Unconventional, Odd and Peculiar movies
Just odd movies that most of the time don't follow the conventional way of storytelling, character development and cinematography. Some are peculiar in a good way, breaking the mold and telling different but interesting stories, others are simply odd and confusing and help the story very little

- DirectorJim JarmuschStarsBill MurrayAdam DriverTilda SwintonTwo pioneers fight for their lives and their love on the American frontier during the Civil War.ODD: I didn't get it. Really. I expected a zombie apocalyptic comedy and instead the way it's written and the performances look like it was a studio or indie film. The fourth wall breaking takes you out of the experience entirely.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRichard DreyfussFrançois TruffautTeri GarrRoy Neary, an Indiana electric lineman, finds his quiet and ordinary daily life turned upside down after a close encounter with a UFO, spurring him to an obsessed cross-country quest for answers as a momentous event approaches.ODD: Being a Spielberg movie about a serious take on aliens that come to earth (being E.T. his kid-friendly approach). This movie was surprisingly uneventful with a lot of build up to such a little pay off. The characters lacked personality and were merely vessels through which to experience the unfolding events.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeSarah SnookNoah TaylorAs his last assignment, a temporal agent is tasked to travel back in time and prevent a bomb attack in New York in 1975. The hunt, however, turns out to be beyond the bounds of possibility.PECULIAR: Incredibly creative and daring but unfortunately the moment you try to understand everything that happened your mind explodes. You understand the messages of the movie and the important parts, but questioning the how will only drive you mad.
- DirectorJared HessStarsJon HederEfren RamirezJon GriesA listless and alienated teenager decides to help his new friend win the class presidency in their small western high school, while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home.PECULIAR AND ODD: It has a particular and peculiar Wes Anderson-inspired sort of dry humor that it's not for everyone. The movie is absurd and reminisces more of a 90s cartoon like "Beavis y Butt-Head" instead of a teen movie. It's definitely unique but odd.
- DirectorTerry ZwigoffStarsSteve BuscemiThora BirchScarlett JohanssonTwo eccentric best friends graduate high school and respond to a man's romance-seeking newspaper ad as a gag, only to find their lives becoming increasingly complicated.PECULIAR: the plots and subplots are relatable but it is by no means a conventional storytelling way. It leaves a lot of room for the audience to think about what's going on in the leads head but it makes use of the show don't tell rule to the letter.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsJared GilmanKara HaywardBruce WillisTwo 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. While people set out on a search mission, a violent storm approaching them catches their attention.PECULIAR: I consider "peculiar" movies these sort of films. THe execution is odd and unconventional but as you watch you know what's going on and you feel for the characters and story that it's telling. It has a very peculiar cinematography and set and costume design that only makes it more unique.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJason LondonWiley WigginsMatthew McConaugheyThe adventures of high school and junior high students on the last day of school in May 1976.PECULIAR: only because there's no big plot going on, just a bunch of subplots and short events some interrelated others not. Just a portrayal of a night out in 1970s. But that's what makes it so genuine, in life sometimes nothing really big happens. Nevertheless, this movie is super quotable thanks to its engaging characters
- DirectorLuc BessonStarsJean RenoGary OldmanNatalie Portman12-year-old Mathilda is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. An unusual relationship forms as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade.PECULIAR: it does follow a conventional story but there are some interesting cinematography and there are unlikely romances. But it speaks so much and the ending is fantastic.
- DirectorKirk JonesStarsEmma ThompsonColin FirthAngela LansburyA governess uses magic to rein in the behavior of seven ne'er-do-well children in her charge.
- DirectorAdam ElliotStarsToni CollettePhilip Seymour HoffmanEric BanaIn 1976 Melbourne, a lonely 8-year-old girl strikes up a correspondence with an unlikely pen pal: a severely obese 44-year-old New Yorker with Asperger's syndrome.
