The Shortlist: All-Time Favorites, Ranked
Inspired by IMDb's Top 250, one of my first exposures to a film canon, I've long kept a personal Top 250(+). Although I've since come around to seeing the silliness of such an enterprise—ranking films with any precision is futile, after all—it is satisfying to put one's passions on the line so explicitly. These are the movies I go to bat for without equivocation, the movies that have sustained me over the years and kept me coming back for more. Many of the following convinced me that film was a worthwhile pursuit in the first place.
And, per usual, many are due for a revisit. The top 50ish is mostly composed of films I've seen more than once; as you read further into the 150s and beyond, more uncertainties and caveats creep in (e.g., Is Waiting for Guffman really "better" than Sunrise?). No matter. Such granular distinctions, especially at a personal and subjective level, aren't really important; I don't pretend my approach is scientific. What matters is that these movies, collectively, are closest to my heart and soul, a testament to what I love most in the form.
