- DirectorSam MendesStarsDean-Charles ChapmanGeorge MacKayDaniel MaysApril 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.(MASSIVE SPOILERS)
Couldn't wait to see his after the fantastic trailers and it was everything I hoped it would be and more.
Telling the story of two soldiers picked to track down an army of 1600 men who are walking into a German trap during WW1. They are against time and have to travel behind enemy lines to find the men.
This film however is not one like say Saving Private Ryan which has its battle set pieces. This film is about the two men on their mission and the hazards of war that they have to go through in order to reach their goal. Don't get me wrong, there are battles along the way but nothing like in Private Ryan. What makes this film is the production and yet again Roger Deakins incredible photography. I went to see this at a normal cinema screen first then a showing in IMAX. Out of all the films I have seen in IMAX this was without the best looking regards how clear the image was along with the sound.
The two 'leads' are excellent in this. Both George Mackay and Dean Charles Chapman are just brilliant and the biggest shock is where one of our heroes meets his end half way through the film which was a shock for me as I thought any deaths would have happened at the end. But this is just another part of the film that it does so well and makes it so different.
Without a doubt the best scene in the film is where Mackay enters a destroyed town which in turn shows off the incredible talents of Roger Deakins. The scene is just incredible and is lit only by fires and flares. On top of this, Thomas Newmans incredible score also kicks in with his best part of the score and this scene alone just reminded me WHY I go to the cinema and enjoy film. It was amazing.
Quite a cast along the way with cameos from Benedict Cumberpatch and Colin Firth. Richard Madden from Game Of Thrones also pops up at the end, but unfortunately he is the brother of our fallen hero.
Contrary to belief this film was NOT shot in one take but has been filmed to make it feel that way. There are certain scenes where you know there was a cut and don't get me wrong, I am not knocking this at all and again, this is why the film works on so many levels.
Just like The Revenant, 1917 is one of those rare films which makes you feel like you are actually 'there' and this makes the film even more special. It deserves all the praise its currently getting and it wouldn't surprise me if it cleans up at The Oscars, not that I'll be watching.
For me though 1917 is film of the year so far and I'll be amazed if its topped. A masterpiece of film making. - DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsElisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet DyerWhen Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.(MASSIVE SPOILERS)
So after Universals Dark Universe died before it even got started, they have gone back to the drawing board updating their ‘Classic Monsters’. The Invisible Man is not a Dark Universe movie (I doubt we will get any more), but Universal have made the right decision getting Blumhouse involved and to be honest, after this effort, that’s what they should have done from the start. At the time of writing, the film has made three times its production budget back in a single day in the U.S alone.
The Invisible Man is a classic case of awful trailer, incredible movie and updating it to a modern audience perfectly.
Telling the story of Cecilia (played brilliantly by Elizabeth Moss) who from the start flees a very abusive and violent relationship to one Adrian Griffin who in turn is a genius in the field of optics. After being told Griffin has committed suicide, Cecilia feels free at last. However, once strange occurrences start happening while staying with a friend and her daughter, Cecilia comes to the conclusion that Griffin is still alive, is using his genius in optics and has made himself invisible. What happens from here is what makes the film is that, as well as Cecilia, we the audience also know what’s happening but watching her being accused of horrendous things she hasn’t done (including a shocking murder in the films best scene) is where this film excels. There is also a scene involving Adrians brother, who is also in on what is going on and explains that Cecilia is pregnant after swapping her birth control pills for something else. This is why Adrian refuses to actually kill Cecilia. Due to all this, we are just willing for Cecilia to fight back and wonder how she will clear her name, as well as stopping what Adrian is doing to her.
The film ends where, in a twist and after a fight to the death, we find that it is actually Adrians brother who was The Invisible Man and he in turn claims he faked Adrians death and has imprisoned him at Adrians own home. Or did he?????? This is where the film excels in paranoia, but due to how strong the character of Cecilia is, she knows her husband and the sort of manipulator he is and she turns the tables on him using his own technology and getting her revenge.
Leigh Whanell has just excelled himself here, after being involved with horror for quite some time now, especially with the brilliant Insidious series. The film he has directed here is beautifully shot, the San Francisco setting makes it more special, the cast are excellent and the icing on the cake is another great score from Benjamin Wallfisch. Even the tech used to bring the Invisible Man to life is grounded in reality to make it more believable.
Horror is back in brilliant style at the moment and as mentioned, after the success of The Conjuring Universe, Insidious and now Halloween, Blumhouse, James Wan, Leigh Whanell et al should have been responsible for the Dark Universe from the get go. They know how to do horror brilliantly and The Conjuring 2 was the best horror film in years.
The Invisible Man though was beyond what I thought it was going to be and if the ending of this film is anything to go by, The Invisible Woman will be next. I only hope Blumhouse oversee all the updates of Universals Classic Monsters going forward. Brilliant. - DirectorChris SandersStarsHarrison FordOmar SyCara GeeA sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon.Couldn't wait to see this as I am a huge lover of animals as well as Harrison Ford.
Haven't read the books or seen any previous versions of this story so I had no big expectations at all.
Set in the late 1800's and telling the story of pooch Buck who goes on an adventure of a lifetime after being 'dognapped' and sold after living with a rich and well off family. After coming across humanities cruelty, Buck learns to work with a pack of dogs delivering mail in Alaska. After the mail round is cancelled due to upcoming technology in the form of telegraph poles, Buck (and his pack) are sold to a very repugnant stuck up bunch of people played brilliantly by Dan Stevens and Karen Gillan. Enter Harrison Fords John Thornton who Buck met briefly earlier in the film when he gave John back his Harmonica after he dropped it. Once Buck and his pack are literally nearly whipped to death moving this repugnant family on a sled, John takes Buck in, but with the exception of Stevens, we find out the pack and the family are killed after falling through thin ice. The rest of the film is John and Buck going on an adventure to find gold. They find a cabin, settle and find a LOT of gold. Hot on their trail though is Dan Stevens who is looking for revenge (and gold). After a struggle once he catches up with them, John is shot and killed. Buck however settles with a wild pack of dogs to live out the rest of his life in peace.
A lot of people complaining before and after regards the use of CGI as there are no real animals used in this film which I am so glad about. But considering the effects are done by the same motion capture that brought us the new Planet Of The Apes films and any fears of poor CGI are put to bed. After a while, the animal effects are that good, I forgot I was actually watching CGI.
Add to the film a stunning score by the getting better and better John Powell and its the icing on the cake for this great film.
Which brings me nicely to Harrison Ford. I am being completely biased here as he is my favourite actor of all time. An actor who in what will soon be SIX decades he has entertained the world and the ONLY actor in movie history to have films over that whole time take over $100 million dollars. An absolute legend and his performances just seem to be getting better and better all the time. Ever since he starred in the wonderful Age Of Adaline, his acting has been top notch although his best acting is still in the baseball film '42'. Indiana Jones 5 just around the corner and I cant wait. The movie industry will never be the same once he's gone.
Call Of The Wild though should appeal to all ages and I am so glad I went to see it. Definite buy when its out. - DirectorGuy RitchieStarsMatthew McConaugheyCharlie HunnamMichelle DockeryAn American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.Went to see this purely to get value out of my cinema card but so glad I did.
Without a doubt, Guy Richies best film since Lock Stock. Telling the story of how Matthew McConaughey's Mickie Pearson who is wanting to sell up and move on from his drug business. What follows is multiple twists and turns as the people who is hoping to sell too try and basically screw him over. Although he is s drug dealer Mickie is an honourable man when it comes to doing business and also has a loving wife who also looks after the business side of things. Although he is taken aback by the attacks, he ends up winning the day.
A superb cast with a scene stealing Colin Farrell as a man who runs a gym/boxing club and who in turn gets entangled into helping Mickie when he really needs it. Hugh Grant excellent as well but after what he thinks of Brexit and trying to brainwash people into voting for marxist anti-semetic parties like Labour, he can f**k right off!!! What an idiot and for a man who has millions upon millions in the bank and has no idea how real people live, he needs to shut his mouth. If he loves the EU so much, p**s off and live there!!! I would NOT have gone to see this film if I had known this beforehand so he needs to keep it shut in future.
As mentioned though, Richies best film since Lock Stock and one of those films where you think the 'good guys' are beaten only for things to turn around nicely at the end. - DirectorClint EastwoodStarsPaul Walter HauserSam RockwellBrandon StanleySecurity guard Richard Jewell is an instant hero after foiling a bomb attack at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but his life becomes a nightmare when the FBI leaks to the media that he is a suspect in the case.So after last years brilliant The Mule, Clint Eastwood directs yet another film based on a true story and although not quite as good as The Mule, it is still a great film. The fact that Clint is nearly 90, is it quite possible that he is without a doubt the greatest actor and director that ever lived?? The fact he is still going, I would say that is a fact.
Telling the true story of Richard Jewell (played brilliantly by Paul Walter Hauser) who discovers a suspicious package (we find it is a large pipe nail bomb) while working as security at a concert during the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Unfortunately the bomb eventually goes off and two people are killed. But thanks to Richard finding the bomb and alerting the authorities, it could have been a LOT worse.
Hailed a hero directly after, suspicion then falls on Richard that it was HE who actually planted the bomb in order to become famous. Due to his unorthodox way of speaking, life choices he has made in the past as well as the present, the FBI believe he is guilty. Cue a fantastic Sam Rockwell as Richards lawyer who he met a decade previously and who in turn believes Richard is 100% innocent after finding out he could not have made a phone call to the police saying there is a bomb in the park just before the bomb went off due to the amount of time getting back to the scene of the bomb from the phone booth.
Twists and turns ensue but Richard and his mother (a career defining performance from a wonderful Kathy Bates) are hounded without mercy by the authorities and the press.
I wont ruin the ending and I keep saying this but I knew nothing about this story and for me, films like this work the better for it, especially if its based on a true story.
Other stars brilliant in the film is Jon Hamm playing the lead FBI agent who is convinced of Richards guilt. Then a gorgeous Olivia Wilde playing a female member of the press who starts the story of Richard possibly being guilty until eventually she comes to her senses when she finds out that Richard is more innocent than guilty.
So yet another great film from Clint and the man just has no signs of slowing down as I really thought The Mule was going to be his last film. I'm so glad I was wrong. - DirectorTodd HaynesStarsMark RuffaloAnne HathawayTim RobbinsA corporate defense attorney takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution.I was in two minds whether to go see this or not but glad I did.
Telling the true story of Rob Bilott (played brilliantly by Mark Ruffalo) who takes on pharmaceutical company Dupont after finding out the company has been deliberately poisoning the water in his home town for years. Once a friend of his Grandparents comes to see him personally asking him to look into what he believes is going on, he delves deeper and deeper into the appalling greed at the expense of peoples lives which have been ruined due to the poisoning.
The film goes on to the expected courtroom scene, but what we find out is that even today and after decades of fighting, Ron Bilott is still taking Dupont to court defending peoples cases and each time getting a bigger and bigger settlement with each and every win.
I supposed its not a 'feel good' movie due to the subject matter and the fact that today I can only imagine what goes on behind closed doors of these appalling greedy money obsessed companies, just makes my blood boil.
Considering what happened in this film, its absolutely incredible that nothing has changed with these excessive companies in the search for profit and greed. Just like what is going on currently with Coronavirus, this planet and its people are a disgrace, all in the name of science, profit, the economy and the vile word: Greed. I would get off if I could. - DirectorDean ParisotStarsKeanu ReevesAlex WinterKristen SchaalOnce told they'd save the universe during a time-traveling adventure, two would-be rockers from San Dimas, California find themselves as middle-aged dads still trying to crank out a hit song and fulfill their destiny. At least we had one film to see this year to make us laugh during this horrendous year and that was Bill and Ted Face The Music.
Huge fan of the first two (with the second still the best), but with this film, it nails the 'heart' of these characters.
I suppose in a way the film blends the stories of the first two films into one only this time, we have Bill and Teds adventure as well as their daughters (basically female copies of Bill and Ted in every way) where they travel through time by getting musicians from the past come together to help create the best song ever written in order to literally save the world.
The film move along perfectly and the welcome return of William Sadler as Death is a highlight even though his time in this is short.
Considering the song was meant to be the films major final act, I was expecting so much more from the 'world saving song' which is also just an instrumental. This minor gripe aside though, I was laughing all the way through although I think this needs to be the 'end' for Bill and Ted and as other people pointed out, this was the fist time that Keanu Reeves actually looked old.
If this is the end though, its rounded out a good trilogy which I will definitely be buying and with the way the world is today, remember this: Be excellent to each other :) :) :) :) - DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan. So, after all the hub hub both online and The Oscars I went to see this to make my own mind up and see if it was good as everyone was making out.
The answer is yes..........and no. Like other people have been pointing out, its wonderful to have such an original film instead of all the remakes or sequels going on. The film is also beautifully shot along with some great characters. However, its the weird and crazy story line that lets it down.
Telling the story of a Korean family basically living in squalor when they decide to slowly replace the help of a very rich family living the high life. They eventually replace the driver, the teacher and the housekeeper, etc just so they can earn money and live the high life when the family is away all while making out they are not from the same family but just different people. This is the majority of the film until things all come to pieces when we find out that the original housekeeper has been keeping her husband in the house in a secret basement. As the original housekeeper finds out they are actually all the same family, she tries to blackmail them only for it to get out of control as the family want to carry on with how things are. In what I can only describe as this films Tarantino style third act blood bath, the husband of the original housekeeper escapes and goes on a murder rampage while the home owners are throwing a birthday party for their son. When the father of the 'imposter' family loses his daughter in the carnage, he stabs the homeowners father to death. Running away, he decides to hide in the now empty secret basement. This is where the films ends although we do get some kind of 'flash forward' where the son of the father living in the secret basement decides to make amends by working hard for a living, buying the home which we have spent most of the film in, in the hope of one day being able to see his Dad again.
I was expecting some kind of twist or other type horror with what people were saying about this film but it wasn't to be. Like the movie 'Us' the story (especially at the end) is just too much to actually believe and surely if the family were so good at this sort of deception, forgery, etc, what on earth were they doing living in such squalor in the first place??? Mark Kermode bragging he has seen the film four times but once was enough for me. Plus he was also praising the music which I found to be unmemorable and even now, I can't remember a single theme.
As mentioned, this film literally swept up at The Oscars and I have no idea why?? But just like The Shape Of Water which won best film in 2018, this film is very much the same where praise and adoration has been heaped on it but I have no idea why it has ended up winning such high awards?? Yes, both were 'good' films but no way did either film warrant such award success and for me 1917 was robbed completely this year. What with the whole diversity problem rearing its ugly head again I wonder if this was the academys way of getting out of jail for free, because since Parasite swept up at The Oscars, the whole diversity thing seem to have been completely forgotten!! Regards to this awful diversity thing, are we meant to be rewarding talent OR is it just the colour of someones skin or what sex they are?????????? Joke.
I have nothing against foreign films with subtitles and my film collection has hundreds of these sort of films. Parasite though, overrated and just does not warrant the success or awards that he has been given. - DirectorCathy YanStarsMargot RobbieRosie PerezMary Elizabeth WinsteadAfter splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroines Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.So after her role in the slightly disappointing Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn played superbly yet again by Margot Robbie gets her own movie. Is it good?? Yes it is and although its better than Suicide Squad, this sequel by the end felt completely unnecessary and maybe they should have waited until the Suicide Squad sequel was released as this film just felt like some excuse for feminism to REALLY come to the fore, and thats this film in a nutshell really.
After Harley Quinn is captured and about to be killed by a badly miscast Ewan McGregor as villain Roman Sionis, she makes a deal for her life by tracking down a diamond which has been accidentally stolen by character Cassandra Cain played by Ella Jay Basco. Needless to say, Roman puts a bounty on the girls head anyway so every low life in Gotham is hunting for the girl including Harley Quinn. Harley just manages to stay one step ahead of everyone else until the very end where Harley and her new 'Birds Of Prey' are trapped at an abandoned fairground. The 'Birds of Prey' are played really well especially Jurnee Smollett-Bell playing singer turned heroine Black Canary. What follows are the girls basically kicking the ass of every male going regardless of size or what weapons they may have.
What this film does really well is its style. It is very dark in places and the whole 'world' created here is very well done, so are the costumes. Although the film has lots of humour, it falls flat most of the time (with the exception of Robbie) and its all thanks for Ewan McGregors badly miscast Roman. He tries to hard to be funny and did he get his job because his new beau Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also in the film or maybe it was the other way round?? Either way, someone else should have got the role.
This brings me on to the violence. Considering Joker got some shocking press saying how violent it was, even though it isn't really violent until towards the end. Birds Of Prey is 100 times more violent than Joker was with even more bad language and no one batters an eyelid!!?? Is this because if it had been condemned this way, would that mean all the feminists and whoever would have been in uproar?? So did people just keep their mouths shut in case it upset the WOKE generation??
So the film was 'okay' and I doubt Warners will top the heights of Joker (unless Phoenix returns in a sequel or spin off). If it hadn't been for Margot Robbie though, this film would have fallen flat on its face. Here's hoping that the Suicide Squad sequel directed by James Gunn will be any better?? - DirectorJosh BooneStarsMaisie WilliamsAnya Taylor-JoyCharlie HeatonFive young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.Had to go and see this as the trailers looked good but the fact that it kept being put back and back and back and then when it was released, it got released during the year of 'Kung Flu'!! which did the film no favours whatsoever!!
So after the EXTREMEL:Y underrated Dark Phoenix, we have The New Mutants (which I believe take splace in Fox's X Men Universe??) which tells the story of I suppose an asylum for young Mutants who are their to contain their powers but at the same time, learn to live with them and eventually use them.
A wonderful young cast including Anna Taylor Joy and Maisie Williams breaking free from Game of Thrones. The only downside with this film is the last act where it seems to make the same mistake every single DCU film has made by going completely over the top with a loud annoying CGI battle fest. Considering how the rest of the film was, this was a HUGE mistake and didn't 'fit' with the rest of the film. Due to this I knocked a couple of stars off as it would have easily been an 8/9 film otherwise. The soundtrack was also excellent too.
Needless to say, any hopes of a sequel were dashed while this film was languishing in production hell Fox got sold to Disney along with every other property it owned.
Saying that, it has just been announced that Disney will have a separate 'R' Rated channel so who knows, further down the line and especially now that marvel (Disney owned) have the rights back to X-Men. So only time will tell.
The New Mutants though was a great original film in the current plethora of superhero movies and its a shame its ended up the way it has and pretty much completely forgotten already. - DirectorRobert EggersStarsRobert PattinsonWillem DafoeValeriia KaramanTwo lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.Didn’t get a chance to see this at the cinema as it was only showing in selected cinemas.
However, bought the blu ray and the film was kind of what I was expecting and hoped it would be. I have to be honest, I absolutely hated the overhyped and awful The Witch where the title character was in the film literally 5 minutes. Plus the film itself was a tedious bore with the whole ‘Thus, though’ talk all the way through the film. The Lighthouse though I thought was a huge improvement with the setting and use of black and white helping the film no end. Telling the story of two lighthouse keepers starting their long work tour at a very secluded and isolated lighthouse. Both characters played with brilliant unease and menace by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
It is quite difficult to explain the story of this film but it depicts brilliantly the descent into madness that both characters end up in. Looks and feels like a horror film without any creatures or gore. So, sit back, and make up your own mind with what this film means. Just don’t expect anything out of this world.
Brilliantly shot and made though and I only hope Robert Eggars decides to make a straight up horror film at some point along the lines of Universals Horror franchise or even The Conjuring universe. - DirectorTaika WaititiStarsRoman Griffin DavisThomasin McKenzieScarlett JohanssonA young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.Well after a superb hilarious trailer and being a fan of Taika Waititi I couldn't wait to see this. Public and critics raving about it, yet I came out very disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I found The Death Of Stalin a better and funnier film. That film shares a lot with this one.
Telling the story of 'Jojo' who is 'trained' by the Nazis to become a Nazi. He gets his name as he couldn't bring himself to kill a rabbit in front of other recruits. I think this scene alone made me realise I wasn't going to enjoy it as even though Jojo doesn't kill the rabbit, one of the Nazis in command snaps its neck and throws it away like trash anyway. The main thrust of the story is when Jojo finds a Jew hidden living in his Mums house. Jojo becomes friends with her, helps her and he obviously changes his ways, even though he is still training to become a Nazi.
Plus points in the film is whenever Taika is on screen playing Jojos imaginary friend: Adolf Hitler. Yes you read that right. Just like Hunt For The Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok, Taika can do no wrong when he is on screen. An hilarious man and its all down to his look and accent. Unfortunately, this is all the praise I can put on this film. There is some heart wrenching moments one of which is when Jojo finds his Mum (played wonderfully by Scarlet Johansson) hanged for helping the Jews. Its brilliantly done as all through the film we seem to be focused on Scarlets shoes, and when Jojo sees here, its her shoes he accidentally 'bumps' into as she is hanging there.
As other people have pointed out, the best bits of this film were in the trailer. I think although the film is a comedy, this subject matter is too dark a time to make fun of all the way through and this is why, for me, it just didn't work.
Shame. - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsJohn David WashingtonRobert PattinsonElizabeth DebickiArmed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time. One of this years films that was not a casualty of the 'Kung Flu' (thanks China!!!!).
Without a doubt Nolans most crazy film which I am not even going to try and explain. However, its just even more proof that Nolan needs to make a Bond film.
Part thriller, part sci-fi, and tonnes of action, but the story is just too far 'out there' this was never going to be film that anyone enjoys.
Its a shame as Nolan has delivered on the cast again with Michael David Washington and Robert Pattinson making a great team.
But yet again (sigh) Nolan has let him self down AGAIN with some shocking sound in this film. He must read comments like mine as I swear he now does it deliberately where, in any scene with his cast in a mask, he goes out his way to make sure that we cant here what they are saying!! It seems to becoming his fatal flaw. If he does it again, I will refuse to watch any more of his films as sound is there to elevate the cinema experience, not ruin it!! Same goes for Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and dont even get me started with Dunkirks horrendous sound mix, even in IMAX. It completely ruined the film for me.
Possible Nolans 'worst' film but far from being an awful film. - DirectorWilliam Brent BellStarsKatie HolmesChristopher ConveryOwain YeomanAfter a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms.Sigh
After an already underwhelming first part (where it wasn't even a horror but a thriller) we have a pretty pointless sequel in Brahms: The Boy II.
Telling the story of how a family move to a home near the house from the original. After their son finds Brahms buried in woodland, he takes it home with him and then becomes 'possessed' by Brahms. What follows are no deaths but accidents where not a lot really happens. We find that the grounds keeper is the one who has actually set things up as he knows all about Brahms and he is the one who makes sure the son found the doll. Only good things about the film is the production with the house from the original recreated perfectly and the cinematography.
The cast is okay except for the actor playing the husband. Plus what on Earth Katie Holmes is doing in this is beyond me?? How the mighty have fallen.
So definitely worse than the first one and that is in no way saying much at all. Avoid.
