John Hughes has been underrated. During the mid 1980's he had an unequalled talent for defining and celebrating the tastes of a generation of youth, in such a way that the Hughes movies (Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, and especially The Breakfast Club) did for the mid 1980's what Alice's Restaurant and Easy Rider did for the late 1960's, or what Singles did for the early 1990's. This goes in particular for The Breakfast Club.
This movie is filled with some of the most hilarious and memorable dialogue to come out of the 80's teen genre. Some of the catchy lines from this film are still in use today, often by kids who probably have no idea that they originated here. John Bender, the "criminal", in particular, really steals the show.
The Breakfast Club also gets mass coolness points for portraying, in apparent approval, teens smoking marijuana in the school library, and this right in the midst of the 1980's anti-drug hysteria. The way it portrays youth solidarity is also notable: The kids argue with and even seem to hate each other at times, but whenever the dean of students appears they suddenly bend over backwards to cover for each other.
All in all, although underrated when it first came out, this film is a classic and may be destined to be remembered as one of the quintessential films of the 80's. Long after the garbage from the same era like Top Gun has been forgotten, The Breakfast Club will be watched for years to come as a definitive 80's movie.
