- DirectorYam LaranasStarsJesse BradfordAmelia WarnerCarlos LeonAn ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him.I was pretty impressed at how atmospheric and creepy this film was. It had a real Hitchcock feel about it, the way it relied on tension and suspense much more than gore or graphic horror. Definitely recommend this film. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonRose ByrneTy SimpkinsA family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.I saw this film on a day where I needed to have some time to myself. I expected to not enjoy it very much and found myself pleasantly surprised. While the supernatural cliches had me rolling my eyes, the eeriness of the film and its atmosphere were very well done. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorWill GluckStarsEmma StoneAmanda BynesPenn BadgleyWhen Olive lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to one of the college boys, a girl overhears their conversation. Soon, her story spreads across the entire school like wildfire. Many people told me this was a fantastic, funny movie, so I hired it out from the video shop to see what it was about. I was disappointed. Not only were all of the characters unpleasant and little to be enjoyed, I cringed continuously at the blatant sexism and slut-shaming. Terrible movie that does little more than insult women. My rating: ★
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsTwo years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu's wedding. Stu's plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.A friend and I went to see this, expecting it to be hilarious because everyone who'd seen it said so. Uh... I gotta stop listening to what other people find funny in a film because while this film had a few (very minute) chuckle-worthy moments, it was otherwise not funny or entertaining or remotely clever. I became downright offended when the film blatantly bashed transgender/transexual people and homosexuality. Horrible, horrible movie. Not funny at all. Nobody has any idea how to make a clever comedy anymore. My rating: ★
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare. This movie is simply breathtaking. The dancing, the atmosphere, the acting, the creepiness. I absolutely loved it. I didn't want the film to end; I was disappointed when it did. Black Swan is a wonderfully twisted and wonderfully orchestrated psychological thriller that I will no doubt be watching successive times. My rating: ★★★★★
- DirectorFranck KhalfounStarsRachel NicholsWes BentleySimon ReynoldsA businesswoman is pursued by a psychopath after being locked in a parking garage on Christmas Eve.Being a fan of gore and horror, I picked this movie up from the video shop simply because the classification warned of "gore and blood". Pretty terrible movie. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, though. I enjoyed the gore and the suspense, but the film was otherwise completely lacking in any believable storyline. A fun film to watch if you want a horror that has no depth. My rating: ★★
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsCillian MurphyRose ByrneChris EvansA team of international astronauts is sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.I'd been meaning to watch this film for a while and finally got around to it during the weekend. I really enjoyed it. The film took a LOT of liberties with regards to scientific accuracy but I overlooked that because the concepts of the film were fantastic. More than that, there was a real darkness about it that I found gripping. Definitely a film I'd watch again. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorOliver HirschbiegelStarsMoritz BleibtreuChristian BerkelOliver StokowskiFor two weeks, 20 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards in a prison. The "prisoners" have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the "guards" are told to retain order without using physical violence.Hired this film out of curiosity, ended up being pretty blown away. The film is based on the Standford prison experiment, a real experiment that took place at Stanford University in 1971. Such a deep, disturbing film. I didn't really connect with the romantic subplot going on between Tarek and Dora and I wasn't sure what the point behind that subplot was. But otherwise, amazing movie. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorAnthony DiBlasiStarsJackson RathboneHanne SteenLaura DonnellyThree college students set out to document what other people dread the most. However, one of the three turns out to secretly be a sadistic psychopath who uses this knowledge to gruesomely torture the subjects.Based on the premise and the fact that it was based on a story of Clive Barker's, I had a lot of hope for this film. The film achieves what it set out to do and it was quite a good film, but there was something lacking in it. For that reason, the film fell short of my expectations. Still a good film, though. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorPaul WeitzStarsBen StillerTeri PoloRobert De NiroFamily-patriarch Jack Byrnes wants to appoint a successor. Does his son-in-law, the male nurse Greg Focker, have what it takes?I really enjoyed "Meet The Parents" and "Meet The Fockers". "Little Fockers" was fun but nowhere near as good as the first two. My rating: ★★
- DirectorJerami CruiseKilljoyMichael Todd SchneiderStarsCristie WhilesFred VogelMichael Todd SchneiderTwo friends bring along a newcomer to go on a killing spree. With its notoriety for being one of the sickest films ever made, I had to see this. The gore is top notch; it's frighteningly real. The acting was very well done, as was the cinematography. If I hadn't have known this was a film, I'd have thought this was a real snuff film. I did find the storyline pretty boring - then again, I don't think the storyline was what mattered. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorNathan GrenoByron HowardStarsMandy MooreZachary LeviDonna MurphyThe magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.I'm truly sick of Disney. I'm sick of its utterly prejudiced, heteronormative, sexist take on women. I'm sick of the notion that only good things happen to beautiful women and only bad things happen to ugly women. I'm sick of the way all of the aforementioned is packaged in an "innocent kid's film", abundant in brainwashing merchandising and aimed specifically at young, very easily impressionable kids. Disney is honestly an insult to children's intelligence. While "Tangled" was indeed entertaining, I couldn't enjoy the film because of everything I've just mentioned. Disney needs to get with the damn times. My rating: ★
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsKiefer SutherlandPaula PattonAmy SmartAn ex-cop and his family are the target of an evil force that is using mirrors as a gateway into their home.I was expecting something completely cheesy and predictable. It was a little cheesy in some parts and again, I was rolling my eyes at some of the supernatural cliches. However, this was a very well done film, very creepy, definitely had me feeling a little uneasy when the film was over. I couldn't help looking at my reflection in mirrors afterwards and getting a bit creeped out. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorVíctor GarciaStarsNick StahlEmmanuelle VaugierEvan JonesWhen Max, who is recovering from a traumatic accident, takes a job as a nighttime security guard, he begins to see visions of a young mysterious woman in the store's mirror.Unlike its predecessor, "Mirrors 2" sucked. It had a couple of scenes with some pretty decent gore, but otherwise, total waste of time. My rating: ★
- DirectorDavid SladeStarsPatrick WilsonElliot PageSandra OhHayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff's a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff's place. Jeff thinks it's his lucky night. He's in for a surprise.Wow. Talk about gripping and controversial. This film left me feeling both uneasy and vindicated. Very well acted, very solid script, wonderfully sustained tension, very disturbing. Hard to sit through, but well worth it. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorLawrence GoughStarsNeve McIntoshShaun DooleyDean AndrewsWhen a container washes ashore the residents of a sleepy cul-de-sac are plunged into violence, terror and paranoia. Ring fenced by the military a single mother must overcome all the odds to save her daughter.Low-budget independent British horror about a mysterious shipping container that gets washed up on a beach and carnage ensues in the small British town. Tension was very good in this film, as were the special effects. Quite a good little horror flick. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorMarcus DunstanStarsJosh StewartAndrea RothJuan FernándezDesperate to repay his debt to his ex-wife, an ex-con plots a heist at his new employer's country home, unaware that a second criminal has also targeted the property, and rigged it with a series of deadly traps.Saw-esque film that relied much more on graphic horror and suspense than plotline. By the end of the film, I had a number of questions which were imperative to the plot (such as "who the *beep* is the collector and why did he do all of that?" and "why'd he rig all those traps and how the hell did he do it all in such a short space of time", and "why is this collector invincible?"). That said, I actually enjoyed this film quite a lot, gaping plot-holes aside. I very much enjoyed the creativity of the traps and I of course enjoyed the gore. Not a brilliant film but not altogether terrible, either. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorJohn Erick DowdleStarsChris MessinaCaroline DhavernasBokeem WoodbineA group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them.Given M. Night Shymalan's reputation for making/writing terrible movies (The Sixth Sense exempted), I was expecting this to be equally terrible. Boy, was I wrong! What fantastic suspense! Creepy, tense, kept me guessing til the end. The biggest downfall with the movie, though, was the last five minutes. Cop-out ending, which was a shame. But up to that point? I was riveted and sitting on the edge of my seat. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsJames FrancoAmber TamblynKate MaraA mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.Been meaning to see this for a while, finally hired it out tonight. This film was a pretty ambitious undertaking, given the fact that most of it is set in a deep, very narrow rock crevice and with pretty much only one actor. He succeeded in delivering a great film. I got a real sense of Aron's character through his flashbacks and through the way he dealt with his predicament. Some moments of fantastic tension. Quite a gripping movie, quite an emotional rollercoaster ride, with a fantastic performance from James Franco. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorDavid FrankelStarsOwen WilsonJennifer AnistonEric DaneA family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.Caught this flick on TV tonight. A delightful movie where the characters are very real and the storyline, simple though it is, resonates with a lot of humanism. Very much enjoyed it, though the ending was more than a little cliched in the way it aimed straight for the tearjerker thing. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorAdam GieraschStarsJessica LowndesRoss KohnRoss McCallA young woman tries to find her injured boyfriend in a bizarre and dangerous hospital. What a stupid movie. Absolutely terrible. So many plot holes, ridiculous storyline, terrible acting, terrible script, terribly predictable "plot"... but incredibly fun to watch because of all those reasons. My rating: ★ for pure awfulness. ★★★★ for fun, stupid, gory entertainment.
- DirectorJim HensonStarsDavid BowieJennifer ConnellyToby FroudSixteen-year-old Sarah must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King.Blast from the past. Watched this movie this week. I love it as much now as I did when I was a kid. My rating: ★★★★★
- DirectorRobert KurtzmanStarsTammy LaurenAndrew DivoffAngus ScrimmA demonic djinn attempts to grant its owner three wishes, which will allow him to summon his brethren to Earth.A friend recommended this. I'm glad they did. I really enjoyed it. The special effects were fantastic for its time, and the concept is fantastic. Also loved the hell out of the djinn's cheesy one-liners. My rating: ★★★★
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsColin O'DonoghueAnthony HopkinsCiarán HindsAmerican seminary student Michael Kovak travels to Italy to take an exorcism course.A movie that had fantastic promise and an interesting premise, only to fall flat on its feet at the end with its "resolution". Bah. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.I'm probably one of the last people on the planet to have seen this film. I don't know why I waited so long to see it. Such a brilliant, lovely, wonderful, happy movie! My rating: ★★★★★
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.Well, this wasn't too bad a film. It had pretty decent tension and pretty decent atmosphere. The one thing that made me groan and eyeroll, though, was the religious earbashing. Why King has to have strong religious themes or undertones in all of his stories, I don't know, but it gets old. That said, I suppose it's not unrealistic that there was a Christian nutjob, particularly given this film was set in Maine. The CGI was pretty bad but enjoyable nonetheless. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsAnna FarisBill HaderBruce CampbellA local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know that things are about to take a turn for the worst. Finally got around to seeing this movie. What a silly film. Silly but fun. But also very silly. And there were so many plot holes and questions left unanswered that it made it a bit difficult for me to fully enjoy it. My rating: ★★★
- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsDavid Alan BascheOlivia ThirlbyLiza Colón-ZayasA real-time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on September 11th, 2001 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers foiled the terrorist plot. What a powerful movie. Very tastefully done, very realistic and very heartbreaking. I got a real sense of the terror those passengers must have felt during those last moments before the plane crashed. My rating: ★★★★
