Drawing on Your Nightmares: Nihilism and Horror

10 December 2009 6:22 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I’m sorry to have gone delinquent on my posts here, because this has been a crazy year for me and horror. My Solomon Kane series "The Castle of the Devil" was well received, and I pushed that adventure story about as far as I could, with the help of Mario Guevara’s macabre visuals. I made it to Crypticon in Seattle and met Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Atkins, toured the sites where the Green River Killer’s victims were found, and read and watched as much horror as I could get my hands on.

As my previous posts show, I’m a little old-fashioned, though not completely retro. I’m writing this while watching The Ring (in this case I buy American) and dying to see the final episode of "Dexter" season four this weekend, and the last comic I read was the new issue of Hack/Slash from »

A Conversation with Captain Howdy: The Fangoria Interview with Eileen Dietz

28 November 2009 7:01 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

With vast experience on stage and screen (big and small), Eileen Dietz' career has woven a path in-and-out of the horror genre. While horror fans will no doubt associate the actress with her role as the face of evil in William Friedkin's Oscar-winning 1973 film The Exorcist, Dietz has many stories to tell. Fangoria's Australian correspondent Lee Gambin recently sat down for a one-on-one interview to discuss her career and craft.

Lee Gambin/Fangoria: What were some of your very first jobs in the entertainment industry, as I understand you started super young and how did the Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre School benefit you as a young actress?

Eileen Dietz: I worked at a Summer Stock company in Kalamazoo Michigan. It was a very bad place and the director of the theatre only brought me up there to rob me of my innocence if you know what I mean. »

31 October 2009 1:31 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The first-ever Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors has officially taken over the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, becoming The Place you want to spend your Halloween! Its 1:31am Vegas time as I type this and the party is continuing downstairs as Halloween has officially arrived in the city of Sin.

Opening night was a blast here, packed with film screenings, celebrity guests (including some unannounced surprises), horror, freaks, and rock. And to top it off, we're broadcasting the demonic debauchery Live!

Check out this clip from last night's Live webcast featuring John Kassir doing a little bit of The Crypt Keeper!

As the final screening of the night comes to a close with Black Devil Doll wrapping up in the Brenden Theatres, we're already prepping for the show floor to re-open at 10am. Tickets will be available at the door for only $20 beginning at 8:30am, and here's what horrors lie in-store for Halloween. »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

Oh My Grey’s! Merger Madness Plagues Seattle Grace

2 October 2009 6:36 AM, PDT | People.com - TV Watch | See recent People.com - TV Watch news »

Still reeling from the Chief's announcement about the merger last week, the entire staff of Seattle Grace doesn't feel safe and is going to great, and often misguided, lengths to secure jobs. Their misfortune is a treasure chest of quality Omg moments for fans. Child's Play: Yang feigned interest in pediatrics because Arizona's "merger-proof. She keeps little kids alive. No one likes a dead kid." She immediately found herself immersed in her own personal hell of bear lapel pins, funny voices, games and fetching pudding (the last of which she ate instead of giving it to her patient). She begged Owen to tell the Chief he needed her. "I need to be on the stays list. That list is my future, my salvation. The list is life." Only Yang would feel justified in quoting Schindler's List in this moment. She also requested Meredith use her "dead mommy connections to get answers. »

Dexter: Season Four Premiere (TV Review)

25 September 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

I can’t believe they killed Julie Benz!!! I can’t believe they knocked off the former Angel actress, who plays Rita Bennett, in “Living the Dream,” the fourth-season premiere of the hit Showtime series Dexter. Talk about jolting your viewers! This ranks right up there in TV shockers with J.R. being shot, Henry Blake dying on M*A*S*H and David Faustino exiting the cast of Married…With Children. Wait…sorry. That last one isn’t true. And neither is the first one.

Rita is alive and well and still married to Dexter (Michael C. Hall) at the end of “Living the Dream” (which debuts this Sunday at 9 p.m.). But I fibbed for a reason—actually two, and one of them isn’t ’cause I wanted to be a misleading jackass. First and foremost, I wanted an opening line that grabbed people’s attention. And secondly, »

Dick Durock, who played the Swamp Thing in Swamp Thing (1982), The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) and Swamp Thing the TV series from the early '90s, died in Oak Park, CA last week at age 72. The six-foot-fiver from South Bend Indiana was a former Marine who found regular work as a Hollywood stuntman and working actor, but it was his role as mossy beast to Adrienne Barbeau's beauty for which he'll be most remembered. As for Mr. Thing, he lives on -- Akiva Goldsman is adapting Alan Moore's reimagining for the big screen. »

Matt Molgaard/Fangoria: A lot of people are labeling you the next big scream queen. How does that feel?

Brooke Lewis: That’s insane! Seriously, I grew up loving horror. All the seasoned horror actresses like Adrienne Barbeau and Dee Wallace, Brinke Stevens and Karen Black you know, they were people I loved growing up. There’s so many amazing scream queens out there, »

Late Golden Girls star Bea Arthur was the toast of Broadway on Monday night when stars came out to honour the beloved actress.

Rosie O'Donnell, funnyman Jerry Stiller and Arthur's TV co-stars Rue McClanahan and Adrienne Barbeau joined host Angela Lansbury in paying tribute to the star at the Majestic Theatre.

Bea Arthur Remembered at R-Rated Tribute

15 September 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Golden, indeed: Heavyweights from the stage and TV gathered at Broadway's Majestic Theatre Monday to pay tribute to the late Beatrice Arthur, mixing tears with loud laughs - and ribald recollections that would have been bleeped had the 2½ ceremony been broadcast on TV. Instead, speaking live before a near-capacity house, Rue McClanahan told of the time her Golden Girls costar opened in her own 2002 one-woman Broadway show and graciously invited McClanahan and her husband, Morrow Wilson, to the opening-night performance and party afterwards. Admitting Arthur - who died of cancer in April, at 86 - often wasn't at her best when she was drinking, »

The 10 Sexiest Scream Queens

10 September 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

One of the things I love best about the internet is that people post movie-related lists and then other people get to comment on all the things the lists did wrong (or, sometimes, did right). Today, in anticipation of this week's Sorority Row, Moviefone posted a list of the ten sexiest scream queens. It's a fun list, and it's wise enough to go all the way back to Fay Wray (King Kong) and Janet Leigh (Psycho), and it includes two essentials: Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). It also includes Shannon Elizabeth, a dubious choice for films like Jack Frost, 13 Ghosts and Cursed (although I'm glad someone has thrown Cursed back into the ring; it's silly but it's also sexy, well-acted and very sharply directed by Wes Craven).

I like Adrienne Barbeau as a choice, too, even though she's really only a "scream queen" in one movie, »

Comics of the 1950s--which also provided the title and inspiration for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series--director George Romero and screenwriter Stephen King serve up five delightfully frightful stories. Utilizing comic-book panels, animated segues, and exaggerated lighting and camera angles, Romero and cinematographer Michael Gornick come very close to replicating a horror comic in film format. Maude: Angela Lansbury Hosting Tribute to Friend Bea Arthur

3 September 2009 6:03 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

While theatre-goers knew Bea Arthur for her work in Mame, Fiddler on the Rood, and Bea Arthur on Broadway, those of us who love television will always remember the actress for her roles on shows like All in the Family, Maude, and The Golden Girls.

Arthur, who died in April, was indeed a veteran of both stage and television. Those two worlds will come together later this month for a special tribute to the Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress. Longtime friend and Mame co-star Angela Lansbury will host the event.

Among those either performing or offering remembrances will be Norman Lear (creator of All in the Family and Maude), Adrienne Barbeau (Maude), Rue McClanahan (The Golden Girls), Zoe Caldwell, Chita Rivera, and Billy Goldenberg, Arthur's longtime accompanist.

Greatest Scream Queens

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, »
