- CreatorMitchell HurwitzStarsJason BatemanMichael CeraPortia de RossiLevel-headed son Michael Bluth takes over family affairs after his father is imprisoned. But the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family are making his job unbearable.Probably the finest comedy ever created, about the 'wealthy family who lost everything and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together'.
Perfectly crafted with likeable (but horrible!) characters and a slew of self-referencing make this the funniest show I've ever watched - that only gets better with re-watches. A masterpiece! - CreatorBryan FullerStarsLee PaceAnna FrielChi McBrideA pastry chef with the power to bring dead people back to life solves murder mysteries with his resurrected childhood sweetheart, a cynical private investigator, and a lovesick waitress.Absolutely fantastic 'escapist' comedy/drama/forensic-fairy-tale about a man who can bring dead things back to life.
Surreal, bright, colourful, touching and altogether excellently told, the (admittedly small amount of) episodes that comprise these 2 series and flawless from start to finish. Brilliant. - StarsSimon PeggJessica HynesJulia DeakinFriends Tim and Daisy, 20-something North Londoners with uncertain futures, must pretend to be a couple to live in the only apartment they can afford.Incredibly surreal but awesome pop-culture sitcom about a London flatshare 'couple', which manages to create a completely unique yet devastatingly interesting world with fantastic characters.
- CreatorDavid WolstencroftStarsPeter FirthHugh SimonNicola WalkerThe missions of MI-5, the UK's domestic intelligence organization. If, like me, you're more than happy to suspend your disbelief while watching a TV show then Spooks is certainly one to check out. Can easily be seen as a British '24' but is so much more than that - intricate plotlines, hugely enjoyable characters and some fantastic acting definitely make this my drama series of choice. Has kept me hooked for 10 series.
- CreatorGreg DanielsMichael SchurStarsAmy PoehlerJim O'HeirNick OffermanThe absurd antics of an Indiana town's public officials as they pursue sundry projects to make their city a better place.Appeared in the shadow of 'The Office US' as another mockmentary but quickly grew to become a beast of it's own - a better, more hilarious beast. Following a group of local-government workers it delivers a brilliant ensemble cast, spearheaded by the magnificent Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. Incredibly sweet and painfully funny.
- CreatorDavid X. CohenMatt GroeningStarsBilly WestJohn DiMaggioKatey SagalPhilip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy, is accidentally frozen in 1999 and thawed out on New Year's Eve 2999.Like 'Parks' to 'The Office', Futurama appeared somewhat in the shadow of 'The Simpsons' but, in my opinion, most definitely surpassed it in quality. Based around a New York pizza man who travels 1000 years into the future, it combines some emotional storytelling with occasional social commentary and a whole host of laughs, it's definitely worth everybody's time.
- CreatorSydney NewmanStarsJodie WhittakerPeter CapaldiPearl MackieThe further adventures in time and space of the alien adventurer known as the Doctor and his companions from planet Earth. It was the reboot of a show I knew vaguely about that I'd never seen, of an alien's travels through time that completely blew me away. Breeding relate-able and interesting characters with some incredibly sci-fi storylines over the years, it's certainly something worth checking out.
- CreatorRob McElhenneyGlenn HowertonStarsCharlie DayGlenn HowertonRob McElhenneyFive friends with big egos and small brains are the proprietors of an Irish pub in Philadelphia.Incredibly addictive American comedy about a gang of incredibly mean-spirited friends who own an Irish pub in Philadelphia. Where this show truly succeeds is in creating possibly the most horrible cast of characters ever, yet it doesn't even matter with the amount of laughs that can be had at their expense.
- StarsJohn CleesePrunella ScalesAndrew SachsHotel owner Basil Fawlty's incompetence, short fuse, and arrogance form a combination that ensures accidents and trouble are never far away.Absolutely seminal British comedy series written by and starring John Cleese about a frustrated hotel owner, which has worn incredibly well with age, which it at times painful but always downright hilarious to watch, with possibly one of the best casts ever assembled. Incredible.
- CreatorDavid KohanMax MutchnickStarsEric McCormackDebra MessingMegan MullallyGay lawyer Will and straight interior designer Grace share a New York City apartment. Their best friends are gleeful and proud gay Jack and charismatic, filthy-rich, amoral socialite Karen. In a sea of laugh-track comedies during the 90's, Will & Grace - about a gay lawyer and his straight best friend, stood heights above the rest as a truly hilarious sitcom. With some incredible guest casting complimenting a wonderful core cast, it's definitely not one to be missed.
- CreatorChris FedakJosh SchwartzStarsZachary LeviYvonne StrahovskiJoshua GomezWhen a computer geek inadvertently downloads critical government secrets into his brain, both the CIA and the NSA assign an agent to protect him and exploit his newfound skills. As with a number of the shows on this list, I could criticize the later seasons for not quite being as good as the early ones, Chuck continues to produce one of the most entertaining comedy/dramas on television. Centred around an average 'buy-more' employee who downloads a government database into his mind, it's certainly more light-hearted but just as entertaining as other spy-dramas such as 'Spooks'.
- CreatorRick BermanMichael PillerJeri TaylorStarsKate MulgrewRobert BeltranRoxann DawsonPulled to the far side of the galaxy, where the Federation is seventy-five years away at maximum warp speed, a Starfleet ship must cooperate with Maquis rebels to find a way home. While all the Star Trek series are great in their own right, for beginners (like me) Voyager was by far the easiest to get into and featured some truly riveting storylines over the 7 series made. A fantastic sci-fi adventure!
- CreatorTina FeyStarsTina FeyAlec BaldwinTracy MorganLiz Lemon, head writer of the sketch-comedy show "TGS with Tracy Jordan", must deal with an arrogant new boss and a crazy new star while trying to run a successful television show without losing her mind.Tina Fey's award-winning comedy series - based around the fictional TV series 'TGS' starring herself as the flustered but incredibly amusing Liz Lemon, borrows more than just a few ideas from trailblazing shows such as 'Arrested Development' (and why not copy from the best). In it's own right, however, the show is both as entertaining as it is clever and continues to maintain a high standard of writing 6 years after it was first broadcast - definitely worth checking out.
- CreatorJames L. BrooksMatt GroeningSam SimonStarsDan CastellanetaNancy CartwrightHarry ShearerThe satiric half-hour adventures of a working-class family in the misfit city of Springfield. While my view of the show has probably been tainted by it running far, far too long (I'm not up-to-date with anything past about series 12), for a long long time The Simpsons was by far the best program on the air. Filled to the brim with more pop-culture references than Spaced and Arrested Development combined, alongside some scorchingly good stories, it's definitely one to watch!
- CreatorTerri MinskyStarsSara RueZachary LeviAndrea ParkerHuge egos. Backbiting assistants. Screaming deadlines. Claudia "Claude" Casey has moved up in the secretarial world of television news, from permanent floater to the anchor's desk. Can she melt the hearts of the competitive up-and-comers?Like Will & Grace, not usually my favourite kind of comedy show but this little anomaly about a bubbly temp to lands in over her feet against vicious office co-workers makes for an incredibly pleasant watch. The cast are good, the comedy is there and it makes for a very cosy show to settle down to in the evening.
- StarsSimon BirdJames BuckleyBlake HarrisonFollows four friends and their antics during their final years of school. The best British TV comedy offering since 'Spaced', about a group of teenagers in high school that are neither cool nor losers, hence 'The Inbetweeners'. It's painfully funny and relatable for anyone who went to high school (although the antics do get a little too absurd by the end) and always worth watching for a laugh.
- CreatorLiz BrixiusEvan DunskyLinda WallemStarsEdie FalcoMerritt WeverPaul SchulzeA drug-addicted nurse struggles to find a balance between the demands of her frenetic job at a New York City hospital and an array of personal dramas.Edie Falco turns in a scorching performance as the drug-addled nurse, Jackie, trying to make her way through a tricky life of hospital co-workers and family troubles. The show alternates both moving moments with light-hearted comedy very well, but occasionally struggles to see through some of the bigger changes in Jackie's life. Despite this, the end product is still very much worth everybody's time.
- CreatorAmy Sherman-PalladinoStarsLauren GrahamAlexis BledelKeiko AgenaA dramedy centering around the relationship between a thirtysomething single mother and her teen daughter living in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Not something I'd ever expected to like, the fast-talking, pop culture littered Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (girls) create a very human drama in the sleepy town of Stars Hollow that is as addictive as it is interesting. A runaway hit, that is worth checking out if you haven't already.
- CreatorGreg DanielsRicky GervaisStephen MerchantStarsSteve CarellJenna FischerJohn KrasinskiA mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, tedium and romance. While, like the Simpsons, later series took a notable downturn in quality, the Office is still a very watchable, hilarious and amusing look at co-workers in a small paper company in Scranton. Steve Carrell turns out an amazing performance every week as Michael Scott, and the first 3-4 series and truly hilarious from start to finish. Still worth a watch.
