Some actresses I wish we'd see more of
This is a list of actresses who I feel aren't getting the great roles they deserve. It's not necessarily a list of my favorites (I don't think Meryl Streep is losing any roles for lack of being famous enough) but only a list of women whose fame is considerably less than their talents warrant.

Born as Emma Chukker and raised in San Diego, California, Emma Caulfield began studying drama at the La Jolla Playhouse and the Old Globe Theatre, where she won the distinguished honor of "Excellence in Theatre Arts". She picked up her drama studies once again at The American School in Switzerland (TASIS) in London, all before finishing high school.
Caulfield, an award-winning actress known for her starring role as the young and beautiful demon-turned-mortal "Anya" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) starting in 1999. Her role was initially conceived only as a guest demon-of-the-week appearance in a December 1998 episode, but she was called back for a few more guest spots when Joss Whedon recognized her talent. She appeared in most of the episodes the following season and, after that, was promoted to a full-time series regular. She has starred in numerous films, including the hit indie sci-fi/rom-com film Timer (2009) as the central character, Oona Leary, a woman on the verge of her 30th birthday who trusts that an implanted timer device will tell her the exact moment she will meet her true love.
Caulfield starred in the ensemble indie film Telling of the Shoes (2014) as "Alex", the quietly suffering wife of a man with a deep secret. She garnered praise in the role of Sarah in the short film Hollow (2007), picking up a Best Actress award at the Beverly Hills Short Film Festival. She starred as "Caitlin Green" in the Revolution Studios' thriller, Darkness Falls (2003). She also starred alongside Chaney Kley as a young woman attempting to take care of her troubled 8-year-old brother plagued by night terrors. Left to her own resources, Caitlin must tackle the legendary evil that haunts their small town in the dark.
Caulfield spent 2010 juggling two shows, Gigantic (2010) and Life Unexpected (2010), in heavily recurring arcs. She is also a writer and producer. In August 2009, she and her writing partner Camilla Ransten launched the successful web comic, Contropussy. A decidedly female-driven satire that showcases human behavior through the eyes of animals. She is also the co-creator, executive producer and star of the hit web series Bandwagon: The Series (2010).I first saw Emma Caulfield in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and she was excellent in it. I've recently watched some of the more recent things she's done, and her talent certainly goes beyond the small films she's been given. It is a fine line between laughter and tears, between comedy and tragedy, and there are very few actresses who walk that line as beautifully as Emma Caulfield.- Actress

At sixteen years old, Melanie Lynskey dazzled the film world with an audacious debut in Peter Jackson's revered psychological crime picture, Heavenly Creatures (1994). Her electrifying portrait of Pauline Parker - high school misfit whose fierce rapport with her only friend (a pre-fame Kate Winslet) spirals dangerously out of control - was deemed "perfect" (Richard Corliss, TIME) and secured the humble New Zealander a Best Actress trophy in her motherland. Following a three-year interval spent studying at university and relocating to Los Angeles, Lynskey made a welcome return to the silver screen when she was cast as Drew Barrymore's sweet-natured stepsister in Andy Tennant's 'girl power' twist on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998). Parts in But I'm a Cheerleader (1999), Coyote Ugly (2000), Snakeskin (2001), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Shattered Glass (2003), and Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated war epic Flags of Our Fathers (2006) came next.
In the consequent years, Lynskey emerged as one of the industry's most celebrated character actors, picking up plaudits for a host of appearances in prestige vehicles such as Sam Mendes's Away We Go (2009), Jason Reitman's Up in the Air (2009), Steven Soderbergh's The Informant! (2009), Tom McCarthy's Win Win (2011), Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), and Adam McKay's Don't Look Up (2021). Prolific supporting roles - opposite the calibre of George Clooney, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio - aside, spotlight turns in Hello I Must Be Going (2012), Happy Christmas (2014), The Intervention (2016) - for which she scored a Special Jury Prize at Sundance - and the genre-bending I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017) have equally proved her mettle as a dynamite leading lady.
Since entering the annals of 21st century popular culture with her riotous embodiment of Rose - on the toweringly successful Two and a Half Men (2003), where she appeared for over a decade as Charlie Sheen's duplicitous admirer - Lynskey has injected her scene-stealing prowess into a multitude of small-screen gigs: among them, HBO's exalted tragicomedy Togetherness (2015), which showcased her "sublime" (Vanity Fair) depiction of a dissatisfied stay-at-home mom; macabre Stephen King spookfest Castle Rock (2018), where she headlined as pill-popping psychic Molly Strand; and all-star political period piece Mrs. America (2020), in which she joined forces with Cate Blanchett. For her spellbinding work on Showtime's Yellowjackets (2021) - where she's front-and-centre as Shauna, a suburban housewife consumed by horrific secrets - Lynskey collected the coveted Critics' Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series (2022), with Rolling Stone's Alan Sepinwall describing her turn in the runaway cult smash as the "dark, messy, charismatic part she's been waiting her whole career to play".Melanie Lynskey is another actress who can walk the line between comedy and tragedy in such a way as to make me simultaneously cry and laugh. I find that to be the mark of the actors I most admire, which places her and Emma Caulfield ahead of the others on this list. The rest can make you do one or the other - these can have you doing both. If you doubt it, check out TiMER (Caulfield) and Away We Go (Lynskey, who has no more than 10 minutes of screen time yet steals the show)- Actress

Sara Ramirez was born in Mazatlán, Mexico, on August 31, 1975, and moved to the United States at 7 after their parents' divorce. Sara is a graduate of The Juillard School (1997). Ramirez made their Broadway debut in the Paul Simon musical The Capeman (1998) before winning a Tony Award for their portrayal of the Lady of the Lake in the 2005 production of Spamalot.
Ramirez appeared as Dr. Callie Torres in 239 episodes of the ABC hit Grey's Anatomy, and has gained acclaim for their role as Che Diaz in the Sex and the City reboot, "And Just Like That..."
In addition to their acting career, Sara is a singer/songwriter and activist in support of LGBT rights. They are a member of the True Colors United board of directors and the San Diego, New York, and San Francisco LGBT Centers. In 2015, they were awarded the Ally for Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.I got bored with Grey's Anatomy a couple of seasons ago, but not because of Ramirez. She was not only the most beautiful, but easily the most talented of the cast. (Heigl might make me doubt that if she'd return to her fighting weight from her Roswell days...I think she lost as much weight in her brain as hips, and neither loss helped) Her portrayal was always human and accessible, which is hard to achieve when starring in a mediocre melodrama.- Actress

Maya Rudolph was born on July 27, 1972 in Gainesville, Florida, to Richard Rudolph, a music producer, and soul singer Minnie Riperton. Her mother was African-American and her father is Ashkenazi Jewish (from a family from Lithuania, Russia, Germany, and Hungary). In 1973, Maya, her parents, and her older brother, Marc Rudolph, moved to California to further Minnie's music career. Here Minnie recorded "Lovin' You", her most famous single, in which one can hear her sing "Maya, Maya, Maya" at the end of the song; Riperton said that the song was used as a lullaby for Maya.
During adolescence, Maya attended St. Augustine by the Sea School, where she met childhood friend, Gwyneth Paltrow. The Paltrows and the Rudolphs became family friends and, in 2000, Richard Rudolph and Maya filled the role of music supervisors on the Bruce Paltrow-directed film Duets (2000), which starred Gwyneth.
In 1990, Maya enrolled at the University of California at Santa Cruz, majoring in photography. It was here that Maya formed the band "Supersauce" with fellow students. After graduation in 1994, Maya left the band and soon joined The Rentals, fronted by Weezer bassist Matt Sharp. Maya was featured on the 1999 release "Seven More Minutes", where she sang backup vocals on "Barcelona" and "My Head is in the Sun". Maya began touring with the group, singing backup and playing Moog synthesizer. When The Rentals disbanded, Maya decided to pursue her dream of a career in comedy, joining the famed troupe "The Groundlings".
On May 6, 2000, Maya joined the cast of Saturday Night Live (1975), and became one of that show's most popular performers. Famous sketches include a dead-on impression of fashion diva Donatella Versace; high school flake "Megan", the host of her own morning talk show, "Wake-up WakeField"; and one of the members of the R&B parody "Gemini's Twin". In 2006, she co-starred in the film A Prairie Home Companion (2006), directed by the legendary Robert Altman and based on the NPR show by Garrison Keillor.
Maya has four children with her partner, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. When I said Melanie Lynskey stole the show in Away We Go, I lied. She only borrowed it from Maya Rudolph for a few minutes. With a little time, I think she'll end up among my very favorites. She shone brightly in Robert Altman's star studded swansong, A Prairie Home Companion and has not disappointed ever. She can do camp as easily as drama, and deftly crosses the fine line discussed earlier. Definitely one to watch.- Actress

1993 graduate of DeForest Area High School, in DeForest, Wisconsin. Attended the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, earning a bachelor degree of fine arts in 1997. From there, attended Rutgers University in New Jersey, earning a master of fine arts in 2001. After leaving Rutgers, headed to the New York area to work on her acting career. After 2 years in New York, moved to Los Angeles and worked on some unsuccessful pilots before landing her role on Joey (2004) co-starring Matt LeBlanc and Drea de Matteo. For those who never bothered to watch Better Off Ted, shame on you. Those of us who watch TV only through netflix don't get to affect ratings, so great shows fall through the cracks! Andrea Anders was the best part of the show - the truly human character amidst a cast of caricatures. Alternately funny, sad and inspiring, she did it all very deftly. Would love to see her show up in some films!- Actress

Born in London, England, Hayley Elizabeth Atwell has dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and the United States. An only child, Hayley was named after actress Hayley Mills. Her parents, Alison (Cain) and Grant Atwell, both motivational speakers, met at a London workshop of Dale Carnegie's self-help bible "How to Win Friends and Influence People". Her mother is English (with Irish ancestry) and her father is American; he was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and is partly of Native-American descent (his Native American name is Star Touches Earth). Her parents divorced when she was age two. Her father returned to America and Hayley remained with her mother in London, but she spent her summers in Missouri with her father. Hayley's mother saw theater as an important communal experience, so she was introduced to theater from a young age. At age 11, she had memorable trip to see Ralph Fiennes playing Hamlet. She would later work with him on The Duchess (2008).
She went to Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girl's School in West London where she excelled academically. She took her A-levels at the London Oratory School. She took two years out of her education, traveling with her father and working for a casting director. In 2005, she graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a degree in Acting. Hayley began her career with parts on a few BBC television productions. Her first big break came in the television miniseries, The Line of Beauty (2006). The following year, she got her first film role in How About You (2007). She followed this with Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream (2007). Her breakthrough role came four years later as British agent Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).For those of you who haven't seen Pillars of the Earth, it's worth it if only for Hayley Atwell's performance. Don't get me wrong, it's good - but she is great. I haven't seen Captain America yet, but I doubt it stretched her much...summer blockbusters are hardly great acting showcases. I can't wait to see her in some more character driven films. Seeing as she has been in one Woody Allen movie, I am hopeful we can see her show her chops.- Actress

Rebecca Hall was born in London, England, the daughter of Peter Hall, a stage director and founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Maria Ewing, an opera singer. Her father was English. Her mother, who is American, is of Dutch and African-American origin. Her parents separated when she was still young, and they divorced in 1990. She has a half-brother, Edward Hall, who is a theatre director, and four other half-siblings, including theatre designer Lucy Hall, veteran TV drama producer Christopher Hall, and Jennifer Caron Hall, a writer and painter.Probably the longest resume on the list, which diminishes my desire to some extent. Her performances in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Please Give were both outstanding, and I am looking forward to most of her upcoming projects.- Actress

Martha Burns was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She is known for Great Performances (1971), Screening (2006) and Blindness (2008). She has been married to Paul Gross since 25 September 1988. They have two children. If you haven't seen Slings and Arrows, go watch it now. Seriously, I will wait. Done yet? If so, and you don't agree with this, you probably didn't even get far enough to start reading this entry. She is the only actress on this list older than I am, but she could still be a force if she gets the right role. She has all the tools, and only needs a project to show them off.
