- DirectorJake Wade WallStarsAvery AtchleySavannah AtchleyMarilyn BaxterIn January, 1996 Unsolved Mysteries featured a story on landowner Bert Wall's 'real-life' interactions with the spirits that roamed the Devil's Backbone. Nearly twenty years later, Wall passed away...leaving behind only fragmented tales of an inexplicable terror to those that knew him best.So dull, so lifeless, so blah... What a waste of a film. Acting was mediocre at best and the plot has been done a thousand times over. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
- DirectorIain SoftleyStarsJulianne HoughTeddy SearsPenelope MitchellA soon-to-be bride on her way to a wedding rehearsal is having second thoughts and decides to take a detour. Car breaks down and a hitchiker offers help. Could it be fate?I didn't HATE this film by any means, but I didn't love it either. The story was pretty cliche, with maybe a tiny little twist of it's own. The acting wasn't amazing and it was neither scary nor thrilling. But with that being said, it wasn't horrible either.
- DirectorChristopher DenhamStarsWrenn SchmidtPablo SchreiberAaron StatonAn anesthesiologist must awaken her animal instincts when she, her husband and her brother-in-law become the quarry of unseen hunters who want to turn them all into trophies.Rip off of Eden Lake or what? Except, way, waaaaaay worse. Skip it and go straight to Eden Lake... trust me, you'll thank me later.
- DirectorBen StillerStarsBen StillerOwen WilsonPenélope CruzDerek and Hansel are lured into modelling again, in Rome, where they find themselves the target of a sinister conspiracy. You really can't top the first Zoolander, but this comes in as a pretty hilarious second. All the characters are as funny as you remember and it's just as cheesy as goofy and the original.
- DirectorBilly RayStarsChiwetel EjioforNicole KidmanJulia RobertsA tight-knit team of rising investigators, along with their supervisor, is suddenly torn apart when they discover that one of their own teenage daughters has been brutally murdered.Definitely a great film. Julia Roberts is absolutely fabulous, as always. She draws you into the story and her character and the film keeps you glued to the screen the entire watch. And what a twist at the end! Definitely worth a watch.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsEmily BluntJosh BrolinBenicio Del ToroAn idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico. It's been so highly praised for a reason... Amazing film. The acting is top notch on the parts of both Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Torro, as is to be expected. Tons of action and intrigue!
- DirectorLevan GabriadzeStarsHeather SossamanMatthew BohrerCourtney HalversonA group of online chatroom friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.I really had low expectations of this film to be honest, but I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it has it's cliche, cheesy moments but that's really to be expected with this type of film. It was a pretty unnerving watch and the acting wasn't horrible, although none of the characters were really likable enough to care what happens to them.
- DirectorTom McCarthyStarsMark RuffaloMichael KeatonRachel McAdamsThe true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.Amazing. Incredible. Fantastic. Take your pick. After it won best picture, I immediately watched it and understood WHY. The story is so intriguing and fantastically written. It kept my attention from the first scene to the very last. The acting was equally as amazing as the story itself. Rent it. You won't regret it.
- DirectorAtom EgoyanStarsColin FirthReese WitherspoonAlessandro NivolaThe savage murders of three young children sparks a controversial trial of three teenagers accused of killing the kids as part of a Satanic ritual. At first I was skeptical of this movie, but within 10-15 minutes of watching I was immediately sucked into the story. The acting is on point and the story is told well. I had never heard of the WM3 before this movie but it sparked my interest in the story and was thoroughly entertaining along the way.
- DirectorJoe BerlingerBruce SinofskyStarsTony BrooksDiana DavisTerry WoodA horrific triple child murder leads to an indictment and trial of three nonconformist boys based on questionable evidence. After watching the movie Devil's Knot (see above), I became totally engulfed in the real story surrounding the movie. The story of the West Memphis Three and the tragic murders of the boys is both fascinating and heartbreaking. This cult classic documentary is a well-done, enlightening look into the case and the trial surrounding the crime and conviction of the WM3. I binge watched all three of the films, which keep you updated with the story up until 2011. I highly recommend.
- DirectorJoe BerlingerBruce SinofskyStarsDamien Wayne EcholsMelissa ByersNorris DeajonThe case of the West Memphis Three, its questionable circumstances and the parties involved are followed up years later.(See Above Review)
- DirectorJoe BerlingerBruce SinofskyStarsGary GitchellTodd MooreDana MooreA further followup of the case of the West Memphis Three and the decades long fight to exonerate them that finally gained traction with new DNA evidence.(See Original Review Above)
- DirectorHadi HajaigStarsSean BeanCharlotte RamplingAbhin GaleyaA British secret service agent is faced with the task of pursuing and eliminating a British-born suicide bomber and his terrorist cell.Decent action flick with a strong political undertone. The characters are decently acted and the pace is reasonable. Not much to say about it, it's your typical entertaining action movie.
- DirectorBill CondonStarsLiam NeesonLaura LinneyChris O'DonnellA look at the life of Alfred Kinsey, a pioneer in the area of human sexuality research, whose 1948 publication "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" was one of the first recorded works that saw science address sexual behavior.JUST got around to watching this (which is embarrassing coming from a Human Sexuality student). So SO good. And not just because I'm very familiar with Kinsey, his studies, and his background. The acting is really top notch - Liam Neeson does a fabulous job as Prof. Kinsey. It's a highly entertaining film, while taking on the taboo subject of sex and the truly fascinating story of Kinsey and the work he did.
- DirectorBrenton SpencerStarsMittita BarberAslam HusainVictor Zinck Jr.In late summer of 2011, five young friends on a road trip went missing after being attacked by nomadic cannibals in a huge RV. Video was recorded by the victims & recovered by police as evidence in their still-unsolved murders.Typical "found footage" horror. I don't have an issue with them, and I can actually really enjoy one from time to time, but this was not the one. It's very average, and in no way terrifying or thrilling. There's some gross "shock" moments I guess, but nothing memorable. I don't get the really horrible rating, but I wouldn't watch it again.
- DirectorDavid GelbStarsOlivia WildeMark DuplassEvan PetersA group of medical researchers discover a way to bring dead patients back to life.Interesting idea, poor execution with holes everywhere in this movie. The acting was pretty blah, and they tried to make up for it with literally non stop action towards the end of the movie. Meh.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsAlicia VikanderDomhnall GleesonOscar IsaacA young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.What an interesting film! It was intriguing from start to finish, and had a fantastic story line, characters, and acting! It's not a thriller or anything like that, but it's extremely unsettling. I loved it!
- DirectorJason ZadaStarsNatalie DormerEoin MackenStephanie VogtA young woman's desperate search for her twin sister brings her to a ghost-filled stretch of wilderness known as the 'Suicide Forest.'I enjoyed where this was going until the horrible ending. The plot surrounding the very real story of the "Suicide Forest" was what got me interested in the first place, but I wish the story was better.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonEthan HawkeScott GlennA rookie cop spends his first day as a Los Angeles narcotics officer with a rogue detective who isn't what he appears to be.Very, VERY late to the bandwagon on this one but what an awesome film. I loved how raw it was - you felt as if you were there with them. Some of the scenes will stick with me for a long time! The acting was A+ as well.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsMichael DouglasBenicio Del ToroCatherine Zeta-JonesA conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is a crack addict. Two DEA agents protect an informant. A jailed drug baron's wife attempts to carry on the family business.ALSO very late to the bandwagon on this one as well... But it was still a great watch! To be honest, it wasn't AS enthralling as it's claimed to be, but I really enjoyed the interweaving story lines. The characters were very well built and were easy to both love and hate, and the slightly ambiguous ending did a really good job of rounding it all out.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsJohn Gallagher Jr.Kate SiegelMichael TruccoA deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.I usually feel like once you've seen a "home invasion" movie, you've seen them all... except this one. I absolutely loved the added element of the victim being deaf, and therefor having to overcome a very different set of problems that most characters in these type of movies don't. I thought the actress did a great job at conveying very real, believable emotions with absolutely no spoken dialog throughout. This was a real gem for me!
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.Such an adorable children's film. It kept both myself and my daughter entertained throughout and it has enough "adult" jokes to keep parents satisfied. Super cute!
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. This is definitely one of the most, if not THE MOST visually striking movies I've ever seen! The landscapes are so breathtaking and the cinematography is incredible. While the acting is really amazing as well, I feel like the landscapes are what give this movie its edge. The visuals, for me, are what create the bleak, desolate atmosphere. Definitely one of the best movies of the year.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.Oh man...if this isn't an emotionally draining, tear jerking film I don't know what is. As a mother, this really hit home for me. I found myself tearing up in nearly every single scene. Brie Larson really does an incredible job portraying her character and the emotional struggles she faces. The bond between the two main actors is really quite powerful. A draining, but equally fantastic film.
- DirectorPatrick BriceStarsKatie AseltonPatrick BriceMark DuplassA young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. When he notices the man's odd behavior, he starts to question his intentions.A pretty disturbing psychological horror. Definitely a slow build and very eerie atmosphere. If you're looking for a jump scare, this isn't it! However, if you're a fan of psychological horror, this is a nice little watch.
