- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.Stanley Kubrick made dramatic changes to the original novel, but in the end it was certainly for the best.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators. This movie sports an entirely female cast, and manages to be one of the creepiest movies I have ever seen. This movie relies heavily on atmosphere, and the feeling of terror is maintained throughout.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsLaurence FishburneSam NeillKathleen QuinlanA rescue crew is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that had been lost for seven years.Event Horizon is a movie that I wish had been a little bit longer. None the less it is still a very competent horror flick. This movie augments a naturally creepy atmosphere with a rather interesting story. It kind of degenerates into a standard monster flick in the latter portion though.
- DirectorBrad AndersonStarsHayden ChristensenThandiwe NewtonJohn LeguizamoThe population of Detroit has almost completely disappeared, but a few remain. As daylight disappears they realize that the Dark is coming for them. This is a very interesting movie. you never really find out what is going on, and it is almost completely devoid of violence. It is however one of the most terrifying movies to come out recently.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsThomas JaneMarcia Gay HardenLaurie HoldenA freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. There are precious few monster flicks that are actually scary. Most of them are just gore-fests. This movie however is truly scary. And it has an almost "hopeless" feeling meandering throughout.
- DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsAnna PaquinBrian CoxDylan BakerFive interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: an everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.Three interlacing tales provide a very well rounded movie. There is a good amount of suspense in this movie, but it manages to not be a "depressing movie".
- DirectorAbel FerraraStarsGabrielle AnwarMeg TillyTerry KinneyA teenage girl and her father discover alien clones are replacing humans on a remote U.S. military base in Alabama.I am putting this movies on the list because, whilst it is not particularly scary in whole, there is one scene that is one of the most terrifying scenes in film. "Where ya gonna go? Where ya gonna run?"
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackSamuel L. JacksonMary McCormackA man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror. This is a conundrum. Most of the movie is not really scary, but there are a couple of times that really scare. The main character is very well scripted. Overall a good movie.
- DirectorDavid BrucknerDan BushJacob GentryStarsAnessa RamseyJustin WelbornScott PoythressA horror film told in three parts, from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission that turns people into killers invades every cell phone, radio, and television. This looks like it was made by someone failing film school, at first glance at least. The crappy cinematography actually works for the movie.
- DirectorJim GillespieStarsSylvester StalloneCharles S. DuttonPolly WalkerA lead detective being stalked by a serial killer is asked to check into a clinic treating law enforcement officials who can't face their jobs. Not your typical Sly movie. So far it is the only movie on this list that involves nothing supernatural.
- DirectorColin MinihanStuart OrtizThe Vicious BrothersStarsBenjamin WilkinsonSean RogersonAshleigh GryzkoFor their ghost hunting reality show, a production crew locks themselves inside an abandoned mental hospital that's supposedly haunted - and it might prove to be all too true. This is one of the creepiest movies I have ever scene. It takes time to establish atmosphere rather than simply relying on cheap startle scares. Now don't get me wrong, there are certainly some really good holy *beep* moments in here, but with the atmosphere already firmly established, they are no longer cheap.
