- The festival takes place every other year since 1976. In 1984 it was located in Toronto, in 1986 in Hamilton. Since 2005 the festival is an annual event.
- Since 1997 the spin-off event Ottawa International Student Animation Festival takes place alternating with the festival in odd years.
