Ranked: Pixar Films
Ranking the Pixar films is a bit silly, because they are all good, but if I had to rank them, this is how I would do it.

- DirectorJohn LasseterStarsTom HanksTim AllenDon RicklesA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom.I feel somewhat obligated to put Toy Story at the front, because this truly was a game changer at the time. On top of that it was an amazing film, extremely well done and all around great!
- DirectorPete DocterDavid SilvermanLee UnkrichStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanMary GibbsIn order to power the city, monsters have to scare children so that they scream. However, the children are toxic to the monsters, and after a child gets through, two monsters realize things may not be what they think. There's something about this film that I just absolutely love, it's got heart, it's clever, it's funny, it's got action, it has everything one could want from a film. I'd say a nearly flawless film.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends. One of the few sequels/prequels that totally lives up to the original. I already loved the story of Monster's Inc, so I was extremely happy to see more of that world.
- DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school. What an amazing film! And so clever! If you don't get at least a little misty-eyed when Bing-Bong fades away, you are dead inside! Such a well thought out, original and great film!
- DirectorJohn LasseterAndrew StantonStarsKevin SpaceyDavid FoleyJulia Louis-DreyfusA misfit ant, looking for "warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers, recruits a group of bugs that turn out to be an inept circus troupe. Not sure what it is, but this film was so fun to me. I loved the world it was set in, I loved the characters, I loved the story! Such a great film!
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world. This one is a bit tough to place. I did enjoy this film quite a bit, and thought it had some great ideas, but I just enjoyed the above films slightly more. They are all excellent though, so it doesn't really matter.
- DirectorAndrew StantonStarsBen BurttElissa KnightJeff GarlinIn the distant future, a small waste-collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind. What a great movie! Such a cinematic oddity, there's virtually no speaking for much of the film and yet still very enjoyable and has tons of heart!
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsTom HollandChris PrattJulia Louis-DreyfusIn a magical world full of technological advances, elven brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot set out on an adventure to resurrect their late father for a day.Absolutely loved this film! Great ideas and unique!
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway. This is a really unique and odd film. I love that it's so different from the others, but still fun and has something for everyone in the film. A solid film for sure!
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.Whoa! I thought they did a great job with Toy Story 2, this was so well done! I was truly afraid for what was going to happen at the end of the film...and this is kid's film. Extremely well done and an amazing sequel. I would welcome a 4th entry, but it really is a solid send-off to the franchise if they leave it here.
- DirectorJohn LasseterAsh BrannonLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackWhen Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye.A fantastic sequel. Nailed it with this one!
- DirectorJohn LasseterJoe RanftStarsOwen WilsonBonnie HuntPaul NewmanOn the way to the biggest race of his life, a hotshot rookie race car gets stranded in a rundown town and learns that winning isn't everything in life.I didn't think I was going to like this films anywhere near as much as I did. It was great! Great ideas, great story, fun for everyone. Solid film!
- DirectorEnrico CasarosaStarsJacob TremblayJack Dylan GrazerEmma BermanOn the Italian Riviera, an unlikely but strong friendship grows between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human.A very unique story, I loved it.
- DirectorMark AndrewsBrenda ChapmanSteve PurcellStarsKelly MacdonaldBilly ConnollyEmma ThompsonDetermined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.I didn't know what to expect before seeing this film but I definitely enjoyed the film. It was a great story. Another solid entry to the Pixar library.
- DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.In my opinion this is one of the few sequels that out did the original. I can't quite place why I dug this film so much (granted it's right next to the other film on this list), but I just loved it. I think I really liked the Dory back-story and gave her a bit more depth. I felt she was a rather silly character in the first film.
- DirectorAndrew StantonLee UnkrichStarsAlbert BrooksEllen DeGeneresAlexander GouldAfter his son is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, a timid clownfish sets out on a journey to bring him home. While I did enjoy this film, I didn't enjoy as much as many others did. I do think this is a very smart, fun film, but I wasn't in love with Dory's character (until seeing the second film...see above) and the story didn't seem super unique (dad trying to find his son is nothing new). But the movie has grown on me over the years, so perhaps I would rank this higher now.
- DirectorPeter SohnStarsJeffrey WrightFrances McDormandMaleah Nipay-PadillaIn a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While this film is pretty low on my list, I did really enjoy this film and could not figure out why this didn't do better at the box office. I really enjoyed this film, I thought it was very unique and fun.
- DirectorBrian FeeStarsOwen WilsonCristela AlonzoChris CooperLightning McQueen sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he's still the best race car in the world. While Cars 2 was definitely a different kind of film than the first movie, this one seemed like it was going back to it's roots. All in all a great film, not quite as good as the first and hard to say it was better than the other original films Pixar has put out, but definitely a fun film.
- DirectorAngus MacLaneStarsChris EvansKeke PalmerPeter SohnWhile spending years attempting to return home, marooned Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear encounters an army of ruthless robots commanded by Zurg who are attempting to steal his fuel source.Good but not great.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonHolly HunterSarah VowellThe Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world. They sure took their time releasing this one, I can't think of another film that people have been screaming for more in the last 20 years. I think they did a solid job with a sequel. My only complaints are that it was a bit predictable and I wanted to see them fighting as a team more...but it was still a great film.
- DirectorJosh CooleyStarsTom HanksTim AllenAnnie PottsWhen a new toy called "Forky" joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy.Good but not great.
- DirectorJohn LasseterBradford LewisStarsOwen WilsonLarry the Cable GuyMichael CaineStar race car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race. But the road to the championship becomes rocky as Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.I will certainly admit that this is took the franchise in a different direction than the first film, and focused on a very different theme. It was still fun, and I enjoyed it. No where near as bad as people make it out to be.
- DirectorBrad BirdJan PinkavaStarsBrad GarrettLou RomanoPatton OswaltA rat who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous Paris restaurant.I'm not quite sure what it is about this film, but it never really grabbed me, since it's release it's been one of my least favorite Pixar films. Still a good movie, but no where near the caliber as the other films.
- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda. It was an interesting film, but the animation was odd and not my cup of tea.
- DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer. While visually stunning, this is without a doubt my least favorite Pixar film. The story was ok, not terribly interesting to me, it was also very predictable. Of course Hector was going to the kid's grandfather, it was pretty obvious. I also have to admit that the cultural aspect of the film just doesn't excite me. Also, this came out several years after "Book of Life", which was somewhat similar in theme, so it was a little hard to see this as new and fresh. Still a good film, but easily my least favorite.
