Romcom
Romantic comedies, plain and simple. Obviously most have some dramatic elements, but these are mostly lighthearted and not as heavy as the films in the "Romance" list

- DirectorGary WinickStarsJennifer GarnerMark RuffaloJudy GreerUnpopular schoolgirl Jenna Rink makes an unusual wish on her birthday. Miraculously, her wish comes true and the 13-year-old Jenna wakes up the next day as a 30-year-old woman. Also in my Top 10
One of my most rewatched movies, it gave me a lifelong appreciation for Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. Still gives me hope to this day that life can turn out all right, even though I know it's just a movie - DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.I've seen more references to this than I ever knew; very influential for the genre from what I can tell, and it has a charm and eloquence to its storytelling as well (tohugh the plot moved a bit quick and then dragged at various points)
"Inconceivable" from Vincini is an iconic quote and the scene where Inigo Montoya takes his revenge gives me chills - DirectorWilliam WylerStarsGregory PeckAudrey HepburnEddie AlbertA bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome.Genuinely fantastic performance from Audrey Hepburn, though Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert were great as well. It was a fun watch with several amusing moments (which I thought wouldn't land due to the age gap), but I enjoyed the film as a whole thoroughly. Poignant ending.
Watched October 18th, 2019 - DirectorWoody AllenStarsWoody AllenDiane KeatonTony RobertsAlvy Singer, a divorced Jewish comedian, reflects on his relationship with ex-lover Annie Hall, an aspiring nightclub singer, which ended abruptly just like his previous marriages. This had quirky sensibilities and innovative stylistic decisions (fourth wall breaks, the animated portion, the scene where he talks to people on the street, etc.) that were groundbreaking for the time. The dark and neurotic humor from Warhol's character was amusing, and I overall liked the acting. Pretty cool film, considering I thought it would be overhyped
Watched February 9th, 2019 - DirectorGregory La CavaStarsWilliam PowellCarole LombardAlice BradyA scatterbrained socialite hires a vagrant as a family butler - but there's more to Godfrey than meets the eye.I was really shocked by this. Not only did its statements on class seem all too prescient today, the witty dialogue and distinct characters made it a treat to watch. Great performances from the entire cast
Watched October 18, 2020 - DirectorMike NewellStarsHugh GrantAndie MacDowellJames FleetOver the course of five social occasions, a committed bachelor must consider the notion that he may have discovered love. This apparently set many precedents for the genre going forward. I appreciated the flashes of witty dialogue and the fact that the entire cast felt sufficiently unique, despite most of them getting fairly little screentime. All around a solid watch
Watched September 8th, 2019 - DirectorAutumn de WildeStarsAnya Taylor-JoyJohnny FlynnMia GothIn 1800s England, a well meaning but selfish young woman meddles in the love lives of her friends.I found the trailer for this so compelling that I read the book in a mad dash to see the movie in limited release. It was nice to see the characters come to life, and it greatly amplified the comedy of the original novel. The cinematography had great framing shots of Anya Taylor-Joy and the scenery in general, and I greatly enjoyed the soundtrack and costumes. Solid performances from all involved (Bill Nighy and Miranda Hart as Mr. Woodhouse and Miss Bates were of particular note), but obviously I enjoyed Anya Taylor-Joy as well.
Watched March 1st, 2020 in theaters - DirectorRob ReinerStarsBilly CrystalMeg RyanCarrie FisherHarry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship.I really liked the structure of this movie (chance encounters eventually blossoming into something more, broken up by true stories of romance), and felt that the comedy was probably the strongest part (the moaning deli scene, fast-talking quips, etc.) Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal both had good performances, but I had trouble believing their romantic chemistry after so much of the film had been trying to prove the opposite hypothesis (that men and women can be friends). That being said, the final scene was sweet and I overall enjoyed this.
Watched November 17, 2023 - DirectorFred WolfStarsAnna FarisColin HanksEmma StoneAfter Playboy bunny Shelley is kicked out of the Playboy Mansion, she finds a job as the house mother for a sorority full of socially awkward girls.Rewatched this several times; probably rated a bit too high, but I liked the cast and I think it was a good movie for girl power
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsNicholas HoultTeresa PalmerJohn MalkovichAfter a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.I liked this more than I thought, because I still remember a decent amount. One of the most original thoughts for a movie I've seen in the past ten years, and seeing Nicholas Hoult later on in Skins (though he was younger then) was cool
- DirectorAnne FletcherStarsSandra BullockRyan ReynoldsMary SteenburgenA pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.Watched in theaters
Was a lighthearted watch, I enjoyed it a lot (namely because Sandra Bullock was one of my favorite actresses at the time) - DirectorJon M. ChuStarsConstance WuHenry GoldingMichelle YeohThis contemporary romantic comedy based on a global bestseller follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's family. This was surprisingly pretty good, other than the horribly generic lines scattered throughout (mostly by the character Nick); the burn that Astrid gave her husband (something like"I've been trying to help you feel like a man, but I can't make you something you're not") felt a bit cliched but was very satisfying. The plot twist was actually unexpected (though that may be because I didn't expect one in a romcom). The (assumedly) Mandarin remixes used for the soundtrack were really cool, and I liked the trap song quite a bit. Overall, a serviceable film that displayed its opulence well
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsAdam SandlerDrew BarrymoreRob SchneiderHenry Roth is a man afraid of commitment until he meets the beautiful Lucy. They hit it off and Henry think he's finally found the girl of his dreams until discovering she has short-term memory loss and forgets him the next day.Probably Adam Sandler's best movie. Heartwarming without being over-the-top cheesy
- DirectorPreston SturgesStarsBarbara StanwyckHenry FondaCharles CoburnA trio of classy card sharks targets a socially awkward brewery heir, until one of them falls in love with him.I liked the two leads in this and the "mind games" played by the swindlers, but I thought that the resolution was a bit confusing.
Watched October 16, 2020 - DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsAnne HathawayNicholas GalitzineElla RubinSolène, a 40-year-old single mom, begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet.I watched this solely because Anne Hathaway looks so cute in the poster haha. Basically every plot beat in this feels like fanfiction (which it is apparently based on), but the overall story is cute and sincere, though many of the complexities of a relationship with fame or an age-gap are only explored at a surface level. Anne is absolutely phenomenal in this and sells every scene with genuine emotion, and Nicholas Galitzine was good as well (though his character was drastically underdeveloped).
Watched May 2, 2024 - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsBradley CooperJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroAfter a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.Another one that deals with some heavy themes, but it has a hopeful tone and sarcastic sense of humor. It was all right, I watched it at a movie night
- DirectorGarry MarshallStarsJulia RobertsJamie FoxxAnne HathawayIntertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine's Day.Watched in theaters
An ensemble cast; it struggled to give everyone a satisfying development and conclusion, but it was inoffensive and entertaining for the most part - DirectorEdward ZwickStarsJake GyllenhaalAnne HathawayJudy GreerIn 1990s Pittsburgh, a medicine peddler starts a relationship with a young woman suffering from Parkinson's disease. This definitely got pretty heavy towards the end, and it arguably belongs in the "Romance" list, but it had a snarky sense of humor throughout, so I think it's more fitting here. It was pretty good, and had some interesting commentary on sickness and its toll on the unafflicted partner
- DirectorNorman JewisonStarsCherNicolas CageOlympia DukakisLoretta Castorini, a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother of the man she has agreed to marry.I enjoyed the depiction of Italian-American life and I was impressed with Cher's acting, but the plot created intrigue and then dropped it pretty much immediately (the hand maiming, infidelity, etc.)
Watched April 6th, 2019 - DirectorJoel ZwickStarsNia VardalosJohn CorbettMichael ConstantineA young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity.I wanted to watch this with the 3rd coming out soon, and I had seen the vegetarian joke in a clip. It was a decent time with some fine commentary on fitting into one's culture and celebrating differences, but there weren't as many laughable moments as I had expected. I might continue the series but thought this was mostly only okay
Watched June 18, 2023 with family - DirectorSharon MaguireStarsRenée ZellwegerColin FirthHugh GrantBridget Jones is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary. This was okay; I watched it after Pride and Prejudice, so it as a bit lackluster. Grant did a great job at getting me to hate him, and the "All By Myself" scene has been parodied countless times (iconic), but the rest of it wasn't particularly noteworthy
- DirectorAndy TennantStarsReese WitherspoonPatrick DempseyJosh LucasA young woman who has reinvented herself as a New York City socialite must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband after seven years of separation.I liked Reese Witherspoon a lot in this, but I don't think the movie itself was actually all that great
- DirectorNancy MeyersStarsJack NicholsonDiane KeatonKeanu ReevesA swinger on the cusp of being a senior citizen with a taste for young women falls in love with an accomplished woman closer to his age.Watched this when I was young; it was interesting to see the take on finding love "past your prime"
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsCary GrantRosalind RussellRalph BellamyA newspaper editor uses every trick in the book to keep his ace reporter ex-wife from remarrying.I was wholly unenthused with this film. While its cast was solid, I didn't find the plot engaging but that may be due to the time since its premiere.
Watched October 17, 2020 - DirectorGarry MarshallStarsSarah Jessica ParkerJessica BielAshton KutcherThe lives of several couples and singles in New York City intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve.Another ensemble cast. I liked this because Ludacris' role in the film seemed so random that I thought it was funny. Definitely the weaker of the two
- DirectorGlenn FicarraJohn RequaStarsSteve CarellRyan GoslingJulianne MooreA middle-aged husband's life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a newfound friend, Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars.I don't really remember this much, but it had an air of pretentiousness that I didn't really like. Almost like it was trying too hard to be profound/a classic
- DirectorGary WinickStarsKate HudsonAnne HathawayCandice BergenTwo best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day. This had some pretty intense melodrama towards the end, but it was inoffensive otherwise.
Watched in theaters - DirectorJohn FordStarsJohn WayneMaureen O'HaraBarry FitzgeraldA retired American boxer returns to the village of his birth in 1920s Ireland, where he falls for a spirited redhead whose brother is contemptuous of their union.Beautiful scenery shots but easily could have been cut down by up to 45 minutes without losing anything from its plot. Despite its drags, it was mostly charming
Watched February 24th, 2019 - DirectorNora EphronStarsNicole KidmanWill FerrellShirley MacLaineThinking he can overshadow an unknown actress in the part, an egocentric actor unknowingly gets a witch cast in an upcoming television remake of the classic sitcom Bewitched (1964).I liked the leads and its sense of whimsy, but nothing else really stood out.
Watched in theaters - DirectorDavid McNallyStarsPiper PeraboAdam GarciaJohn GoodmanAspiring songwriter Violet Sanford, after getting a job at a women-run NYC bar that teases its male patrons, comes out of her shell.I saw this once when I was very young; don't remember much, but it was decent
Also cool to see Tyra in something other than America's Next Top Model - DirectorPaul WeilandStarsPatrick DempseyMichelle MonaghanKevin McKiddHannah surprises Tom, her best friend who is secretly in love with her, with the news of her engagement to a wealthy man. Things take a complicated turn when she asks Tom to be her maid of honor.Watched on some lazy Saturday. I remember hating Dempsey's character in this but not much else
- DirectorMark WatersStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerEmma StoneWhile attending his brother's wedding, a serial womanizer is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends. This turned me off of Matthew McCoaughey until I saw True Detective years later. Its saving grace was Jennifer Garner
- DirectorMcGStarsReese WitherspoonChris PineTom HardyC.I.A. operatives wage an epic battle on each other when they discover they are dating the same woman.Way too over-the-top and didn't really have anything interesting to offer aside from its cast. I liked Witherspoon, but I didn't think either of the male leads (their characters, that is) were particularly compelling; the ending was pretty bad as well
- DirectorAndy TennantStarsWill SmithEva MendesKevin JamesA smooth-talking man falls for a hardened columnist while helping a shy accountant woo a beautiful heiress.Arguably my least favorite movie of all time. I like Will Smith and Kevin James, but I went in expecting a super fun comedy and ended up with a mix of lazy melodrama and contrived laughs. The only good scene was where James danced to "Yeah" by Usher
