- DirectorJohn SchlesingerStarsJulie ChristieDirk BogardeLaurence HarveyBeautiful but amoral model Diana Scott sleeps her way to the top of the London fashion scene at the height of the Swinging Sixties. This gem of a film has grown in relevance since the first time I saw it and Julie Christie's performance went from great to monumental. Also it made me revisit John Schlesinger's films. Extraordinary.
- DirectorMichael CiminoStarsClint EastwoodJeff BridgesGeorge KennedyWith the help of an irreverent young sidekick, a bank robber gets his old gang back together to organize a daring new heist. That heterosexual intimacy between a superlative Jeff Bridges and a startling Clint Eastwood, escaped me completely the first time around, but now, it's there, all over the place. Michael Cimino's first film. I wonder if this was in the director's mind.
- DirectorMartin DonovanStarsHart BochnerColin FirthDora BryanIn early 1980s Buenos Aires, a struggling movie theater owner takes in a roommate but suspects he is responsible for a series of political assassinations.I remembered it as an "art" film. Intriguing but not more than that. The main reason I wanted to see it again was to see Colin Firth in his 20's. Wow. What a surprise. What a movie! It went over my head the first time. It is a totally original thriller, a psycho sexual socio political thriller if you please. Perverse and profoundly human at the same time. With a smart, elegant, creepy and very funny script. Colin Firth is spectacular. Spec-ta-cu -lar! Hart Bochner and the rest of the eclectic cast (Liz Smith and Dora Bryan, Fabrizio Bentivoglio....)makes this film a precious collector's item.
- DirectorRobert EnricoStarsAlain DelonLino VenturaJoanna ShimkusBest friends become aware of a crashed plane lying on the bottom of the ocean, allegedly stuffed with wealth. Adventurers set off in search of prey. And along with them, Letizia is linked, with whom both friends are secretly in love.Alain Delon, Lino Ventura and Joanna Shimkus (Mrs Sidney Poitier) took me for an intoxicating ride, by sea. Love and friendship. I was surprised how well I remembered. A scrumptious dessert of a movie.
- DirectorRichard FleischerStarsOrson WellesDean StockwellDiane VarsiTwo wealthy law-school students go on trial for murder in this version of the Leopold-Loeb case.Dean Stockwell, Dean Stockwell, Dean Stockwell....He's mesmerizing. His performance alone keeps the film fresh and alive. Orson Welles is another plus in the second part of the movie.
- DirectorVittorio De SicaStarsSophia LorenMarcello MastroianniAldo PuglisiWealthy businessman Domenico and penniless prostitute Filumena share a large part of their lives in post-WWII Italy.Sophia Loren is magnificent and the film, from a play by Edoardo De Filippo, it's a a sociological document of its day. Marcello Mastroianni's character is a brutal if affectionate look at the man from the past. Still around but slowly disappearing.
- DirectorLindsay AndersonStarsMalcolm McDowellRalph RichardsonRachel RobertsAn ambitious coffee salesman has a series of improbable and ironic adventures that seem designed to challenge his naive idealism.I had to see it it twice on the same day. Once for me and then to show it to friends who had never seen it.
