- Loosely based on the film Billy Liar (1963), young Billy (Steven Guttenberg) is a young man with a wild imagination who can't help telling whoppers, which exasperates his father to no end.
- Billy and his father George go camping with some acquaintances. The father and son proceed to unpleasantly tease Billy who hopes his dad will come to his defense.
- Billy is bored with his humdrum llife and starts fantasizing of a glamorous showbiz existence, associating with people like Merv Griffin.
- Billy and his best friend Arthur are interested in the same girl with dates set up. This leads to a falling out between the pals.
- Billy helps buddy Arthur fill out a computer dating form and convinces him to embellish the facts. But when Art starts going on dates the girls expect a different person.
- Billy applies for a radio station position, foreseeing a future as a media mogul hiring Don Addams. But Billy doesn't get the job and is almost fired from the funeral home until his pal Arthur saves Billy's employment.
- Billy is asked by dad George to hold a ladder while he works on the house. But Billy ends up daydreaming and his father falls, ending up injured in the hospital. Billy tries to make up for his guilt.
