Pierce Brosnan has seen off competition from fellow actors Bruce Willis and Richard Gere to land the title of most popular gay icon over 50 years old.

The former James Bond actor took 33 per cent of the vote, compared with Willis and Gere, who took 25 and 14 per cent respectively, while Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford and Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson scooped fourth and fifth places respectively.

The Queen actress Helen Mirren topped the most popular lesbian icon list with 32 per cent of the poll. Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep claimed second and third places with 28 and 25 per cent respectively, whilst the top five was rounded out by Goldie Hawn and Dolly Parton.

The poll was compiled by online dating agency gay-parship.co.uk.

A commercial starring Richard Gere has landed Italian car firm Fiat in big trouble in China.

Company bosses have apologised to the Chinese government, fearing a nationwide boycott of Fiat cars, after airing the advert, which shows Gere driving from Hollywood to Tibet.

It follows months of protest around the globe over the plight of Tibet in the build up to this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing. The country is attempting to gain autonomy from China, with the help of supporters including Gere.

And although a Fiat spokesperson insists the ad will not be pulled, he has issued an apology: "Fiat ...has recently been advised that certain advertising... could disturb the sensibility of the people within China.

"Fiat Group extends its apologies to the Government of the People's Republic of China and to the Chinese people."

The film centers on the life and career of Amelia Earhart, the famous American pilot who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself. In 1937, she disappeared somewhere over the Pacific during an attempt to fly around the world. Hilary Swank plays the titular character. Ewan McGregor, Richard Gere, Virginia Madsen and Christopher Eccleston co-star.

Former Dr. Who star Christopher Eccleston is set to travel back in time again as aviator Amelia Earhart's final co-pilot.

The British actor will play opposite Hilary Swank, Ewan McGregor and Richard Gere in forthcoming biopic Amelia.

He'll portray Earhart's navigator Fred Noonan, who was with the famous aviator when she disappeared over the Pacific while attempting to circumnavigate the globe in 1937.

The cast keeps growing for Mira Nair’s upcoming biopic “Amelia,” and the latest to board the project is Christopher Eccleston, according to Variety.

The film takes a closer look at the life and career of Amelia Earhart, who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself in 1937. Hilary Swank will play the title character, with Eccleston starring as her navigator.

Also on board are Ewan McGregor, Richard Gere and Virginia Madsen. Eccleston is known for his appearances on “Doctor Who” and “Heroes.” He also recently wrapped filming “G.I. Joe,” in which he will play Destro.

I have to admit the cast is pretty impressive, and I’m excited to see how they will handle this truly fascinating true story. Plus, I would like to see Swank deliver a solid performance again. After “The Reaping” and “P.S. I Love You,” it’s about time.

Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There" (2007) is such a risky, ambitious, passionate conceptual big-brain freak of a movie that, whether you find yourself loving it or hating it or not knowing what in hell to make of it, you can sympathize and even agree with anyone who ends up with the opposite takeaway. Ambivalence is an appropriate response, and one Haynes probably intended, given his subject: Bob Dylan, or, rather, the elusive, chameleonic, deliberately free-associative nature of Dylan's public personality, and the idealized and sometimes ridiculous ways we've conceived it for ourselves, and hence the absurdity of pop culture celebrity in general. A lot of abstracted meat and potatoes for one film to tackle, and Haynes, easily the most theoretical and analytical indie filmmaker at work today, goes for the gusto, crafting a weave-movie made of strands that only occasionally cross each other's dreamscapes and more often launch out into the ether.

Latest: Late author Norman Mailer enjoyed sexual roleplay, according to his former mistress Carole Mallory.

The couple dated from 1983 to 1992 during Mailer's marriage to his sixth wife Norris Church.

Their sex life was exposed last month when Harvard University bought a stack of love letters the pair wrote to one another.

Now former model Mallory has spoken out to reveal exactly what Pulitzer Prize-winning Mailer's X-rated tastes included.

She says, "(Mailer) liked me to play dress up in erotic outfits, and we'd roleplay. He particularly liked to play the role of producer. The scene would be the casting couch."

Mallory, who boasts having bedded stars including Warren Beatty, Rod Stewart, Robert De Niro and Richard Gere, also claims Mailer was obsessed with details of her sexual past.

She adds, "He liked to hear the details of the sexual behaviour of stars with whom I'd had sex.

"Norman was turned on by hearing about my sexual encounters with movie stars... hearing about my sexcapades gave him great pleasure."

Mailer died last November, aged 84.

Movie star Robert Duvall has sold his House of Jasmines hotel in Argentina.

The actor and his wife Luciana ran the boutique retreat in Salta, and welcomed celebrity guests like Brad Pitt and Richard Gere to the hotel, which sits in the foothills of the Andes.

Details of why the Duvalls sold the 120-year-old ranch building and for what price have not been disclosed.

Richard Gere has signed up to join Hilary Swank in the much-delayed Amelia Earhart biopic.

Aussie director Philip Noyce quit the project at Christmas, due to ongoing filming delays and has been replaced by Mira Nair.

Now, with Gere on board, the flying film, titled Amelia, will take off later this month, when shooting begins in Canada and South Africa.

Double Oscar winner Swank will play the fabled aviator and Gere will portray her publisher husband George Putnam.

Richard Gere's upstate New York restaurant has landed him in a row with wealthy locals and town officials, who are demanding he tears down a fence they claim spoils their view.

The actor recently opened the Bedford Post Inn, in the town of Bedford, which is 45 miles (72 kilometres) north of New York City, and where Martha Stewart, Ralph Lauren and Glenn Close all own homes.

After neighbours complained about the 'eyesore' parking lot, Gere and business partner Russell Hernandez erected a 18 foot long (5.5 metres), five foot high (1.5 metres) cedar fence.

Now local officials have stepped in to insist it is taken down, claiming it breaches local planning rules and looks worse than the parking lot.

Hazel Nourse, the head of the town's zoning board, tells the New York Daily News, "It's a lovely building, but the fence sticks out like a sore thumb."

Gere and Hernandez have agreed to keep the town happy, with the latter insisting, "If they say you have to have a four-foot fence, then that's what we'll do."

Richard Gere has been cleared of charges of obscene behaviour after a lawsuit relating to a 2007 incident in India was thrown out of the country's Supreme Court.

A court in the western state of Rajasthan, India, issued a warrant for Gere's arrest last year after he passionately embraced Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty and kissed her several times at an April Aids awareness event in New Delhi.

Displays of public affection are outlawed in the conservative country.

Prosecutors also wanted Shetty to appear in court over charges that she did not resist the actor's advances, but they were later suspended by the Supreme Court.

Gere initially dismissed the row as "nothing", but later apologised for causing any offence.

And now a two-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, Kg Balakrishnan has quashed the case following an appeal by Gere's lawyers, branding the charges "frivolous" and "cheap publicity".

Balakrishnan says, "Richard Gere is free to enter the country. This is the end of the matter."

He also blamed the complainants for bringing "a bad name to the country".
