- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.9.5/10 - Masterpiece. Greatest horror movie of all time. Started the year off right with this movie. (Will Review) *Added to my Top 10*
- DirectorRoberto BenigniStarsRoberto BenigniNicoletta BraschiGiorgio CantariniWhen an open-minded Jewish waiter and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.8.5/10 - A beautiful and daring concept to have a father hide the truth and horrors of the Holocaust through his humor and creativity. The plot alone is quite genius, and extremely impactful. I wish I could rate this movie higher, but even giving it this already high rating is a bit generous considering it is quite flawed. The beginning first act of the movie isn’t very good in my opinion. Benigni carries the movie on his back with his positivity and humor, but the first act just feels too silly like slapstick. Most of the humor relies on contrivances, along with the romance that is borderline unbelievable, and has not aged well. Unfortunately for this concept to work it does rely on too many contrivances, though many can be forgiven, especially by that amazingly heart breaking ending. This is a powerful and important movie I can recommend to everyone.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsRyan GoslingClaire FoyJason ClarkeA look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.8/10
- DirectorGus Van SantStarsVince VaughnAnne HecheJulianne MooreA young female embezzler arrives at the Bates Motel, which has terrible secrets of its own.4/10 - Another pointless remake of a classic. This being a nearly shot for shot remake totally robs the movie of the tension (unless you watched this before the original which is a tragedy). It would’ve been more interesting for them to take a different direction with the movie, but they just remade it almost exactly but worse. None of the actors are as good as the original. The cast actually has some really good actors, but it seems like none of them are trying, or are miscast for the movie. Also ironically making it colored actually removes some of the symbolism of the original, and looks way uglier.
- DirectorNiki CaroStarsLiu YifeiDonnie YenGong LiTo keep her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army, a fearless young woman disguises herself as a man and battles northern invaders in China.3.5/10 - Another pointless live action remake of a great Disney animated classic. Out of the remakes I was excited for this one the most because it seemed like they were actually trying something different. Turns out the changes to the movie only make it inferior in every way to the original. In the original, Mulan goes against all odds proves she is equal and in some ways better than the male soldiers in smart and believable ways. This movie ruins the message by having Mulan have Chi powers, so it’s not about overcoming the misogyny in her culture, but her having goofy super powers to be better. They removed characters like Mushu for realism, yet they added Xianniang who literally turns into a bird, and more unrealistic than that are her non-sensical character decisions. The other side characters are also sadly extremely dull and forgettable, when I still have vibrant memories of the original. The acting does not help at all mostly being wooden, even with some great actors like Donnie Yen and Tzi Ma phoning it in. This especially pains me because Mulan was one of my favorite animated Disney films as a kid. They striped plus changed everything that made it so good and just made it worse, silly, and dull. Somehow it’s even more unrealistic than the animated movie which benefits from more suspension of disbelief. The only positives I can give it are that at the very least the movie looks quite nice because of the colorful sets, costumes, and locations, but it’s also brought down by some terrible editing.
