- The festival takes place since 1989 and features an international documentary and a "New Asian Currents" competition.
- The Yamagata grand prize is named in honor of Frances H. Flaherty and Robert J. Flaherty, who "cultivated and expanded the horizons of documentary film". The trophy has been designed by sculptor Azuma Kenjiro.
