Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

James Cameron's Avatar has shot to top of the U.K. box office, with the computer generated epic raking in $13.6 million (£8.5 million) in its opening weekend (19-20Dec09).
The groundbreaking sci-fi movie has scored the third biggest opening in Britain and Ireland of 2009 after The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The weekend's (19-20Dec09) second spot was claimed by St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold with $2.5 million (£1.6 million), followed by Jim Carrey's animated tale A Christmas Carol in third place with £1.6 million (£1 million).
Nativity! and Planet 51 round out the top five, pulling in revenues of $924,000 (£578,000) and $721,000 (£451,000) respectively. »

Actual box-office receipts for Avatar turned out to be bigger than the studio's original estimates but not as big as the first revision on Monday, which would have made it the top-grossing December movie ever. And while the film's $77.03-million take -- the final figure -- overshadowed the first-weekend gross of any other James Cameron movie, including Titanic, it fell short of some of the biggest summer blockbusters -- most especially last year's The Dark Knight, which holds the opening-weekend record with $158 million. Overseas, the film collected $159 million, to bring its worldwide total to $236 million -- far short of the $394 million amassed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last July. Still, no one was complaining. The general consensus was that the film would certainly recoup its production and marketing costs, which some reports have estimated could come to nearly $500 million. The real test of the film's potential could come during the next few weeks when analysts will be able to appraise its repeat business, the crucial factor in the success of Cameron's Titanic. It appeared that the film could face some serious competition quickly from the musical Nine, which collected $257,232 in just four theaters over the weekend -- or an average of $64,308 per theater. When it expands on Christmas Day, it will only be shown in about 1,500 theaters, compared with the 3,452 showing Avatar. Overall, the box office stood up quite nicely to the storms that hit the East Coast. The top twelve films collected $129.83 million, up 60.84 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago when Jim Carrey's Yes Man topped the list. As of Sunday, the box office was just $4 million short of hitting the $10 billion mark for the year and likely hit that figure on Monday. Revenue for the year is up 8.84 percent over last year while attendance is up 4.76 percent.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):
1. Avatar, 20th Century Fox, $77,025,481, (New); 2. The Princess and the Frog, Disney, $12,185,949, 2 Wks. ($44,717,721); 3. The Blind Side, Warner Bros., $10,021,280, 5 Wks. ($164,725,525); 4. Did You Hear About the Morgans?, Sony, $6,616,571, (New); 5. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Summit, $4,407,598, 5 Wks. ($274,598,319); 6. Invictus, Warner Bros., $4,203,171, 2 Wks. ($15,877,956); 7. Disney's A Christmas Carol, Disney, $3,443,464, 6 Wks. ($130,813,354); 8. Up in the Air, Paramount, $3,210,132, 3 Wks. ($8,216,,051); 9. Brothers, Lionsgate, $2,889,121, 3 Wks. ($22,349,862); 10. Old Dogs, Disney, $2,340,575, 4 Wks. ($43,625,471). »

Avatar might be blue, but it sees green; Wild Hogs 2 runs out of gas; Bruce Willis sees Red in October; Steven Spielberg saddles up a War Horse and Segal joins a Neighborhood Watch.
Box Office
We all knew that it was going to happen – James Cameron’s Avatar snagged the top spot at the box office and banked a heavy $73 million. The gross is impressive considering that the weather in North America was terrible over the weekend. Factoring in foreign grosses the film has now scored over $232 million – if the legs are good, this could be Cameron’s second billion dollar grosser.
The Princess and the Frog had to settle for the runner-up spot. The film dipped just under 50% for a $12.5 million total. The total gross for the Disney film is now $44 million, with $100 million still an option.
America’s Sweetheart Sandra Bullock was in the third spot with The Blind Side. »

William Baldwin, who voices Batman in the upcoming animated Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, let an interesting bit of old casting news slip when discussing his new project with Figures.com. "I was one of Joel Schumacher's top choices when Val Kilmer wound up playing Batman," says Baldwin. "Tim Burton and Michael Keaton had left, so Joel had the luxury of replacing Michael Keaton, and he told me that his four choices, which was an eclectic, diverse array, were Daniel Day-Lewis, Ralph Feinnes, Val Kilmer, and me."
I can't imagine many scenarios where "Billy" Baldwin and Daniel Day-Lewis would be up for the same part, but this Batman Forever casting short list sort of blows my mind. I get giddy with the thought of seeing young Ralph Fiennes as debonair Bruce Wayne or Day-Lewis displaying his own brand of steel-jawed intensity behind the cape and cowl.

We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade. Obviously we can’t cover absolutely everything, but sticking true to our core movie genres on the site, we’re just going to concentrate on the comic-book, sci-fi, action (and so forth) types of movies and take a look at what films had the maximum impact over this decade.
It’s amazing to think that it’s been 10 years since movies like The Matrix, American Beauty and Fight Club (to name but a few) came out in 1999 (check out our 1999 decade highlight, if you haven’t already). A Lot of movies – somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000-6,000 – have been released since then. We’ve had the good, the bad and »

British actor David Tennant has dismissed rumours he has been in secret talks to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie.
The Doctor Who star, who quit the cult U.K. sci-fi series to pursue a career in Hollywood, was recently hit with a slew of rumours linking him to the next installment in the caped crusader franchise.
The Scot has previously spoken out about his desire to play the fiendish villian, portrayed by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever, and was recently rumoured to have had his wish granted by movie bosses.
But although Tennant would still love to take on the role, he has dismissed speculation that he is in negotiations to join the cast of a sequel to 2008's The Dark Knight.
He says, "I probably should be (The Riddler). But you'd think my agent would have mentioned something if it was true." »

After months of breathless buzz, speculation, and doubt, James Cameron's Avatar finally arrived in movie theaters nationwide, and its box office prognosis definitely isn't blue. The 3-D sci-fi epic landed at number one with an estimated $73 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office. The number is certainly on the lower end of expectations for the long-anticipated film, but considering that much of the east coast was buried under record snowfall for most of the weekend, it remains an unambiguously solid opening -- the best 3-D debut ever and the second-best December debut behind I Am Legend. Also unambiguous: The film's rock-solid "A" CinemaScore rating, »

Here's an interesting pick for the Alphabet network.
ABC has ordered a pilot for British humorist Danny Wallace's upcoming book, Awkward Situations for Men, the story of his and his wife's journey through America as a British man trying to adjust to the American way of life.
It's an interesting choice because it's new territory for ABC and American television in general. Wallace mines humor in his books and shows from setting himself up in strange situations such as hunting down old childhood friends, challenging fellow humorist Dave Gorman to find as many people named Dave Gorman as possible and saying "yes" to every question for six months, the latter of which was remade into a movie starring Jim Carrey.
Think this will work in the states and if so, will see more of them?

Danny Wallace is a funny guy. You probably don't recognize the name, but you'll probably know some of his work.
Still drawing a blank? Well, Wallace's book Yes Man served as the inspiration for last year's Jim Carrey flick of the same name. As it turns out, Yes Man was a memoir — Wallace actually said 'yes' to everything for a year, causing all sorts of misadventures, and actually had a positive influence on Wallace's life.
Now, Wallace is coming to ABC. A pilot order for Wallace's new 'hybrid comedy,' Awkward Situations for Men, has been handed out by the network. The script, which is co-penned by Jeff and Jackie Filgo (That 70's Show) along with Wallace, revolves around Wallace and his wife crossing over the Atlantic from Britain. However, once here, Wallace realizes that his behavior is not consistent with American behavior, causing himself great embarassment and humorous situations. »

It’s not as if it had a lot of competition, but it’s still pretty amazing that in its sixth week of release, A Christmas Carol dropped only seven percent... and that was enough to put it at the top of the ranking, earning almost twice as much as its nearest competitor. So far, Carol has earned more than £16 million in the U.K., which is way better, relatively speaking, than the $124 million it’s taken in in North America so far. If British audiences aren’t connecting with Where the Wild Things Are, just as North American ones did not, it look like they’re not so crazy about Paranormal Activity, either, despite how well it performed at home. That 59 percent dropoff is gonna be a lot worse next week, probably, particularly with Avatar likely to eat into its target demo. Actually, the Cameron flick will likely deliver a big hit to Carol, »
