PeEp ThIs: 100 Underappreciated Gems & Cult Classics
If you're reading this, thank you, I really appreciate it. I really dig cinema and wanted to come up with a couple lists in hopes of people checking out some movies they might have missed or forgotten.
These films already have a cult following or are destined to be future cult classics.
~A cult film, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film with a cult following, obscure or unpopular with mainstream audiences, and often revolutionary or ironically enjoyed.
Cult films are defined as much by audience reaction as they are content. Sometimes, the definition is expanded to exclude films that have been released by major studios or have big budgets, try specifically to become cult films, or become accepted by mainstream audiences and critics.
This list is not in any particular order. Please leave your comments and other suggestions for cult films.

100 titles
- DirectorAdam WingardStarsSharni VinsonJoe SwanbergAJ BowenWhen the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.An absolute classic and original thriller. In the vein of "home invasion" movies, there is nothing that is equal to this. It sets the bar and it is most definitely a high one. Once you see a couple movies like this it can get a bit redundant and easy to guess who the masked killer is. This is not that kind of movie. You won't see it coming. And that's a good thing.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.Someone I know compared this to "The Transporter" and action films like that. Not at all; that's like comparing a gourmet restaurant to a fast food joint. This film is beautifully shot and is masterfully acted. It is incredibly intense and has an amazing soundtrack. It transcends beyond a standard action film and becomes a dramatic experience that stays with you.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonCiarán HindsAfter a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.I've never seen a better blend of witty humor and realistically graphic violence. 'nuff said...believe the hype... it's hilarious, quotable and intense.
- DirectorGeorge ClooneyStarsSam RockwellDrew BarrymoreGeorge ClooneyAn adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell), in which he purports to have been a C.I.A. hitman.True story or not? That doesn't really matter when you boil it down. It is an endlessly fascinating and entertaining movie. Who knew George Clooney was such a gifted director? This movie is full of amazing performances from acclaimed actors and also some great cameos from their famous Hollywood friends.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsMira SorvinoJeremy NorthamAlexander GoodwinThree years ago, entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler genetically created an insect to kill cockroaches carrying a virulent disease. Now, the insects are out to destroy their only predator, mankind.Criminally underrated horror film by Guillermo del Toro. Great cast, interesting concept and wonderful visual look elevates this above you're standard monster (or in this case insect) movie. Make sure you watch the Director's Cut.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsMacon BlairDevin RatrayAmy HargreavesA mysterious outsider's quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family.A unique take on the "revenge" thriller. A very nicely done slow burn of a flick. It's very gripping and pulls you into the story with a normal every day guy who's life gets turned upside down and the lengths he'll go to to avenge and protect his family. This is an interesting and realistic film that builds to an exciting climax that is well worth your time.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.Although I'm not thoroughly familiar with Korean movies. I can safely say this is the best one I've ever seen. The story is engrossing and the action is off the charts. This movie embraces the taboo topics that most movies would ignore or play down. Steer clear of the American re-make and check this out.
- DirectorRodrigo CortésStarsRyan ReynoldsJosé Luis García-PérezRobert PatersonPaul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.Let me start by saying I'm not a huge fan of Ryan Rodney Reynolds. He typically comes off as undeservedly arrogant. Even "Deadpool", it was good but over rated and over hyped. So an hour and a half of him alone in a box certainly did not get my interest initially. All I can say is any expectations that I had were dead wrong. Rodrigo Cortes has made a movie that is literally a man in a box that you can't help but become invested in or stop watching.
- DirectorDebra GranikStarsJennifer LawrenceJohn HawkesGarret DillahuntAn unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. It had a premise that didn't sound particularly interesting but is a must-see movie. It may be a culture shock to some (which is a good thing) but this is one of the most emotionally moving films I've ever seen. An absolute must see dramatic thriller.
- DirectorStuart GordonStarsMena SuvariStephen ReaRussell HornsbyA young woman commits a hit-and-run, then finds her fate tied to her victim. This is one of the best "based on a true story" movies ever. Girl hits homeless man with car. Man becomes lodged in the windshield. Girl decides to go home instead of the emergency room. Girl leaves man "stuck" while she has sex with her boyfriend and goes to work. Watch this unbelievable story unfold in front of your eyes.
- DirectorAndrew CurrieStarsKesun LoderBilly ConnollyCarrie-Anne MossIn an Earthly world resembling the 1950s, a cloud of space radiation has shrouded the planet, resulting in the dead becoming zombies that desire live human flesh. A company called Zomcon has been able to control the zombie population. Zombies can be temporarily neutralized by being shot, but can only be permanently neutralized by their brain being destroyed. Their ultimate disposal is through cremation, or burial, the latter which requires decapitation with the head being buried separately from the body. Conversely, Zomcon has created the domestication collar, when activated and placed on a zombie makes the zombie controllable, and thus an eternally productive creature within society. Because all dead initially become zombies, the elderly are viewed negatively and suspectly. And all people, adult or child, learn to shoot to kill to protect society. Zomcon is the go to organization for all things zombie. In the town of Willard, the Robinsons - father Bill (Dylan Baker), mother Helen (Carrie-Anne Moss), and adolescent son Timmy (Kesun Loder) - are one family who don't own a zombie as a domestic, since Bill is afraid of zombies, as, when he was a child, he had to shoot his own zombie father, who tried to eat him. Bill has thus become fascinated with funerals to see zombies put away permanently. But Helen feels pressured to get a zombie when Zomcon's new head of security in Willard, the officious Jonathan Bottoms (Henry Czerny), moves into the neighborhood with his family. Never having had to deal with a zombie directly, Timmy is initially wary of their zombie. But as a lonely child who has no friends and is often bullied, Timmy eventually befriends their zombie, who he names Fido (Sir Billy Connolly), as he treats the zombie much like a faithful pet dog. Timmy protects Fido at all cost, even after Fido, due to no fault of its own, is implicated in some deaths, which creates a mini-wave of loose zombies unknown to Zomcon. But Fido may play a larger role within the family as a companion for Helen, who is largely neglected by Bill, since he sees human affection as ultimately resulting in such difficult issues as what happened between him and his own father. With Timmy and Helen treating Fido with kindness, Fido, in turn, may prove that not all zombies, even when without their domestication collar, are out to kill anyone and everyone in their path.Equal to or in my opinion better than "Shaun of the Dead" in terms of zombie comedy/horror movies. Endlessly entertaining, not overloaded with gore but thoroughly interesting and amusing.
- DirectorBrian HelgelandStarsMel GibsonGregg HenryMaria BelloPorter is shot by his wife and best friend and is left to die. When he survives he plots revenge.Director's Cut could mean any number of things...studio interference, re-shoots, poor test screenings. Most of the time that just means a couple more minutes added but sometimes there are drastic differences from the original released. This is one of those big changes. I liked this movie with it's sharp writing and nice mix of violence with dark humor. 'Like' has become 'love'. If you've never seen it and your a big film buff I'd say watch both versions to see the difference. If you've never seen it, Straight Up is hands down the way to go.
- DirectorEli RothStarsLorenza IzzoAriel LevyAaron BurnsA group of student activists travels to the Amazon to save the rain forest and soon discover that they are not alone, and that no good deed goes unpunished.I'm a huge horror fan so I've seen most of Eli Roth's movies and I'm generally not overly impressed with them. This is not only his most disturbing movie but it's full of dark humor. It's a fantastic homage to cannibal tribe movies of the past and is a great warning film for all those social justice warriors. Good gory fun plus jokes about diarrhea and masturbation.
- DirectorBruce A. EvansStarsKevin CostnerDemi MooreWilliam HurtA well-respected businessman is sometimes controlled by his murder and mayhem-loving alter ego.Strong candidate for one of the best serial killer movies ever made. Don't let Dane Cook deter you from watching. It's also an interesting take on addiction and what lengths an addict will go to and the destruction created by these behaviors.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGeorge ClooneyJennifer LopezVing RhamesA career bank robber breaks out of jail, and shares a moment of mutual attraction with a U.S. Marshal he has kidnapped.I'm partial to Elmore Leonard adaptations as he is one of my favorite authors. This is one of the best along with "Jackie Brown" and the "Justified" tv series. Great cast with a great script = great movie.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsDaniel RadcliffeJuno TempleMax MinghellaIn the aftermath of his girlfriend's mysterious death, a young man awakens to find strange horns sprouting from his forehead.I know I'm in the minority but I can honestly say I've never read a Harry Potter book or watched any of the movies. I say this because those are what I associate Daniel Radcliffe with and so I can't really speak to his acting in those. But he is magnificent in this film which is a dark comedy as well as it's a supernatural thriller. Another great film from director Alexandre Aja.
- DirectorPete TravisStarsKarl UrbanOlivia ThirlbyLena HeadeyIn a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.An absolute must see for fans of the comic books but also for fans of "intelligent action movies." I'm not very familiar with the comics that it's based on but it's very faithful from what I can tell. Sylvestor Stallone attempted an adaptation years ago which is instantly forgettable but this is one the most stylish action movies I've ever seen.
- DirectorJoel SchumacherStarsNicolas CageJoaquin PhoenixJames GandolfiniA private investigator is hired to discover if a "snuff film" is authentic or not.Nicholas Cage is very inconsistent and quirky as an actor. Joel Schumacher is extremely hit or miss when it comes to directors. So this is an experiment with the two that works very well as one of the darkest films from a major company I can think of. Fascinating story (although disowned by it's writer) that delves into the dark underbelly of society and disturbing curiosities. Great supporting cast too.
- DirectorJohn WatersStarsJohnny DeppRicki LakeAmy LocaneIn 1950s Baltimore, a bad boy with a heart of gold wins the love of a good girl, whose boyfriend sets out for revenge. This is not the first movie by John Waters that I was exposed to, that honor goes to "Serial Mom" but it's my favorite. It contains many of his signature trademarks as a director but is not as crude? Yes I guess crude works. It's a great musical for someone who doesn't like musicals and is consistently over shadowed by it's sister movie(s)/musical "Hairspray". It's also one of Johnny Depp's earliest roles and he delivers like he usually does.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsRob ReinerMichael McKeanChristopher GuestSpinal Tap, one of England's loudest bands, is chronicled by film director Marty DiBergi on what proves to be a fateful tour. The funniest faux documentary ever. It's brilliant and endlessly quotable. And by the end you'll be questioning why anyone would ever join this band as it's drummer. Absolutely hilarious.
- DirectorOliver StoneStarsSean PennJennifer LopezNick NolteA man heading to Vegas to pay off his gambling debt before the Russian mafia kills him is forced to stop in an Arizona town where everything that can go wrong does go wrong.Great cast playing weird characters, an intrinsic plot that keeps you guessing and Oliver Stone's unique visuals all add up to one hell of a ride through Superior, Arizona. Definitely a trip worth taking.
- DirectorMichael BayStarsSean ConneryNicolas CageEd HarrisA mild-mannered chemist and an ex-con must lead the counterstrike when a rogue group of military men, led by a renegade general, threaten a nerve gas attack from Alcatraz against San Francisco.Note: this is the only proof available that Michael Bay can make a competent and enjoyable film. Everything else associated with him seems to be cinematic cancer. It's an amazing action film. Too bad he spews out live action cartoons that are easily digestible to mainstream audiences. This one is a keeper, no doubt.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJet LiBob HoskinsMorgan FreemanA man enslaved by the mob since childhood and raised into behaving like a human attack dog escapes his captors and attempts to start a new life. Are you in the mood for an art-house style martial arts movie with a killer soundtrack? This has got you covered and then some. It's beautifully shot, the performances are great all around and the action is the best of it's kind.
Side note: Also known as "Danny the Dog". - DirectorJoe CarnahanStarsRay LiottaJason PatricChi McBrideWhen the trail goes cold on a murder investigation of a policeman, an undercover narcotics officer is lured back to the force to help solve the case.An overlooked gritty realistic police drama. Phenomenal acting with stylistic violence all wrapped up in a package that daringly blurs the line of right and wrong in regards to law enforcement. An engrossing thriller that keeps your eyes glued to the screen.
- DirectorJonathan GlazerStarsRay WinstoneBen KingsleyIan McShaneBrutal gangster Don Logan recruits "retired" safecracker Gal for one last job, but it goes badly for both of them.Quite possibly the most unique gangster movie I've seen. The part of Don Logan expertly played by Ben Kingsley is easily one of the most intimidating characters ever captured on celluloid. It delivers lines of dialogue that you'll never forget not that you'd want to.
- DirectorWayne KramerStarsPaul WalkerCameron BrightChazz PalminteriA low-ranking thug is entrusted by his crime boss to dispose of a gun that killed corrupt cops, but things get out of control when the gun ends up in wrong hands. An exciting and fast paced film that crosses the lines that most action/drama/thriller movies only hint at. It's the kind of film that keeps upping the ante, just when you think it's falling into place, the plot takes a twist you never see coming. A beautifully brutal movie. It's a wonderful twisted mystery/fairy tale.
- DirectorBrad AndersonStarsChristian BaleJennifer Jason LeighAitana Sánchez-GijónAn industrial worker who hasn't slept in a year begins to doubt his own sanity.Paranoia? A murder mystery that might not have actually happened? An emaciated Christian Bale? Affectionate prostitute? All of the above. This is a nightmare (not in a derogatory way) that slowly reveals itself right before your eyes. More proof of how gifted and committed Christian Bale is as an actor. Can be genuinely hard to watch at times.
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsBruce CampbellOssie DavisBob IvyWhen residents of their nursing home start dying of dubious causes, an aged Elvis and an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy discover that the perpetrator is an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions. An Elvis impersonator (or possibly the real deal?) and a black wheel-chaired bound man who believes that he is JFK battle an ancient Egyptian mummy who sucks his victim's souls out of them. And it's set in a dingy retirement home. How could you not be intrigued? There needs to be more movies like this.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Val KilmerMichelle MonaghanAfter being mistaken for an actor, a New York thief is sent to Hollywood to train under a private eye for a potential movie role, but the duo are thrown together with a struggling actress into a murder mystery. The best buddy detective movie ever? Quite possibly. A perfect blend of action and plenty of dark humor. An extremely unique mystery that you don't want to end. From the man behind the original "Lethal Weapon" & "Iron Man 3".
- DirectorJonathan LynnStarsEileen BrennanTim CurryMadeline KahnSix guests are anonymously invited to a strange mansion for dinner, but after their host is killed, they must cooperate with the staff to identify the murderer as the bodies pile up.Undisputed evidence that a classic Parker Bros. board game can be adapted into a wonderfully entertaining murder mystery/comedy with a stellar ensemble cast including Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd and Michael McKean. Plus there's multiple endings that you can choose from. But which one(s) is actually plausible?
- DirectorMark RomanekStarsRobin WilliamsConnie NielsenMichael VartanA mentally unstable photo developer targets an upper middle-class family after his obsession with them becomes more sick and disturbing than any of them could imagine.A perfect example of an obsession gone awry. The technology may be dated but it's still a twisted little movie. The late great Robin William's best dramatic role. Most of the film is bright and beautiful to watch but the tone is dark, and disturbing.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsChristian SlaterPatricia ArquetteDennis HopperIn Detroit, a pop-culture nerd steals cocaine from his new wife's pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood, prompting the mobsters who own the drugs to pursue the couple.Visionary director Tony Scott brings an early Quentin Tarantino script to life. The cast is beyond amazing (Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman Samuel L Jackson & more) especially the leads that play an amazingly lovable couple, the dialogue is witty and smart (some of Tarantino's best), the violence is bloody and realistic, plus plenty of dark humor. What else could you want in a movie?
Side note: apparently Brad Pitt's stoner character was the inspiration for "Pineapple Express". - DirectorDanny DeVitoStarsRobin WilliamsEdward NortonCatherine KeenerA kids' show host, Rainbow Randolph, is fired in disgrace while his replacement, Sheldon Mopes, A.K.A. Smoochy the Rhino, finds himself a rising star. Unfortunately for Sheldon, the business of kids' television isn't all child's play. This is the closest thing to Mr. Rogers vs. Barney the Dinosaur you'll ever see. And you have to admit that is the celebrity death-match you always wanted to experience. This is easily Danny DeVito's best film as a director. Robin Williams and Edward Norton make for an unusually amusing pair of adversaries. Plus you have to see Jon Stewart's haircut...
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyNaomie HarrisChristopher EcclestonFour weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary. This is the film that started the craze of fast moving infected un-dead people as opposed to the slow lumbering ones generally portrayed up until this point. A precious and over looked jewel in the crown of zombie movies. After "Night of the Living Dead" and before "The Walking Dead" there was this...and it is marvelous. A modern horror classic with great performances, beautiful cinematography and doesn't skimp on the gore.
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsBrandon LeeMichael WincottRochelle DavisA man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. One of the absolute best comic book movies ever and this was before there were seemingly dozens of them being made every year. Brandon Lee gives such an intense and emotional performance that is made even more chilling considering that he died while it was filming. A dark super hero film that will probably be re-booted at some point but it's got very big shoes to fill. Plus there's no topping this soundtrack filled with lots of ear-candy songs that you'll want to enjoy after the film is over. But avoid all the sequels, unless you're a die hard fan of the series.
- DirectorClark GreggStarsSam RockwellAnjelica HustonKelly MacdonaldA sex-addicted con-man pays for his mother's hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who rescue him from choking to death. An extremely entertaining adaptation from one of my favorite authors Chuck Palahniuk, best known for "Fight Club". You know you got a winner when your main character is a sex addicted, colonial reenactment actor who cons people out of money by pretending to choke in restaurants and is dealing with his hospitalized mother who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Dark comedy at its finest.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.A claustrophobic and intense horror film that doesn't play by the rules. It is elevated from a relatively simple premise that could easily become a recycled horror cliche of a flick into a non-stop gruesome survival thriller.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsTom CruiseJamie FoxxJada Pinkett SmithA cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles. One of the best murder for hire films ever. Forget all those "Mission Impossible" movies. This is the ultimate Tom Cruise as a bad-ass film that you'll ever see. And this is on top of the list of best Jamie Foxx performances (I would say he's only better in "Ray"). A great stylish thriller with great cinematography.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsMickey RourkeMarisa TomeiEvan Rachel WoodA faded professional wrestler must retire, but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle.A prime example of an actor completely disappearing into a role and becoming a character that you forget is fictional and becomes a whole new person that could easily exist in reality. A very powerful and emotional story. Don't hesitate if you think you need to like professional wrestling to enjoy this thoroughly engrossing movie. This is a performance by Mickey Rourke that needs to be seen over and over. A master class in acting. Makes for a great double feature with "Black Swan".
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future. The most cerebral horror movie ever. It's more of an interpretation than an adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Easily one of the best and most effective horror film ever made, yet there is a very small body count but lots of blood. It's eye-witnessing a man's slow descent into absolute madness. One of Kubrick's best. Transcends true terror into art.
- DirectorRob ZombieStarsSid HaigSheri Moon ZombieBill MoseleyThe murderous, backwoods Firefly family take to the road to escape the vengeful Sheriff Wydell, who is not afraid of being as ruthless as his target.Damn, this far exceeded my expectations for a Rob Zombie film. It's an exciting road trip movie with plenty of violence and psychotic yet sympathetic characters. A stand out horror movie. Zombie's films are largely forgettable but not this one. Not even a little bit. It's moody atmosphere is the key. Not played for laughs like some of his work or overly indulgent like most of his films.
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJohn CusackCameron DiazCatherine KeenerA puppeteer discovers a portal that leads literally into the head of movie star John Malkovich. This movie is magnificent. It's tough to describe because it's one of the most off the wall bat-s!@t crazy plots ever conceived. Imaginative and inventive film making at it's best. A must see to believe that it was actually made. You never know where this movie is headed which makes it super enjoyable.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsJeff GoldblumGeena DavisJohn GetzA brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.Be afraid. This is the epitome of "body horror". No need for CGI, this film is full of some of the best practical effects and costumes you'll see and they still hold up to this day. One of David Cronenberg's finest achievements. Just wow...be very afraid.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsIsabella RosselliniKyle MacLachlanDennis HopperThe discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.Voyeurism, singing, warm beer and not your standard damsel in distress. Weird for the sake of being weird? Possibly. A dark and twisted take on a small town boy who happens upon a mystery that stems from an ear covered with ants in a field that he subsequently brings to the local police's attention. Arguably David Lynch's best film but no disputing that it has Dennis Hopper's greatest performance ever. He might tell you not too look at him but it's impossible not to.
- DirectorMichael SpierigPeter SpierigStarsEthan HawkeWillem DafoeSam NeillIn the year 2019, a plague has transformed almost every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind. While many vampire films can typically follow the same horror tropes, this is an inventive and original take on one of horror's classic monsters. Great cast and amazing action. A stand out horror gem.
- DirectorMark NeveldineBrian TaylorStarsJason StathamAmy SmartCarlos SanzProfessional assassin Chev Chelios learns his rival has injected him with a poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops.A guilty pleasure action movie that plays like a video game. It's one of the most visually unique movies of it's kind. A very rare example of hyper editing working well. And the sequel ain't too bad either.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMichael DouglasDeborah Kara UngerSean PennAfter a wealthy San Francisco banker is given an opportunity to participate in a mysterious game, his life is turned upside down as he begins to question if it might really be a concealed conspiracy to destroy him.David Fincher is well known today for "Gone Girl", "The Social Network", "Benjamin Button" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" but this is an early film in his career that is also one of his best. A psychological thriller that is genuinely mysterious and constantly taking turns at unexpected points. Michael Douglas gives a pitch perfect performance as does Sean Penn, who may not have much screen time but steals every scene he's in.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyo IshibashiEihi ShiinaTetsu SawakiA widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.Well it starts out innocently enough but quickly becomes one of the more disturbing horror movies I've ever seen. There are several parts that are uncomfortable to watch and will make you feel like 'maybe I shouldn't be watching this' but it's one you'll never forget.
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsTatsuya FujiwaraAki MaedaTarô YamamotoIn the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill one another under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act. This can be a tough watch. Simply put this is the original "Hunger Games" before that was even a thing. But it's far more creative and gruesome. Seek it out.
- DirectorAlbert HughesAllen HughesStarsJohnny DeppHeather GrahamIan HolmAfter five ritualistic murders are committed in 1888 London, Inspector Abberline's assignment is to investigate the "Jack the Ripper" murders. Along with a string of mutilated prostitutes, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the government. An inventive. interesting and unique take on Jack the Ripper, the original serial killer. Some of the English accents could use some work but it's visually stunning violence and twisting story-line more than make up for that.
Side Note: adapted from the graphic novel of the same name. - DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsPatrick SwayzeKeanu ReevesGary BuseyAn F.B.I. Agent goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers. It's a tale old as time...undercover FBI agent learning how to surf while simultaneously infiltrating a gang of bank robbers that like wearing masks of former Presidents during their heists and have a penchant for extreme sports. Sign me up. While it might sound like a macho man type of movie it comes from a very gifted female director who would go on to win a well deserved Academy award ("The Hurt Locker") later in her career. Needlessly and poorly re-made a couple years ago. If there's nothing new or more to say with a premise then why re-do it? it. Stick with the original.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsAlec BaldwinGeena DavisMichael KeatonThe spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out. Before Michael Keaton was Batman or Birdman he was the ghost with the most. So is this the best haunted house movie ever? Well if you like the strange and unusual with your spooks than this is for you. One of Tim Burton's best, prior to putting Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp in everyone of his films. Great score and practical effects bring even more to the table. Honestly not sure how this got a PG rating...because it has one of the best F-Bombs ever. Seriously. EVER.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderPenélope CruzCameron DiazA lawyer finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking.Often considered a dud in regards to the works of director Ridley Scott. I would instead argue that this is a film that while heavily criticized on its release is full of such charismatic and bizarre performances from a fine ensemble cast that you'll never be bored and you'll often be surprised. The story never stops keeping your attention with it's twisting plot and gruesome stylized violence. There are things in this movie that you won't see anywhere else...I promise.
- DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.A truly scary film for real horror fans. Every once in awhile a film comes along that redefines it's genre. In this case it's the supernatural horror variety. It's an expertly made film that is endlessly clever, doesn't rely on cheap jump scares and is genuinely unsettling to watch at times.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsDenzel WashingtonChristopher WalkenDakota FanningIn Mexico City, a former CIA operative swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.Denzel Washington and Tony Scott have made 5 films together. This is the best of that bunch from an incredible actor and influential director. It's brutal and unrelenting and I absolutely love it. It's emotionally powerful and gripping while also featuring fantastic stylish shots, a very talented ensemble cast and vicious but realistic violence and action.
- DirectorBen StillerStarsBen StillerOwen WilsonChristine TaylorAt the end of his career, a clueless fashion model is brainwashed to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.Easily the best film ever made about the modeling industry. Also it's absolutely hilarious. Hysterical sight gags and seemingly endless quotable dialogue. Don't let the disappointing and unnecessary sequel tarnish this comedic gold mine.
- DirectorFrank OzStarsBill MurrayRichard DreyfussJulie HagertyA successful psychotherapist loses his mind after one of his most dependent patients, an obsessive-compulsive neurotic, tracks him down during his family vacation. My personal favorite in terms of Bill Murray's comedic roles. It's just brilliant and unexpected humor that doesn't need to stoop to profanity and toilet humor for jokes. Very quotable film.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsAnton YelchinImogen PootsAlia ShawkatA punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.One of the most intense films I've seen. It's an original and exciting story of an indie punk band trapped by neo-nazis skinheads lead by Sir Patrick Stewart. A departure for him in terms of roles but one he owns like only he can. This movie delivers the tension.
- DirectorPedro AlmodóvarStarsAntonio BanderasElena AnayaJan CornetA brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. An absolute must see intriguing thriller. Genuinely unsettling at times but impossible to look away. Antonio Banderas gets to show us how well he can tackle a disturbing and dramatic role. You'll be so immersed in the story and it's hypnotic visuals that you won't even notice that it's in Spanish.
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsJohn TravoltaNancy AllenJohn LithgowA movie sound recordist accidentally records the evidence that proves that a car accident was actually murder and consequently finds himself in danger.Brian DePalma is an acclaimed director and rightfully so ("Scarface" anyone?) But this seems to be a forgotten classic. This is such a great film. The direction is immaculate, the performances are amazing and the story will keep you guessing. It's like taking a classic Alfred Hitchock premise but mixing it with a heavy dose of the '80's (in a good way). John Travolta's best dramatic role ever.
- DirectorMichael PowellStarsKarlheinz BöhmAnna MasseyMoira ShearerA young man murders women, using a movie camera to film their dying expressions of terror. It's exactly what you think a murder-thriller based on voyeurism would be like and then some. But it was made decades (probably) before you were born. Controversial on release this movie was truly ahead of it's time. This inspired countless films like it but you can't beat the real thing. It packs one hell of a punch.
- DirectorBruce RobinsonStarsJohnny DeppGiovanni RibisiAaron EckhartAmerican journalist Paul Kemp takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1960s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the expatriates who live there. This is just such a fun film to watch. It's very clever and very funny. So while Depp previously and realistically portrayed Hunter S. Thompson in "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" (another cult classic) this was based on an unpublished novel he had written. You can truly see his acting talent shine on display here, let's face it he can sometimes really phone in his performance or sleepwalk through a film. This is a film Depp was passionate about making and it shows. Good stuff.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA struggling screenwriter inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.One part story about writer's block, one part kidnapped dog ransom movie and loads of dark humor with excellent stylized violence. It's unusual but these might be the most like-able and watchable seven psychopaths ever convened into one very enjoyable film. It's that damn good.
- DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsVal KilmerVincent D'OnofrioAdam GoldbergAfter a tragic incident, a man drifts into a world populated by thugs and speed junkies. There are many 'man looks for wife's killer' movies, lots of them. This is an exceptional one. A strong. deep and engrossing mystery. This one will keep you hooked with eccentric characters and a fantastic plot. The plot circles around drugs but doesn't glorify them nor does it judge those that indulge. Val Kilmer gives an amazing performance as a tortured soul of man who seemingly lost his life and his identity when he lost his wife.
- DirectorNimród AntalStarsKate BeckinsaleLuke WilsonFrank WhaleyStranded in an isolated motel, a couple become the unsuspecting subjects of a snuff film. This could easily be dismissed as a standard horror slasher film. But compelling performances, a disturbing twisted plot and exceptional direction make this so much more. It's soo good because the characters behave in a realistic fashion given the strange situation they're thrown into. It's scary because of the tension created and doesn't rely on cheap scares or a huge body count.
- DirectorRobert RodriguezEli RothQuentin TarantinoStarsKurt RussellRose McGowanDanny TrejoQuentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's homage to exploitation double features in the '60s and '70s with two back-to-back cult films that include previews of coming attractions between them. This is a movie not just watched but you experience. You have two brilliantly trashy films from two incredibly talented directors that are sandwiched in with the best faux trailers ever, it's soo good that a couple of the fake previews become actual fully developed movies in their own right. A great double feature with some really fun goodies in the mix.
Side note: while the films are available individually, it's best seen as one. Especially because you'll miss out on most of the trailers which were expertly made by some fine directors. - DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsJoaquin PhoenixJosh BrolinOwen WilsonIn 1970, drug-fueled Los Angeles private investigator Larry "Doc" Sportello investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend.A brilliant and humorous pseudo-noir mystery with an exceptional ensemble cast and one of modern cinemas most gifted directors who I personally think is a bit over rated but this one's a keeper. For sure. Good stuff, hope he makes more films like this.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsPam GrierSamuel L. JacksonRobert ForsterA flight attendant with a criminal past gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling. Under pressure to become an informant against the illegal arms dealer she works for, she must find a way to secure her future without getting killed. It seems that this gem becomes overshadowed sometimes by Tarantino's other films. But it's easily one of his best. It's got all his classic elements: smart and witty dialogue, unique characters, a constantly weaving plot and his trademark violence. Plus it has that classic "Tarantino" soundtrack filled with some truly wonderful tunes.
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsPaul ReubensElizabeth DailyMark HoltonWhen eccentric man-child Pee-wee Herman gets his beloved bike stolen in broad daylight, he sets out across the U.S. on the adventure of his life.A man-child on an epic quest to reclaim his prized bicycle. Full of some of the strangest and most brilliant characters you'll ever see. It's quirky in the best ways and it's humor is wonderfully off-beat and bizarre. Needs to be seen for the opening breakfast scene alone...and just gets better.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.I think it might be against the law to make a list of cult movies and not include this. It wasn't too warmly received when initially released it has since spawned numerous books, annual conventions and a notoriously hilarious edited for television version. Lots has been said and written about it. It's one of the ultimate cult films.
- DirectorAdam WingardStarsDan StevensSheila KelleyMaika MonroeA soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence. It's a nice little flick that you will not see coming. It doesn't pull any punches and doesn't play by the rules. A true exercise in the horror that war can create but not on the battle fields. Exceptional script, cast and direction.
- DirectorSylvester StalloneStarsSylvester StalloneJulie BenzMatthew MarsdenIn Thailand, John Rambo joins a group of mercenaries to venture into war-torn Burma, and rescue a group of Christian aid workers who were kidnapped by the ruthless local infantry unit.John Rambo is an interesting and iconic film character. My first association with Rambo (which was the second & third movies, video games, cartoons, action figures, etc.) was as an over the top one man army in a foreign country winning unbeatable wars and saving American hostages. Then I saw "First Blood"....It's a gritty and realistic thriller on US soil. Yes, he's a one man army but he's going against a local police department that doesn't want a returning soldier in their town. It really surprised me the first time I saw it and remains a gripping action classic, plus it contains Stallone's best dramatic scene he's ever done. So I just wrote a paragraph about a movie that's not even on this list. My point is that he seemed to be a different person in each movie. And then for many years I forgot about those movies.
Then this 4th installment seemingly arrived out of the blue. And just wow...this is probably the most graphically violent movie I've ever seen. Rambo seems to be a broken version of the cartoon character he had become. This is a most welcomed return to form. The horrors of war are seen on multiple levels and from various points of view. It is a brutally beautiful film, it has the perfect blend of some of the over the top violence these films are known for and the gritty realistic aspects that it originated in. (Spoiler: in the novel that "First Blood" was based on Rambo dies). From a technical stand point many would argue that this is not the best Rambo movie, but they would be wrong. For a character who was suppose to die this is the best alternative way to conclude his story. - DirectorSam MendesStarsTom HanksTyler HoechlinPaul NewmanA mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road, and his father down a path of redemption and revenge.A stylish period movie where the ever lovable Tom Hanks is a mob enforcer? Bingo. A brilliant and beautiful film that focuses on the father-son relationship with a heavy dose of violence and a heavier dose of compelling performances from a great ensemble cast.
Side note: Many people might not know that this is actually based on a graphic novel. - DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodBee VangChristopher CarleyAfter a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie...and I honestly can't really describe why. I just absolutely love this film and it was an instant masterpiece after I saw it for the first (of many) time. It's a drama that at it's core is simply about an individual grumpy man's version of 'family' evolving and changing. But it masterfully mixes family relations, race relations, intense drama with some well placed humor. I just hope that as both an actor and a director that this priceless film doesn't get lost in the vast shuffle of Mr. Eastwood's filmography.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJerry LewisDiahnne AbbottA passionate yet unsuccessful comedian stalks and kidnaps his idol to take the spotlight for himself. This prominent actor and acclaimed director have worked on several films together and they're all great. But this one seems to get forgotten which is understandable given some of the other movies they've done. This is just more proof that these two can do any kind of movie together not just violent ones. This a must see for fans of dark humor.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsBrandon RouthKevin SpaceyKate BosworthSuperman returns to Earth after spending five years in space examining his homeworld Krypton. But he finds things have changed while he was gone, and he must once again prove himself important to the world. An under appreciated and often over looked comic book super hero movie. Superman's track record when it comes to films is all over the place, and this flick seems to get forgotten in a time where Superman is now dead after killing countless people in epic battles with General Zod, facing off against Batman, then teaming together because their mother's are both named Martha and finally sacrificing himself to kill Doomsday. And before all that nonsense Christopher Reeve was best known as the man of steel who started off the franchise strong with it's first two films by Richard Donner and then got ridiculous with the second two.
In hindsight this a breath of fresh air for the Christ-like alien from krypton. Sure this movie has it's problems but it's a very interesting take on Superman. It makes the odd decision of being a sequel to a couple movies made decades earlier and ignoring the last two Superman movies that were released. But it works and it works well. Although it may be lacking in the action department it has some great ideas like Supes being a pseudo-stalker of Lois Lane and fathering a child with her. But Singer's direction and a stand out performance by Kevin Stacey as Lex Luthor (revisiting this movie is a great way to forget about Jessie Eisenberg and his jar of urine) make this one of the better Superman films. - DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackSamuel L. JacksonMary McCormackA man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror. In a world that's over saturated in adaptations of master of the macabre Stephen King's works it can be tough to stand out. But creams rises to the top and this is one of the best. The premise is pretty simple but fascinating and it's executed marvelously. Relies on tension and mystery for it's scares not mindless gore.

Like to make lists? check. And outstanding film that is intriguing and witty. Might be the best use of Jack Black as well. - DirectorStuart GordonStarsJeffrey CombsBruce AbbottBarbara CramptonAfter an odd new medical student arrives on campus, a dedicated local and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue. Most under rated horror comedy of the '80s if not of all time. It's violent and bloody but also very comical. Jt knows what it is and doesn't hide it. Based very loosely on the works of H.P .Lovecraft. Stuart Gordon cemented himself as a talented director with this little nugget.
- DirectorAdam GreenStarsShawn AshmoreEmma BellKevin ZegersThree skiers stranded on a chairlift are forced to make life-or-death choices, which prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death.Realistic horror movies are very rare. Very very rare. A realistic horror movie staring three college students trapped on a ski lift is extraordinarily rare. This is one of the best. Well it's definitely the best. It's a scenario that anyone that's gone skiing has probably thought of at one time or another. This movie is extremely intense. It's truly scary because of the realistic decisions these characters make and the consequences that follow.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsGeorge ClooneyMark WahlbergIce CubeIn the aftermath of the Persian Gulf War, four soldiers set out to steal gold that was stolen from Kuwait, but they discover people who desperately need their help.Best serious yet comical movie about war I've seen. It's not slapstick silly funny nor is it an extremely serious graphic depiction of war. It's one of a kind leaning more towards a realistic movie but plenty of humor for levity. Excellent cast (even Ice Cube) with an excellent script and director.
Side note: Spike Jonze known mainly as a director and producer ("Her" the "Jackass" franchise) of a couple of great films and dozens of the most inventive music videos ever steals every scene he's in with his comedic acting chops. Skilled behind and in front of the camera. - DirectorMalcolm D. But seriously this is a sick. twisted and violent movie that's open to interpretation. This falls squarely in the you love it or you hate it type of films. Honestly most people probably won't like it. But it's something like you've never seen and you'll never forget. - DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare. An intense psycho-sexual thriller set in the world of professional and cut throat ballet. Beautifully blurs the lines of reality.
Amazing performances from an exceptional cast. Goes along nicely in the same vein of "the Wrestler". Both tales of performers who use their body and movements to tell a story for a paying audience. Two sides of the same coin? - DirectorPierre MorelStarsLiam NeesonMaggie GraceFamke JanssenA retired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been kidnapped while on a trip to Paris. This movie single handily solidified Liam Neeson as one of the best action leads in modern films. He expertly handles the drama and intensity of the story as well as the phenomenal action sequences. He's done action before this and after this but this is the only must see.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.Director Frank Darabont had previously adapted two classic Stephen King tales into unforgettable films. One of which is heralded as one of the best movies ever made. Ever. So he goes to tap that well of Stephen King's material once again. He decides to venture out of the setting of period prison films into something that would be considered a more typical horror movie. A mist full of deadly creatures trap a group of people in a prison that's taken the shape of a supermarket. Tempers flair, people butt heads and a gripping story begins to unfold which has an ending that is radically different from it's source material but in King's own words is better than what he had originally written. How often does an author say that about an adaptation of his/her work. Um...never. Great film and worth watching in full color and in black and white as it was originally conceived.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittLukas HaasEmilie de RavinA teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.An excellent neo-noire mystery set in high school. Such a great who done it flick with an amazing cast, talented director and plot that digs its hooks into you and pulls you through a spider web of deceit, drugs and shady characters. It's one part "Chinatown" and one part "Beverley Hills 90210". Check it out.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsKevin SpaceyGabriel ByrneChazz PalminteriThe sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.All-star cast and an incredible mystery. There's nothing usual here, excuse the bad pun. This is the heist movie that will stick with you and you'll want to revisit. If you've never seen it don't check out anything that might ruin one of the best plot twists ever in cinema. It's really that damn good.

Delivers the gore and the laughs. - DirectorAndrew NiccolStarsJustin TimberlakeAmanda SeyfriedCillian MurphyIn a future where people stop aging at 25, but are engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. Will Salas is accused of murder and on the run with a hostage.I avoided this movie because I judged a book by it's cover. Sci-fi action thriller where the minutes and hours of your life are literally currency that people will kill for. That sounds interesting, oh but it's got Justin Timberlake in it. No thanks. I was wrong. Not only does the fast paced plot keep you fully engaged but JT holds his own, Amanda S does her thing and Cillian Murphy steals the show. It's well written, well acted and wonderfully directed. The visuals are soo good that you could turn off the sound and watch it.
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever. This some how manages to be the most unique and wonderful romantic comedy/drama ever but also the most depressing. Anyone who has ever gone through the break up of a serious relationship will identify with this film. Easily one of Jim Carrey's best roles. He masterfully handles the mix of drama and restrained humor.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsMatt DamonHeath LedgerMonica BellucciWill and Jake Grimm are traveling con-artists who encounter a genuine fairy-tale curse which requires true courage instead of their usual bogus exorcisms. While it may not be visionary director Terry Gilliam's best or most popular film it's certainly a winner. Who doesn't love a good fairy tale or two or three..
Visually stunning and featuring two amazing performances from the aptly titled brothers (Damon & Ledger) - DirectorMary HarronStarsChristian BaleJustin TherouxJosh LucasA wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies. The condescending attitude of the 1980's as seen through the eyes of a serial killer. Or is it just the sick fantasies of an extremely disturbed individual? It's extremely humerus and also filled with explicitly stylized violence and lots of blood. It's such a unique and twisted tale of insanity and vanity.
- DirectorTroy DuffyStarsWillem DafoeSean Patrick FlaneryNorman ReedusTwo Irish Catholic brothers become vigilantes and wipe out Boston's criminal underworld in the name of God.So this director is the ultimate one trick pony/one hit wonder. But it's a damn fine motion picture. The plot pulls you in, the characters are strange but extremely like-able and the violence is not only graphic but very creative. This movie is all kinds of awesome but the sequel sucks and the director hasn't made anything else worth watching. Thankfully the cast didn't suffer the same fate. The writer/director clearly threw together every good idea and element of a great movie that he had into this flick which makes it stand out but it seems that he only had enough good content for one movie.
- DirectorJohn DahlStarsMatt DamonEdward NortonGretchen MolA young, reformed gambler must return to playing high stakes poker to help a friend pay off loan sharks, while balancing his relationship with his girlfriend and his commitments to law school.I don't particularly like poker. It's fine but not my favorite card game or ideal choice for the premise of a film. But damn this a great drama. The story pulls you in from glitzy casinos to underground card games. The cast is top notch and deliver fantastic performances all around (even Matt Damon). You don't need to like poker or know anything about it to enjoy this film. It's that good.
- DirectorJody HillStarsSeth RogenAnna FarisRay LiottaBi-polar mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt is called into action to stop a flasher from turning shopper's paradise into his personal peep show. But when Barnhardt can't bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective is recruited to close the case. This movie is very funny but the style and tone of the humor is pretty dark. If you can handle male nudity, jokes about mental illness, substance abuse and unusually graphic violence then you'll dig this movie. But if that Kevin James mall security guard film is more your style then this is not the mall security guard movie (I guess that's a genre now) for you. But if you like your coffee and your humor black then definitely check this out.
Side note/warning: there is a scene that borders on rape that's played for laughs. - DirectorDavid Gordon GreenStarsJonah HillAri GraynorSam RockwellA college student on suspension is coaxed into babysitting the kids next door, though he is fully unprepared for the wild night ahead of him.The humor can be lewd and crude but the characters are soo eccentric that it's a comedic goldmine. Jonah Hill plays the sitter but he is actually one of the weaker points of this film. The kids he's watching and the drug dealer he encounters steal the show. Very very funny.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsElle FanningChristina HendricksKeanu ReevesAn aspiring model, Jesse, is new to Los Angeles. However, her beauty and youth, which generate intense fascination and jealousy within the fashion industry, may prove themselves sinister. This is another love it or hate it. It's a hypnotically and beautifully shot film but it's twisted in ways that are unimaginable and unforgettable. Instant classic.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellEmbeth DavidtzMarcus GilbertWhen Ash Williams is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., he must retrieve the Necronomicon and battle an army of the dead in order to return home. The "Evil Dead" series gets lots of deserved love. But in the midst of all that love the original film, it's re-imagining, the comics and now TV series over shadow part three. Just because it doesn't have "Evil Dead" in the title this is an epic film. Slapstick humor, violence, gore are all on display in this criminally under-rated masterpiece of a the beloved franchise.
Side note: There are many versions of this film available due to many different factors most involving the studio not approving of certain aspects of the film. It's all good but the bootleg/director's cut with the original ending is the must see.
