'2012' Sweeps The Globe In The Sunday Box Office Report

38 minutes ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

1. "2012" ($65 million)

2. "A Christmas Carol" ($22.3 million)

3. "The Men Who Stare At Goats" ($6.2 million)

4. "Precious: Based On The Novel 'Push' By Sapphire" ($6.1 million)

5. "Michael Jackson's This Is It" ($5.1 million)

The world may have ended in "2012," but Roland Emmerich's disaster epic is just getting started at the box office. The John Cusack-starring film finished its opening weekend in theaters in first place with a walloping $65 million domestic intake. But moviegoers beyond American borders came out in full force for the end-of-days flick, giving "2012" a massive $225 million total worldwide.

Emmerich's film cost a hefty penny to produce, of course, and while the global total for "2012" is sure to help things along, there is still work to be done should Sony want to see a significant profit on their product — a task made all the more difficult by the impending release of some small film about shirtless vampires and werewolves. Nonetheless, Sony can »

2012 fireworks at the box office

1 hour ago | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The verdict is in and Roland Emmerich's it's-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-again 2012 has found its audience. Theater patrons interested in seeing apocalyptic spectacle strode up to the ticket booth and rung up $65 million dollars worth of box office for 2012. That's the second-best ever opening for one of Emmerich's films, about $3 million behind 2004's The Day After Tomorrow.

The big debut for 2012 marks the financial start of the holiday movie season. Last week's champ, Jim Carrey's motion captured Scrooge in Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol, opened with just $30 million. However, this week it only tumbled to second spot and added another $22m to its total accumulation of $63.2m. The picture will make its investors its money back, it'll just take longer and that's fine. Let's not forget that the movie is about Ebezener Scrooge and we've got another five weeks of Christmas hype to get through, the perfect advertising campaign for a holiday movie. »

Box Office: Disaster Porn Rules the Planet

1 hour ago | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Who says there’s no profit in blowing up the world a billion times over? Don’t tell Roland Emmerich that. The German director has blown up, imperiled, or invaded the Planet Earth at least a half dozen times in his career, and his latest, the mother of all disaster epics “2012″ crashed, demolished, and mass murdered the global population on its way to a $65 million box office debut. Set in the year 2012, when it is believed that the Mayan Calender will predict the end of the world, the film stars John Cusack as an Everyman turned superhero who somehow always manages to survive one mega disaster after another. Danny Glover plays the President who is, no doubt, too old for this shit. Last week’s #1, the Jim Carrey animated “A Christmas Carol” humbugged its way to second place with another $22 million, giving it a two-week total of $63 million. Considering the film’s $200 million price tag, »

Emmerich's disaster epic 2012 opens with a massive $65 million.

9 hours ago | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Love his films or loath them, Roland Emmerich is the master of disaster with "2012" bringing in a gargantuan $65 million in U.S. sales on its debut weekend. Worldwide, the film starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrselson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Oliver Platt has already brought in over $225 million. This one's going to be big folks and clearly a year for Sony after the success of "District 9" and "Zombieland" among others. Doing well in its sophomore weekend, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures' "A Christmas Carol" sang up 14% of the weekend gross with $22.3 million added, making the animated film's total over $63 million so far. JIm Carrey, Gary Oldman, Crispin Glover and Robin Wright Penn star in the Robert Zemeckis-directed and adapted family animated adventure. Interview – Troy Duffy, Chris Brinker, and Sean Patrick Flanery of The Boondock Saints II

13 November 2009 5:19 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Like many, I came to know and love The Boondock Saints through DVD (and now Blu-ray.) Browsing through my local DVD retailer, I checked out their new releases and saw the film for a reasonable price. This was also at a time I had decided I wanted to be a filmmaker so I was interested in seeing obscure, off-beat films. So I purchased the flick, went home, and was instantly assaulted by all of it’s awesome. From the unrelenting action to Willem Dafoe’s outlandish performance, I was thoroughly entertained by what Troy Duffy had delivered and eagerly anticipated the sequel, which by this point in time was still rumored.

Well here we are, ten years after the first film debuted and The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is upon us. While it’s been playing New York and L.A., everyone else gets it this weekend. When »

Jim Carrey's superb site

13 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Exploring the official site of Jim Carrey is an authentic and fascinating adventure. Many stars have realized having their own official site is good PR, but not all do more than make a home page and add some superficial content. Some even manage to turn off the casual browser with websites that aren't up to date, are badly designed and whose content look more like an online CV than anything else. The sites of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher Lambert are especially "good" examples of this. Jim Carrey, however, is an exception: his personal site is a pure marvel where users can spend hours going on a fascinating voyage through his life and work in an atmosphere reminiscent of the movies of Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. Click on the link to enter the magnificently odd world of Jim Carr... »

Viennale 2009: Not Just Another Fest in the Crowd

I. Festivals And Ideology

"I cannot tell a lie," writes Jonathan Rosenbaum in the catalogue introduction to the retrospective on American film comedy he curated for this year's Viennale (in collaboration with the Austrian Filmmuseum), "the initial concept and impulse for this series weren’t my own." A paragraph later, he goes on to explain, "[...] both the selection of the films and the preparation of this catalogue [...] came only after I overcame a certain amount of resistance." And as if he weren't transparent enough, Rosenbaum adds, "I was tempted by [the Viennale and Filmmuseum directors' joint proposal], but various roadblocks stood in the way, most of them either logistical or ideological." One of these roadblocks, "a reluctance to restrict [himself] to 'American cinema' after living through eight years of American separatism and exceptionalism as propounded and promulgated by the administration of George W. Bush," is not much of an ideological leap for those familiar with Rosenbaum. »

Box-office preview: How much destruction with '2012' cause at the box office?

The master of disaster Roland Emmerich is back and this time nothing's sacred. Will his over-the-top spectacle -- blowing up Vegas, India and Rome among other locales -- be the cure-all for moviegoers this weekend? Sony Pictures seems to think so. The PG-13-rated actioner starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet will bow in some 3,000 locations. The only thing that could hold back the weekend results on this film is the long runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes. Would Jim Carrey Rather Be Starring in Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland"?

11 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

His Disney-fied A Christmas Carol may have opened to big bucks last weekend, but it seems like Jim Carrey might be angling for roles more akin to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. His new site, jimcarrey.com was submerged in a flood of clicks late last week as fans and haters spouted off about the creepy-beautiful experience that's as visually bizarre as a Magritte painting and as flat-out weird as Monty Python.

The site is the brainchild of 65 Media, and although they'd worked on sites for Carrey films like the The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this one was different from the beginning, says founder and Cco Albin Reif. "In this case we were going into the mind of the genius." 65 Media presented Carrey with several concepts, one of them being this visually-driven idea that instantly resonated with Carrey. Dane Cook for The Riddler in Batman 3?

11 November 2009 1:41 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's still unclear whether director Christopher Nolan will be returning for a third chapter in the Batman revamp, let alone what villain(s) will square off against the Dark Knight. Still, there have been rumors for months now that The Riddler will make a return appearance some fifteen years after Jim Carrey portrayed the character in Batman Forever.

Everyone from Eddie Murphy, to Johnny Depp to Curb Your Enthusiasm funnyman Larry David have been mentioned in connection to the roll of Edward Nigma, the villain who compulsively confesses to his crimes in riddle form. So when MTV recently sat down with actor and comedian Dane Cook (My Best Friend's Girl), they asked him if he would be interested in the part.

If they brought back The Riddler — a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker — that would be badass. I would do that.

'Riddle Me This', Dane Cook Says

10 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

If the next Batman movie ends up featuring a certain puzzle-loving villain, actor/comedian Dane Cook wants in on the role.

According to MTV, the Good Luck Chuck star was recently asked if there were comic book movie characters he would like to play, to which he replied, "I love the new Dark Knight series and Batman Begins. If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that."

The Riddler, a genius-level intellect frequently motivated by the challenge of outsmarting Batman, was previously played by Jim Carrey in the 1995 Batman Forever. Admittedly, Carrey’s manic shtick got old really fast, but at least Cook seems to realize that any Bat-villain must convey a sense of menace, not just dress up in flashy tights laden with question marks.
