, the capacious research for which has finally reached daylight in the form of a magisterial Taschen tome, or Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno, the subject of a recent documentary. BBC4's Christmas Welles season, with its focus on the decade or two after Citizen Kane, couldn't help but seem a catalogue of what-ifs and near-misses.

But shadow cinema is not restricted to the archives. Every December, Franklin Leonard of the William Morris agency in Los Angeles releases his Black List, a rundown of the best unproduced screenplays currently doing the rounds in Hollywood. »
