Difficult Actors to Work With47 of 48
Jim Carrey
Was extremely belligerent during the filming of Man on the Moon (1999).
Carrey insisted on using method acting to portray famously belligerent comedian Andy Kaufman, staying in character throughout the whole shoot as both Kaufman and Kaufman's alter-ego, Tony Clifton.
Carrey's antics during the shoot included harassing the cast and crew as often as possible, bringing a group of Hell's Angels to the set, bursting into Steven Spielberg's offices unannounced, deliberately crashing a car onto the set, blasting music in his trailer, and both throwing a bottle at and spitting on Jerry Lawler, which led to Lawler beating Carrey so severely, he ended up in the hospital.
Director Milos Forman reportedly had to literally beg Carrey to behave throughout the shoot, and was quoted as saying "I have never been intimidated by another man, and I am intimidated by Tony Clifton."
Carrey's behavior was so appalling that the Universal executives tried everything they could to withhold any footage of his on-set behavior to avoid making Carrey look, in his own words, 'like an asshole'. His behavior was eventually chronicled in the documentary, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017).
Carrey also famously denounced his involvement with Kick-Ass 2 (2013) several months before the film's release, angering many involved with the production. Carrey claimed he couldn't support the film's level of violence in the wake of the then-recent Sandy Hook shooting.
Those involved with the film who spoke out against Carrey included Kick-Ass author Mark Millar and Carrey's co-star, Chloë Grace Moretz, who said, "It's a movie. If you are going to believe and be affected by an action film, you shouldn't go to see Pocahontas because you are going to think you are a Disney Princess. If you are that easily swayed, you might see The Silence of the Lambs and think you are a serial killer. It's a movie and it's fake, and I've known that since I was a kid... I don't want to run around trying to kill people and cuss. If anything, these movies teach you what not to do."
