- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life. The movie that brought demonic possession to light and made the phrase "The Power of Christ Compels You" famous.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.Alfred Hitchcock....the genius himself at his best here! The ultimate in suspense and horror without much gore at all.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.A theme song made from few notes.....silence....and heavy breathing (and the occasional scream) are all John Carpenter needed to make Halloween a classic film to watch during the season of the same name.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Hotels can be creepy in their own right, but this one had an evil inside and made a perfectly normal dysfunctional family's patriarchal figure go insane!!!
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.Without a doubt a classic horror film that will make you think twice about stopping at a house in the middle of nowhere to ask for directions.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRoy ScheiderRobert ShawRichard DreyfussWhen a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.Watching this scary account of a fish with a huge appetite will make anyone afraid of going in the water.
- DirectorStuart RosenbergStarsJames BrolinMargot KidderRod SteigerNewlyweds and their three children move into a large house where a mass murder was committed. They start to experience strange, inexplicable manifestations which have strong effects on everyone living in or visiting the house. Not even a priest could stop this house from ruining the lives of the people who lived there. Possibly a warning to anyone buying a new house??
- DirectorRobin HardyStarsEdward WoodwardChristopher LeeDiane CilentoA puritan police sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl, who the pagan locals claim never existed.Just goes to show how people may be brainwashed to believe that doing the wrong thing can be the right thing. This one really makes you think (hopefully for yourself) about horror in a different way.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsSandra PeabodyLucy GranthamDavid HessTwo teenage girls heading to a rock concert for one's birthday try to score marijuana in the city, where they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychopathic convicts.A movie so disturbing it will leave you silent for a while afterwards. The sheer horror of the realistic quality will leave you wondering....whether the people who live near you are escaped convicts or not.
- DirectorRob ZombieStarsSid HaigKaren BlackBill MoseleyTwo young couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of murder end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.Wanting to win a race but never seeing the finish line is how I would describe this film, since you are left wanting the protagonist to survive with her never really catching a break. Magnificently gruesome and horrific, this film and its sequel (The Devil's Rejects) qualify as the 10th on my list.
