A charming criminal. A classic romance in a beautifully animated film, made to watch on cold winter days.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsWilliam H. MacyFrances McDormandSteve BuscemiMinnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson.THE snowy movie. Wrap yourself up in some blankets and enjoy the wild ride of a crime, that goes wrong in the worst (hilarious) ways.
- DirectorTobi BaumannStarsChristoph Maria HerbstBastian PastewkaSophie von KesselAn unsuccessful pool noodle representative and an ambitious corporate lawyer have nothing in common except for the desire to be at home for Christmas. But fate has other plans for them. Their accidental meeting at Vienna's airport is the beginning of an adventure that soon evolves into a winter odyssey across Eastern Europe.A German TV movie with excellent leads. Their comedic talent is A+. Unbelievably funny. Also very sweet and christmasy.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.A crazy author, snowed in in an empty hotel. What could go wrong? A classic.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsJason ClarkeAng Phula SherpaThomas M. WrightOn May 10, 1996, mountain guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer combine their expedition teams for a final ascent to the summit of Mount Everest. With little warning, a storm strikes the mountain and the climbers must now battle to survive.Suspenseful and quite authentic. Grip the edge of your seat kind of thrilling.
- DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsDennis QuaidJake GyllenhaalEmmy RossumJack Hall, paleoclimatologist, must make a daring trek from Washington, D.C. to New York City to reach his son, trapped in the cross-hairs of a sudden international storm which plunges the planet into a new Ice Age.A disaster movie with a classic formula. I don't care, this one excels in its execution.
- DirectorGillian ArmstrongStarsSusan SarandonWinona RyderKirsten DunstThe March sisters live and grow in post-Civil War America.Heartbreak, family, love, loss. A great, heartfelt story that will probably move you, if aren't made of ice.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsKenneth BranaghPenélope CruzWillem DafoeWhen a murder occurs on the train on which he's travelling, celebrated detective Hercule Poirot is recruited to solve the case.A beautifully shot and designed movie with a great cast. Can get a bit boring at times, but the oldtimey look and the orientexpress stranded in an icy mountain scape is worth the watch alone.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsKenji MizuhashiYoshimi KondouSatomi HanamuraTold in three interconnected segments, Takaki tells the story of his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love.A sad romance about two teenagers who have the odds working against them. I found this movie's plot rather tedious, but the animation is beautiful.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsHugh JackmanRachel WeiszSean Patrick ThomasAs a modern-day scientist, Tommy is struggling with mortality, desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi.A lovestory told threefold over different timelines. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are amazing in their roles. This movie is breathtaking and left me speechless. A you hate it or you love it kind of film.
- DirectorPhil TraillStarsFelicity JonesEd WestwickBill NighyFormer skateboard champion Kim wants to make more money after her mother's tragic death. She joins the elite posh servicing company, which sends her off to Austria.A charming, funny flick about a vacation job in a chalet, snowboarding and romance, of course. Bill Nighy is in there and Ken Duken, and they are both great.
- DirectorVadim JeanStarsDavid JasonMarc WarrenMichelle DockeryIt's Hogswatch (equivalent to Christmas) on the Discworld and the Hogfather has gone missing, requiring Death to take his place while his granddaughter Susan endeavors to find out what has happened. As impossible as it is to truly capture Terry Pratchett's world on film, Hogfather did a rather good job.
Death impersonates the discworld's equivalent of Santa and his granddaughter (an excellent Michelle Dockery) invades the toothfairy's castle. There are also assassins, wizards and a god of hangovers. Yes, it is awesome. - DirectorKevin MacdonaldStarsSimon YatesJoe SimpsonBrendan MackeyThe true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.Suspenseful documentary about a mountaineering accident. Rather gruesome at times.
- DirectorFrank MarshallStarsPaul WalkerJason BiggsBruce GreenwoodBrutal cold forces two Antarctic explorers to leave their team of sled dogs behind as they fend for their survival.A man has to leave his dogs behind in a blizzard and stops at nothing to return to them. This movie is as much about the Huskies as it is about their owner. Surprisingly good movie!
- DirectorTony BancroftBarry CookStarsMing-Na WenEddie MurphyBD WongTo save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.I thought the scenes in which the Hunns confront Mulan and her men in the snowy mountains were reason enough to put this film on the list.
- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsDaniel RadcliffeRupert GrintEmma WatsonAn orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. All the Harry Potter movies have great winter scenes, in which Hogwarts is snowed in and ice-cold and the trio enjoys some butterbeers in Hogsmeade. Choose any Potter movie you like for an excellent Christmas movie marathon.
- DirectorSharon MaguireStarsRenée ZellwegerColin FirthHugh GrantBridget Jones is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary.Hilarious and very British RomCom with excellent leads. Great London in winter vibes.
- DirectorShôgo FuruyaSatoshi KonStarsTôru EmoriYoshiaki UmegakiAya OkamotoOn Christmas Eve, three homeless people living on the streets of Tokyo discover a newborn baby among the trash and set out to find its parents.A thoughtful and rather melancholic movie about what it means to be human, about loneliness and broken dreams.
- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsMacaulay CulkinJoe PesciDaniel SternAn eight-year-old troublemaker, mistakenly left home alone, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas Eve.THE Christmas holiday movie. Will never get old. Will watch every year.
- DirectorNancy MeyersStarsKate WinsletCameron DiazJude LawTwo women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other's countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love.Very romantic, somewhat sappy. Jude Law is at his prettiest here. There is a really touching plotline between Kate Winslet's and Elie Wiesel's character.
- DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonHugh JackmanTom CostelloThe story of Eddie Edwards, the notoriously tenacious British underdog ski jumper who charmed the world at the 1988 Winter Olympics. An underdog-goes-to-prove-everyone-wrong tale about a British skijumper. A very fun sports movie with a motivational message. Enjoyable.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Wes Anderson's magical and whimsical world pulls you in and doesn't let go. Grand Budapest Hotel is meticulously executed and staggering in its love to detail. The cast is - as always with Anderson - stellar and the tale is, of course, beautiful.
- DirectorPatrick HasburghStarsPaul GrossPeter BergFinola HughesAn autoworker and his buddy exit Detroit, move to Colorado, and become popular ski instructors. This is by no means a good movie. The plot is all over the place and the characters are, well, mostly idiots. But the 90s vibe is strong in this one and it is really snowy.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsVal KilmerJoanne WhalleyWarwick DavisA young farmer is chosen to undertake a perilous journey in order to protect a special baby from an evil queen.A buddy-Adventure-sword-fighting-romance-fantasy film with dwarves, baby abductions, prophecies, an evil witch and sort of dated effects. What's not to love?
- DirectorJørgen LerdamAnders SørensenStarsTord PetersonLukas LarssonMona SeilitzThe old man PETTSON and his cat FINDUS live on a small farm way out in the countryside in Sweden. Christmas is approaching, and Pettson has given Findus the rash promise that THE TOMTE will come around with gifts for him at Christmas Eve. Pettson does not believe in the Tomte, but in order not to disappoint his cat, he decides to build an artificial Tomte - a mechanical TOMTE MACHINE. Pettson has a hard time keeping the project secret from Findus and getting the machine to actually work in due time. But somehow a mysterious magical force interferes...Very cute film for a younger audience. Decidedly unproblematic.
